Back in 1855 surveyor Frederick Peppercorne selected a township site in a homestead paddock at the confluence of the Richmond and Wilson Rivers.
In 1856 this site was proclaimed the Town of Lismore.
Prior to european arrival the Bundjalung Aboriginal tribe (which comprised 11 major dialectic subdivisions)arrived from far northern Australia somewhere around 6000 BC.
The main indigenous group in the Lismore area was the Wiyabal.
Their territory covered the now Lismore area as well as Alstonville, Dunoon, Nimbin, Cawongla and Larnook.
In February 1954 the local townspeople were visited by Queen Elizabeth II and two years later Lismore was to receive the first transmission of television from Brisbane via a transmitter on Mt Nardi near Nimbin.
