Would have faced Brazil in SF instead of QF if you had won the group. but sure, that year was a good opportunity since lots of the usual top nations were mugging in that tournament or just not that strong at the time.

Argentina who we beat and still didn't win the group!

This is the only real world cup in my time where we stood toe to toe with the best teams and didn't look flat out outclassed.

2006 was ok too, but because of what you said the teams we would have had to beat that year were much stronger (of course we lost a penalty shootout that year).

Just looking at this. A lot of them seem meaningless though given there was only 4 teams at a lot of them.

France have never made the semi's seems an amazing stat. They came 4th once in 1969 when there only 4 teams to begin with.

Report n88uk July 19, 2017 9:55 PM BST
Seems kinda muggery it took them so long to expand to 16 teams tbh.
Report n88uk July 19, 2017 9:56 PM BST
Oh that 4th was an unofficial European championship according to wiki anyway, so France have never made the semi's at an official tournament.
Report caramba July 19, 2017 9:56 PM BST
doesn't make them meaningless. and they've still won the last 5 which have all had 8-12 teams in them.

Report caramba July 19, 2017 10:01 PM BST
you wanna expand it, but if you end up with 10-1 results by doing so (which happens/happened?) in World Cup, that kills the credibility a bit.
Report n88uk July 19, 2017 10:02 PM BST
I suppose more countries have ploughed more money into their women's team in recent history, and this has probably only have been happening like last 5-10 years in many places.
Report caramba July 19, 2017 10:12 PM BST
It's incredible how much the game has change since the first WC in 1991.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1991_FIFA_Women%27s_World_Cup
USA and Germany are still giants, but Norway has declined. China has also declined since. Brazil lost 0-5 in a match there, but have been championship contenders recently. France and England weren't even there and now they are 2nd and 3rd in Europe. And landscape will probably keep changing in the next 10-20 years, whereas with the men the top nations have more or less been the same in the past 25 years and will likely continue to be that way.
Report n88uk July 19, 2017 10:15 PM BST
When you say someone like Norway has declined. Have they really, or have they just been left behind, as I assume they were one of the first to invest, and now other, bigger countries do that, that's why they get left behind.
Report caramba July 19, 2017 10:16 PM BST
Japan another nation that's made great progress, only made 2nd round once in the first five editions, have one Gold and one Silver since.
Report caramba July 19, 2017 10:17 PM BST
a little of both probably.
Report n88uk July 19, 2017 10:17 PM BST
Like no big nation anymore can really get away with just not bothering with women's football, whereas the reality was that is what would happen in England in like the early 90s.

I'm pretty sure we put more money in than Germany now I think I read before the last World Cup but can't find it to hand at this second.
Report caramba July 19, 2017 10:18 PM BST
they're still not bad (they made final of last Euros), but they're not a tippity top nation like they once were.
Report n88uk July 19, 2017 10:19 PM BST
You probably haven't seen, but very recently Man Utd have come under pressure to start a women's team. As now Real Madrid are about to start one, Man Utd are the only global brand club who won't have a women's team. No real response has been given yet other than "it's under review".
Report caramba July 19, 2017 10:20 PM BST
Didn't know that, but I know about other top clubs in England having proper women's teams these days.
Report n88uk July 19, 2017 10:22 PM BST
But this sort of thing is bound to help women's game in England too, when the big clubs who are let's face it absolute awash with cash throw money at the women's game. As you can throw amounts that are virtually nothing to big teams it will pay big dividends, and likely help develop a lot of players.

Same I imagine is in the process of happening in Spain, so I would expect Spain to be the next big rapid improvers if they aren't already in that process already. But now you have Real Madrid in the game, and Barcelona increasing their budget.
Report caramba July 19, 2017 10:23 PM BST
English women's soccer will continue to prosper I'm sure. Will be interesting to see what happens in Spain, if the money alone will help or if lack of tradition and attitude towards women's sport will hold things back.
Report n88uk July 19, 2017 10:25 PM BST
I read an article a while back that was written by Christopher Clarey actually, I think during the tennis in Madrid about Spanish women's football in the process is of an overhaul and it was convincing in its points that Spain are likely to rapidly rise in coming years, obviously it's not instant. But once the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona are throwing serious money at youth women's football, you're likely to get rapid improvement. Probably takes like 10 years to get see the real end product though.
Report n88uk July 19, 2017 10:28 PM BST
I don't really get the whole attitude towards women's sport thing. Spain is a bit weird in this sense. The crowds are a disgrace in Madrid really, but press coverage wise they will give their players big coverage, much better coverage than UK players would ever get here.

I also noticed that like Muguruza will get a lot more response/support from top Spanish sports stars again than would ever happen here.

In UK the crowds are decent, which gives an impression of respect, yet there is constant disrespect for women's tennis and women's sport in general here. The media towards women's tennis in this country really is non-existent
Report n88uk July 19, 2017 10:30 PM BST
Like our top journalists working for the top newspapers are still not even really watching women's matches at say Wimbledon. They are watching Konta's matches obviously because that's going to be covered in the papers, but they won't even watch say Kerber vs Muguruza or insert any real match of no British interest.

In general our top tennis journalists attitude towards the women's game is very disappointing, and a lot of them need replacing because of it.
Report n88uk July 19, 2017 10:34 PM BST
Then again those exact same journalists are the ones who have generally been criticising ATP's depth post-Wimbledon (Federer's comments if you've seen them did play into this, as he questioned youngsters saying he doesn't see them serve and volleying, and reluctant to bring something different to the table), saying ATP has been putting lots into the NxtGen but on results you have to question it and so on.

Something that has been blindingly obvious for years if you let yourself not get blinded by the big 4 for a second.

Waitrose shoppers have until April 3 to get their free coffee with no strings attached.
From then on, customers will have to prove they bought something before getting their complimentary cappuccino or latte.

The change to the popular policy was trialled at several stores last year, but is only now being rolled out across the UK.
Currently, myWaitrose loyalty card holders can collect their drink as they go inside and carry it around while they shop.
But from next month they will get it as they leave, after paying for shopping.
There is no minimum spend, however certain purchases are not included:
Petrol
Single use carrier bags
Tobacco
Stamps
Mobile phone top-ups
Lottery tickets
Gift vouchers
Cashback
Parking charges
Formula milk for babies
By law, shops are not allowed to give an incentive for buying formula milk.
Waitrose said the change was ‘just a refinement’ to the offer and stressed they were committed to offering free coffee as a ‘thank you’ to customers.
The store brushed off the suggestion that it was in response to a middle-class backlash from customers upset that the stores were being invaded by less well-off shoppers.
