and Olympics 1988 against Sweden. I asked former Roma player and Swedish national player Jonas Thern once if the Swedes discussed tanking the game and he said yes, there was a discussion within the team but tanking was never an option. So Sweden won, got owned by Italy in next round and Germugs easily beat a mug team like Zambia Cry

Edy why are you denying Germany being smart.

This is the thing, people are muggy on things like this. It's just smart play, nothing wrong with it. When club teams play their reserves, no-one blinks an eye lid. Relegation battlers in the past have done things like play full reserves at Old Trafford in a mid-week game to rest players for weekend.

Take Halep example, her getting Serena out of that competition would have increased her chances massively.

Report n88uk June 24, 2018 3:14 PM BST
That could easily happen SiG, but I think group below is much the same whoever you play. I actually think Colombia are best team in that group and don't look like winning group atm but will know more after today. Colombia looked good game 1 given they played 87 mins with 10 men.
Report n88uk June 24, 2018 3:15 PM BST
I think here people would be tied on it Caramba, I don't think it would get criticised at the time. I would expect a lot of after timing whatever we do. So if we win group and lose to Brazil, why did we do it, if we lose group and out last 16, lost momentum, stupidity from Southgate. Etc. Can't win basically.

Anyway that Southgate interview came just as I was writing on Euro 96.

Euro 96 is a bit of a myth on England imo. Shearer is referring to the game vs Holland where we won 4-1 to win the group, but this gave us an easier draw next round, I guess you could say it put us in Germany's side of draw, but this fuels a myth about England being great at Euro 96, we weren't really, but people remember this game and not the others.

Imo it's just logical. If you have choices you take the easier route. It's not so much about being scared of playing x or y, it's about only having to beat 1-2 of these teams to beat 2-3 of them, and this makes a difference when margins are small at tournament football.

And Southgate didn't say that in context, I don't really know what he will do yet, but to quote him you want your fate in your own hands. Er not really. Though I doubt there isn't a little bit of fear of Germany somewhere given what happened last world cup despite it being a very different team, given how much that affected Brazil as a margin.

Btw it's very hard for Brazil to control their fate like this anyway. If they lose their out, so can't possibly do anything even if they wished (which they won't anyway, given pressure will be on Brazil given they have looked average so far, so need a performance). Hopefully Serbia beat them of course is best for England.
