After flopping hard at Eurovision, Italy gets another chance to shine this week as the tennis circus moves on to Rome. This is the final chance for some struggling players to find form for Roland Garros and the last chance for Maria Sharapova to qualify for main draw at Wimbledon without needing a WC. No roof in Rome, but I've looked at forecasts and it says we won't be seeing much of this:

It getting to the point that if Broady takes RG seriously this year instead of focusing on Wimbledon, she'll have a good shout.

Market likes to have a favourite to back in and has decided it's Halep. That's where the money goes. I wouldn't touch any of these favs. Halep could work out a good lay in early rounds if she's like 1.0x vs players.

Report caramba May 21, 2017 2:24 PM BST
only muggy events left now so odds will pretty much stay like this.
Report caramba May 21, 2017 2:28 PM BST
harsh to be too critical of Simona since she suffered an injury, but it wasn't just physical today, she mentally went away too. Whether you think it was physical or mental, she shouldn't be this low for RG.
Report n88uk May 21, 2017 2:29 PM BST
Mentally she always goes away.

Na, market is so volatile that the winners next week will get backed in imo, even though I think next weeks events are meaningless. Especially if these winners are bandwagon players.

Svito pretty good with the voodoo dolls btw. Garbine yesterday, Simona today.
Report n88uk May 21, 2017 2:34 PM BST
Everyone is a new player always after a few wins. Bouchard is a new player after winning 3-4 matches last week etc.

As you know I'm tougher to convince.
Report n88uk May 21, 2017 2:34 PM BST
Also Halep won't be able to call Cahill for help at French Open like she could when she was mugging the first set today.
Report n88uk May 21, 2017 2:35 PM BST
She's the sorta player that can rely on Cahill sometimes to stop a total collapse, an option that doesn't exist at grand slams.
Report n88uk May 21, 2017 2:42 PM BST
Race top 8 on Monday:

#1 Svitolina 2845
#2 Pliskova 2507
#3 Konta 2245
#4 Wozniacki 2240
#5 Halep 2190
#6 V. Williams 2127
#7 Mladenovic 2122
#8 S. Williams 2030 (Kuznetsova 1815)

How many make Singapore. These are actually developing quite a gap now. #10 is on 1542 Pavlyuchenkova.
Report caramba May 21, 2017 2:46 PM BST
at the same time, if any of the big guns get going, that's not much.
Report caramba May 21, 2017 2:48 PM BST
as we saw with Halep in recent weeks.
Report n88uk May 21, 2017 2:48 PM BST
Yer it isn't. But most the players outside, bar someone like Muguruza it's hard to see get going atm.

Radwanska for example is on like 600 points. She's going to need some serious runs to catch that up.

Of course someone probably win one of the slams at least from outside those names and that's 2000 points alone.
Report n88uk May 21, 2017 2:50 PM BST
Most of those should make it really though. The top 5 will have to play very poorly to not make it from here. Venus doesn't play much so maybe, but she still looks reasonably good so should make it. Kiki depends if you think rails will come off, in this form she will make it. Kuznetsova of course most at risk, in theory the best part of her season has basically gone.
Report n88uk May 21, 2017 2:51 PM BST
I doubt Kuznetsova makes it, someone will overtake her, hard to say definitively who though.
Report caramba May 21, 2017 2:54 PM BST
wouldn't count out Kerber just yet.
Report n88uk May 21, 2017 2:54 PM BST
Svitolina has a legit chance at #1 anyway. I mean Kerber is likely to lose it after Wimbledon. Pliskova is theoretically in pole position, but we don't know who is going to win RG and add a boatload of points (unless it's Muguruza). Halep has chances for example if she does win RG to be #1 very shortly after.
Report n88uk May 21, 2017 2:55 PM BST
Yer I don't rule her out. She's #13 and she has been terrible.

That kind of evidence for my theory I bang on about the advantage of being a top seed. Because no way has Kerber been the 13th best player of the season, she's literally hardly beat anybody of note all season, but being a high seed, she gets soft draw after soft draw.
Report n88uk May 21, 2017 2:56 PM BST
She also plays a lot of events which does help to.
