Dandino may have missed a place in the Hardwicke Stakes at the weekend, but trainer Marco Botti believes the horse is tracking better than last year, when he was runner-up in the Caulfield Cup.

Darren Dance, whose Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock races Dandino, said the stable remained bullish after Dandino finished sixth, beaten about 13 lengths, behind Telescope in the Royal Ascot Group 1 on Sunday morning (AEST).

Dance said the expectation had been for a top-four finish, but given it was the seven-year-old’s first start since he finished fifth behind Fiorente in the Melbourne Cup there was always a question mark on his condition.

He said Dandino became “hot” before the race. Without a lead-up run due to unsuitable track conditions the likelihood was that he was going to be in need of a run.

“He had nothing to offer for the last two furlongs (400m) when his condition ran out. He had a good blow for about 45 minutes after the race,” Dance said.

“He travelled well, the jockey (Martin Hartley) said he felt well. It was just that he needed the run.

“We expect him to come along a lot from that. They actually think he’s going a lot better this year than last year at home.

I never liked the horse 1st up and mentioned so, he was 2nd favourite and never going to win.

It is strange how all this comes out after the race, yet punters have burnt pockets.

He sweated up badly, his blood count is 80% and fitness 96% (18/96)

At another year old also he is still is a fair way off it, at least a month.

So punters be cautious of jumping if he starts again in the next 3 weeks.

I would of been nice to hear all about his fitness before the race and punters would not of lost their money.

Cheers Jim
