Not a fan of Labor, but I'd like to see them at least hold on to Balmain and Marrickville. Labor folk are misguided individuals..., but the Greens are bloody dangerous. The watermelons are like the loonie left wing of the Labor party. This is a total debacle. Worst result by either major party for something like a century. All Labor can hold onto are "prime" Sydney suburbs like Bankstown + Auburn....

ABC projections giving the two seats to The Greens.
Marrickville I think, Tebbutt holds, but still too close to call.
Balmain, a three way go - would be unbelievable if the Liberal candidate gets up and wins the seat. Very much a live-inplay seat.

Independent member of Parliament, Clover Moore re-elected as member for Sydney with an increased majority.
The National's have scooped the seats of Tamworth and Port Macquarie in the Federal electorates of Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor with massive swings.
And Nathan Rees, former Premier, looks to be holding off a challenge from Kirsty Lloyd in Toongabbie, should be bolstered by Green preferences.

I made sure that the Green candidate came last on my ballot. Just heard that Labor might hold off the watermelons in both Marrickville + Balmain. It will be interesting to hear what Kristina has to say for herself. It might be something like, "well what did you guys expect? I was given a crap sandwich in the 1st place"....

49% vote for the Liberal Nationals. 11% vote for the Greens. 21% vote for the Labor Party.
Looks like the Shooters/Fishers pick up a seat and I would say Fred Nile will JUST get back in.

Looking forward to hearing the wombleoz explanation on The Greens performance in the two seats that the Greens pretty call themselves as winners weeks prior to the poll - and the Nationals scooping Independent seats in Tamworth and Port Macquarie.
He calls the Coalition "the bad guys" yet it looks like the vast majority of the people of New South Wales clearly disagree with wombleoz.....
But hey, wombleoz is used to being in the minority.

A very impressive concession speech from Kristina Keneally. The Labor Party need to stay away from the looneys (ie wombleoz) who honestly seem to believe NSW Labor is operating "business as usual" and everythings great - rather than actually go through a rigorous process of renewal, rebuilding and some soul-searching.
This is not an election loss or "the inevitable". This is an absolute and utter bloodbath - and a complete trashing of the Labor brand - and rusted on Labor voters have turned there backs on them and largely, voted Liberal.
It's a shame Kristina Keneally has been used and abused in this fashion by the ALP. A talent gone to waste.

As I heard an ALP member of the upper house say tonight; its not so much this loss that will terminally hurt the Labor Party, it is how they respond that will determine the party's future.

Its disturbing that someone can call the people of a state stupid when they vote out a government that is corrupt, rotting, out of touch, not listening, bereft of ideas and dragging a state down.
Even Labor MP's admit they're not worthy of government and need a great deal of rebuilding, soul-searching and rejuvenation.

Plenty of work to be done, lots to repair, lots to build.
But if anyone can deliver - it's Barry O'Farrell.
I'm confident NSW will give Barry a fair chance to deliver, after 16 years of Labor governance.

I'm a big believer in strong Opposition's and whats happened tonight is not good for Labor, to perform as an effective Opposition.
But the Coalition understand this mammoth responsibility given to them tonight by the people of NSW.
What a great point made by the Labor Upper house member, Luke Foley, on the ABC election panel tonight. He was saying that as a citizen, he of course, wants this government (under O'Farrell) to succeed.
He wants the NSW Labor party not to sit back and pray for this government to fail, but to look within itself - rebuild and rejuvenate - and reform and present a credible alternative government.

There have been plenty of bad Liberal and Labor governments - no government is perfect, every government makes mistakes - we're all human - thats the bottom line.
But on the flipside there have been plenty of governments of both persuasions deliver really good governance.
I'm confident the Coalition team in NSW will deliver - but government is not easy.
I'd expect the Labor comrades out and mocking, bagging and condemning Barry O'Farrell come tomorrow morning.

Said he was away for a wedding this weekend, conveniently enough.
Probably best he missed this blood bath. Labor will need people that are willing to accept the realities of the loss - not delusional "theres no problem" yes-men.
Thats it for me.
Time for a few glasses of celebratory champagne.
I hope this thread hasn't been too boring for you DA. It's not "The World of Doubleagent" thread, but hey
We've seen an amazing and historic election result tonight.
Real change has swept across NSW. Massive swings - the biggest swings that we've EVER seen in this nation's history - has seen Labor fall tonight after 16 years.
I say - onwards and upwards from here on in.
Goodnight.

Carmel Tebbutt for Labor, looks to be holding and will likely retain her seat in Marrickville.
Nathan Rees, also for Labor, looks like he will likely retain his seat in what was a photo finish in Toongabbie.
John Barilaro, for the Nationals, collects the seat of Monaro at the expense of Emergency Services Minister, Steve Whan.
Balmain is too close to call, with the Liberal candidate leading on first preferences. The distribution of preferences will be messy and complicated. I'd suggest Labor's Verity Firth may just hold on to this seat - but its lineball, Labor v Liberal.

