this lays out why as a labour supporter the customs union is no good for the uk.but labour have said they will support this because of 1 reason.....ireland...but by accepting that is opening another problem we cannot make deals ...this does not respect the result and ties our as is said only helps big does not aid labours CORE VOTE.
Report Dr Crippen June 15, 2018 4:20 PM BST
From tony's link:

''It is the other key feature of a customs union where the problems begin: all countries have to charge a common external tariff external on goods coming in from other countries.

As a result, the UK would be unable to negotiate independent trade deals with fast-growing economies around the world such as the US, Australia and China. But it’s not just about formal trade deals: we would also have no ability to decide what tariffs we charge on imports from non-EU countries. At the moment we are forced to charge high tariffs on food, clothing and footwear imports from non-EU countries, mainly to protect industries in continental Europe.
EU tariffs on imported goods hit the poorest families the hardest by increasing prices of essential goods. They make it harder for poorer countries to export their goods. They do, however, protect the profits of big corporations (no wonder big multinationals like the protectionist customs union so much). This protectionism also reduces incentive to invest contributing to low productivity and long-run wage stagnation.''

From the same source, an interesting article about those who wish to remain.

Always live the idea of brexiteers demanding the other half of the country is patriotic and unites with the winning side. And in the next breath they call remainers revolting.

Is it any wonder you get told just where to shove your unity.
Report Foinavon June 15, 2018 11:26 PM BST
There's little doubt that some remainers are unpleasant, not necessarily because they are remainers.
Report Pleasegivemeanailedontip June 16, 2018 1:04 AM BST
Revolt - to break away from or rise against constituted authority. Seems fair, almost complimentary to some

Not sure i would classify remainers as the article does - the only categorisation i think that matters are the remainers who can truly accept the changing majority view and look for the opportunities  - and remainers who are prepared to fight for the minority whatever the cost

Wouldn't that be better than cutting off your nose to spite your face?
Which is the way of the socialist.
Report Dr Crippen June 16, 2018 11:40 AM BST
All remainers are achieving is to encourage the EU to offer us a deal which is best for them regardless of the UK's demands.

Why would they want to do that when they too will be subject to the same deal?

LAB voter split in latest YouGov Brexit tracker

Right to leave 21%
Wrong to leave 72%
Don't Know 7%
Report tony57 July 3, 2018 12:14 PM BST
38% of labours core vote voted for brexit....polls change..its the vote that counts..but the PLP is 90% for the eu..labour members are 75% for the eu..labours WC voters? 70% of labour constituances..voted to carnt change the result just because more in the party want to stay in the eu?..its called democracy...
Report PorcupineorPineapple July 3, 2018 12:23 PM BST
tony - democracy means that people can change their minds.

The thing about labour constituencies is a red herring. Those Leave voters also included tories, UKIPpers and anyone angry at mainstream politics who's given up on voting for mainstream parties. So don't try to portray Labour voters in Burnley as supporting Brexit as the facts don't actually bear that out.

Anyhoo, just pointing out the latest opinion. I doubt by this stage Jez gives two hoots about representing the wishes of Labour voters, it's all about a car crash and getting another election fairly soon so they can grab power (though being five points behind the worst government is human history is some kind of spectacular under-performance).
Report tony57 July 3, 2018 4:29 PM BST
not in a referendum?

Latest poll shows Labour five points behind Tories. This is mid-term and after eight years of Tory austerity. Why isn't Labour surging ahead? I'll tell you why. It's because it aims its policies at middle-class Londoners, not ordinary working-class voters.Paul Embery added,

excatly...and if and when get your wish, remember when we lose all we hold dear after another 20yrs of tory goverments..but you,ll look back and say were europeans..and we get OUR OWN money back sometimes...oh and i dont need a visa...but 10 people to a house ,and the nhs on its knees and no school places is worth us not controlling our own sorry PP..IF IT COMES TO IT..I,LL FIGHT  TO SAVE MY COUNTRY AND DEMOCRACY....

PP with respect..i know more about WC peoples feeling than you..I WARNED the party they would lose the referendum..i was told i was a red kipper..and there was no chance we would lose...i also speak to many people who vote labour daily..all round the talking about WC labour..not middle class...and im telling you now..forget labour getting a majority without EX UKIP voters returning like they did i helped 3k more vote for my mp cos labour promised to respect result..

and for the last one has changed their minds PP....your living in a fantasy land..what i see is a hardening of the leave vote..

So no. F*ck pandering to idiots and racists frankly.

That's put the Labour party straight into the bin.

So we can't vote for UKIP or Labour because they're racist, which only leaves us with the ''THE WORST GOVERNMENT IN LIVING MEMORY'' and the disgusting Liberals to vote for.

So let's hear it for the Tories!
Report Dr Crippen July 4, 2018 11:21 AM BST
Actually I prefer the none maliciously racist UKIP party in preference to the maliciously racist Labour party.

UKIP merely want to limit the numbers of people coming here, while Labour seek to persecute those already here.

There's not a bad difference.

I'm not it's a great slogan for them to use at the next election but at least it'll be honest.

FIRST OF many campaigns have you fought? how many doors have you knocked on? talk about why the WC PEOPLE WONT VOTE LABOUR? atitudes like yours are the think you know what WC PEOPLE ARE THINKING?..i fear not?
as for i will fight for my country...damn right i will, we are told democracy is what we stand for..and i will fight for any means i can,,violence? not what i meant, but every other way..yes.

and as for no more labour majoritys without returning ex labour voters who went to ukip..thats a fact i can assure you..but i see you think thats ok? how dare you call ukip voters racist i know hundreds who are decent hardworking people...put it this way..i prefare there company to so called middle class leftwing lovers of the eu..anyday.
Report tony57 July 6, 2018 4:12 PM BST
these ukip voters were once SOLID labour..and left because they see their country changing before the eyes and dont like it..they see globelisation giving them nothing and labour not doing enough..i think i know if im labour or not? the other thing is im a democrat you sadly are not, and you are not labour, anyone who is happy to have tory goverments to stay in the eu you are happy to, and everyone who voted to leave or ukip is racist cos we want controlled immigration..ive stood for what i belive all the years blair changed the party to what you like..(lib dems)

may i remind you of ed millibands labour party....

so those who dont care about our country having too many people in those who dont care about stopping uncontrolled immgration...
