The Happy Slam is here. While some names are back compared to the US Open, we still have several big names missing. You can find the draws here https://ausopen.com/draws?events=2446&player= (women) and here https://ausopen.com/draws (men). It has been raining in Melbourne during qualies and forecasts says we will have some more rain during the upcoming week.
These threads are weekly threads with just tennis talk: match talk, past, current or upcoming events in tennis etc. Spamming (including muggy politics talk) and general sports talk can be done elsewhere such as the usual megathreads, current one is called It's time for S/OT 6.

Andujar a clay master? must have missed somethingGrin Andujar was a clayer no doubt but don't remember winning many tournaments at tour level, also don't think he was ever made top 25 so not really a good guide.

But Nadal was saying the same thing during PCB's US Open run, that he was not as mentally strong as the other Spanish players.

Rain !
Report n88uk January 21, 2018 2:54 AM GMT
Top half is stronger than bottom half really. I feel like both Svitolina and Woz have been fortunate with who they have drawn given what they have shown so far, neither have looked that good, but both have had very good draws, and will continue to until meeting each other most likely.

I guess, he hasn't been seen for a while.
A Clay Master was perhaps a bit flattering assessment of his abilities, but he won the Casablanca tournament two years in a row before that unfortunate PCB event.

Ryba is a very good matchup for woz.
Report morrillo January 21, 2018 3:09 AM GMT
Woz is well used to defending pacey rallies and Ryba doesn't play with pace. This will be a bit hard for her to adjust to
Report Angela Rebecchi January 21, 2018 3:10 AM GMT
Magdalena Rybarikova
Report n88uk January 21, 2018 3:10 AM GMT
In theory she is yes, in practice Woz should have lost to Fett, looked very average vs Bertens who was utter crap.
Report mesmerised January 21, 2018 3:10 AM GMT
Ryba won a point from a drop shot from the baseline
Report morrillo January 21, 2018 3:11 AM GMT
Wozzy is great on the run. The thing is that Ryba's matches lack so much pace Wozzy's timing will be a bit off. she'll have to generate the power instead of redirecting it
Report n88uk January 21, 2018 3:13 AM GMT
The real issue I would generally say pre-match (I mean Rybarikova has started great now after this) is it's hard to see how Rybarikova finds enough winning plays to consistently punch holes through Woz, doesn't have amazing power to blast her off the court, will struggle to hit backhand winners etc., and she's not particularly good defensively herself.
Report n88uk January 21, 2018 3:15 AM GMT
And this isn't a grass court either where slice is that relevant and you can just pile to the net loads behind average approach shots which Rybarikova tends to do.
Report morrillo January 21, 2018 3:15 AM GMT
Wozzy will Grind her down eventually but she'll struggle until Ryba runs out of steam
Report morrillo January 21, 2018 3:18 AM GMT