It has to be said, this was a deeply disappointing campaign for The Greens despite the hype. They are likely to hold 2 Upper House seats - very unlikely to pick up a third.
Across the electorate, the biggest swings away from Labor to the Coalition were in the below seats:
•Bathurst - 37 per cent •Riverstone - 31 per cent •Menai - 27 per cent •Charlestown - 26 per cent •Parramatta - 25 per cent
Absolutely unbelievable numbers.

i think the most significant point from a Federal point of view is the swing in a couple of seats from Independants to Nationals. Almost certain that Nationals will win a couple of seats next election currently held by Independants

I must say I am flabbergasted at the result. I thought Labor may have lost 1 or 2 seats but to lose this way is absolutely heart breaking. However we must press on. I congratulate the Liberal party on their victory, but must warn them they must deliver, or it will be a very short stay in power. I feel this Labor party has what it takes to be the best damn opposition of all time. I look forward to the next election.

just got home, well a little while back - how did the election go??? [;)]
congrats Jez and other Liberal supporters, NSW needed the change - it's probably bad that the loss is so big because as Jez said you need a strong opposition to have good government - which is part of the reason NSW got as bad as it did
sad to see so many independents lose - but great to see Torbay hold on easily in my old home seat of Northern Tablelands - the sensible part of Tony Windsor's New England
as to the Greens, the counting is still happening - Balmain could go any which way with the Liberal leading at present and the Greens running 3rd by 100 votes or so - if we can get to second we'll win it on Labor preferences, if we stay 3rd Verity will be returned. Disappointed about Marrickville but read today the candidate supported bans on goods imported from Israel - stupid woman!!! In the upper house we look a good chance of having 5 seats - although Pauline is still in with a show to get the last one - overall, we need to work out how to build on the solid 10% of the vote we have locked in
anyways, that was a loss that was a long time coming and on the bright side Julia no longer has to worry about a protest vote on state issues
just got home, well a little while back - how did the election go??? congrats Jez and other Liberal supporters, NSW needed the change - it's probably bad that the loss is so big because as Jez said you need a strong opposition to have good government
Mr Torbay suffered a massive swing wombleoz, not a great night for him. He survived, but suffered a huge backlash - nice spin, all the same though
Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor are on notice. Huge swings to the National's in the seats of these two Federal independents. The people of their electorates are angry - there is white hot anger out there. Goodluck to them, I hope they enjoy the remainder of their final term in the parliament
Labor need to learn wombleoz, I believe a strong Opposition makes a good government, but NSW Labor deserved what it got. Corrupt, factional-nonsense, a leadership circus and puppetry. This is the biggest whacking of a government in Australian history - this sort of wholloping has never occured before - but NSW Labor was that bad, was that rotten, was that incompetent it has been labelled by the people of NSW, one of the worst governments in Australian history.
And now the man who started wrecking the party, Union Heavyweight, John Robertson, is going to take the leadership of the party on Thursday
As Labor Upper house member, Luke Foley, wisely stated on election night - it is not so much the smashing of Labor electorally that will be terminal on the partys future - it is how it REACTS to this horrific defeat.
I am cheering on Pauline Hanson to win an Upper House seat. I'd prefer Pauline, than a radical NSW Green from the same pod as Lee Rhiannon. A everyday Australian's voice in the Upper House may well be a breath of fresh air for the NSW Parliament.
As for this 10% solid base you talk about wombleoz. Can I say your starting to sound very desperate and forgive me, but its the same sort of desperate tune that was wailed by Democrat supporters in years gone by............sounds promising to me.

The Greens will continue to capture the stray votes, here and there - but they cannot (and haven't) connected with middle Australia - the ideology is toxic to the majority of Australian's.
Bottom line, the Greens are extreme fringe danglers, who can't and won't show enough pragmatism to connect with the Centre (due to ideology) and they are and will continue to be IRRELEVENT.
.....and thankfully, in a minority.

If you don't live in NSW, I don't think it effects you, does it bigted...ffs?
And secondly, this is a democracy with elections - if you think you can do better, or you represent the majority's views - put yourself up as a candidate at the next election, its YOUR RIGHT, just as it is, Pauline Hanson's right.
Of course, you and the minority would prefer a Green Member representing the views of the NSW Greens, led by communist Lee Rhiannon and the other comrades.......wouldn't you?

Maybe its a strange choice for you AFL, but then I find it strange that anybody would want a lunatic left fringe party like the greens to get another upper house seat. Each to their own I guess.

Actually I find that Pauline Hanson (One Nation) + the Greens have quite a lot in common. One Nation was a right wing breakaway movement because at the time they didn't think that John Howard + the coalition were far enough to the right. Johnnie convinced them over time (and with some persuasion, like not exchanging preferences) that they would be better off with the mainstream parties (Liberal + National). On the opposite side of the ledger, we have the Greens who get most of their votes from dissatisfied left wing leaning former Labor voters, who feel that Labor is not left-wing enough. The question is if Labor will ever get those voters back, like the Coalition did with One Nation voters.

Labour in NSW got smashed because they deserved to get smashed. Any Labour supporter that doesn't believe that, is blinkered biased in the extreme. They will be out of Government for at least 8 years and unless they rebuild from the bottom up,and present to the voters a viable alternative, they will be out of Government for the same time that they were in Government.
Shelley would be ideal as a politician. Couldn't lie straight in bed.

The Best Bets for the election have both landed, albeit at about $1.50 each, with the Greens picking up a lower house seat it means Labor stand on 20 seats, just under the 20.5 line.
The next election thread will likely be for the Queensland election. Can't wait
