Before clay season starts for real, we start with the fake clay in Charleston. It doesn't have the top stars, but a pretty good field. Monterrey has Garbine. No men's tennis during the week, but DC QF's over the weekend.
These threads are weekly threads with just tennis talk: match talk, past, current or upcoming events in tennis etc. Spamming (including muggy politics talk) and general sports talk can be done elsewhere such as the usual megathreads, current one is called It's time for S/OT 6.

ALSO, activity in these threads have dropped drastically in recent weeks (last week of Miami had less than 100 posts). I don't mind starting these, it's not that much work, but if this trend continues I might not continue with these for much longer. The point of these threads is to keep apart the tennis talk from other talk, so that people not interested in non-tennis talk still can follow tennis discussions on here. However, lately those posters haven't been here much and this forum is still not attracting new posters and for most part it's the same posters that post in both the tennis and the spam threads, which probably leads to more and more tennis talk taking place in the spam thread which was how things were during the megathreads era. Anyway, if you want the tennis talk threads to continue let me know so I know if there's any point to keep posting these, and also if you want them to remain it would help if tennis discussion was kept here and not in spam threads.

Surely Osaka is a train job, remember watching Brady v Kaplis at the US Open last year, it was one of the most abject performances I've ever seen, was really like a training session plis. Yet, I remember watching every second against kiki at the French and should looked like a coming force for long spells, and clay is not her surface.

who were your picks, mine were Kvitova-Kasatkina-Konta-Gavrilova. Top player had Stephens, now has Goerges.

Kvitova, Keys, Garcia, Kasatkina.

Gave up on Keys, picked her twice and she bombed at the first and second hurdle even with a bye. Think she'll lose to Slinky or Giorgi in the third round again.

These events are now to small for Stephens to bother with.

She was one of my next slam winners, but the way she folded like a cheap tent in the US Final was damning, hard to see her getting back there and winning.
Report wisewords April 2, 2018 8:50 PM BST
Mattek-Sands really should have gone to Monterrey. Charleston is not a surface for someone returning from a horrific knee injury. You need fantastic movement on this surface, and she's not going to have that right now.

Sloane did beat her up pretty badly. I like Madison so I did feel a bit sorry for her that day. But in general she's won quite a few smaller tournaments so it's not like she's had nothing so far in her career.

Report n88uk April 2, 2018 9:19 PM BST
I strongly suspected Sloane would withdraw is why I didn't pick her, as I don't trust the alt system given it doesn't let me register the right 1st alt often. I actually had Stephens on my alts for some reason.

Charleston gave her a WC whereas Monterrey probably wouldn't.

Report n88uk April 3, 2018 9:03 PM BST
Yes. She said in press after Bogota she will play ITF's in Europe, those tend to be killer events though, doubt she will win much there.

Bit of a twist of the knife being put out by a player that according on Genie's zero tolerance views on doping shouldn't even be on the tour, but Bouchard's issues are all about confidence. I'd like to see her hook up with someone like Ángel Giménez who would be able to get her head back up and a bit of hope in her heart, ease the panic and chart direction.

She's far too young to be talking so down but she needs the right gentle guidance to re-find that 'childlike faith' in herself. At the moment she's flailing with no rudder.
Report mesmerised April 5, 2018 7:17 PM BST
It's a shame Bouchard didn't try and get Sascha Bajin at the end of last season when Osaka did, much more than just a hitting partner and seems to improve every player he's worked with including Woz who won her biggest career title at the time in Singapore.
