‘I did not use any lead’ – Raul da Silva
Jockey issues statement after fracas with Jim Crowley at Goodwood
Share this
Tuesday 12 June 2018News
Jockey Raul da Silva has denied using a piece of lead with which to strike Jim Crowley in the face at Goodwood on Sunday.

Crowley has claimed he was “the victim of an unprovoked attack from behind” in a changing-room altercation that led to Da Silva receiving a 21-day suspension for violent conduct.

The 2016 champion Flat jockey alleged that he was struck from behind “with what felt like a piece of lead” after a “number of jockeys” questioned Da Silva’s riding technique after the first race of the day.

Da Silva admitted to hitting Crowley, but claimed he did not instigate what happened at Goodwood between the two jockeys.

He told Press Association Sport: “I did not use any lead. I had nothing in my hand.

“If I had, he wouldn’t have carried on riding because lead is heavy. If I had something in my hand he would have lost some teeth.

“If I’d hit him with lead, why not get the police involved? Everyone took his side and I was there with nobody.

“I will swear on my son’s life that Jim started the fight.

“I like to be friends with everybody, I don’t want to start trouble. It’s difficult for me now. I’m not allowed to go racing for a long time, it’s not fair.”

Crowley, who required medical treatment in hospital for facial injuries, said that allegations from Da Silva that he instigated the altercation at Goodwood were “categorically untrue”.

He said in a statement on Monday: “There was a minor disagreement over a race-riding incident with a number of jockeys not happy with Raul’s riding.

“After this, I was the victim of an unprovoked attack from behind with what felt like a piece of lead, and it is disappointing that I have then been accused of being the aggressor.

“This is categorically untrue and it is notable that after a lengthy inquiry that heard from many witnesses, only one of us was suspended.”

Da Silva and Crowley rode in the opening seven-furlong handicap at Goodwood, in which the former finished last aboard Medieval. Crowley came home fifth of the nine runners on Charles Molson.

Twenty-one days is the British Horseracing Authority’s maximum recommended suspension for violent conduct, but racing’s rulers said on Monday that it has “the ability to reopen such cases, if it is felt necessary”.

What's the game coming to ...?

Firstly, we have had the sickening after racing punch-ups at Goodwood & Ascot that got National News coverage, saying it was fueled by drink and drugs.

Now we have the jockeys having a punch-up at Goodwood, with allegations of pieces of lead being used.

This follows on from a set-to between trainers Johnny Farrelly and Alan Jones, after a stand-up row in the weighing room earlier this year, with both being called before the stewards to explain.

I still remember the well-documented altercation between trainers David Elsworth & Bill Turner a few years ago that led to blows being exchanged, the acrimony still exists between the two.

There was also a post-race scuffle between owners and trainers a couple of years ago (I think at Lingfield) involving Aussie trainer Brett Johnson in the winner's enclosure.

All we need now is a mass brawl between the bookies at Royal Ascot over pitch allocations ...

Anyone else have any stories of violence at the races? ... makes interesting reading, seeing who is up for a fight, or just "handbags".

Keep seeing the clips of Barney Curley, Luke Harvey (the under achiever) & John McCririck having a row at Folkestone (?) races, although that never came to blows, just insults.

It brings racing into disrepute, gives out damaging publicity just when they are trying to attract families and a bigger audience to attend race meetings.

Royal Ascot riot on the cards?

Morning GC - yeah I used to go a fair bit about 15-20 years ago. One afternoon must have been about 60 of them doing the same in one of the bars. A few English then took a bit of offence (alcohol fuelled), and one of the Welsh blokes ripped his shirt off and picked up a chair above his head and got nicked straight away. Nothing really happened at all but it frightened a few of the racegoers who left promptly, and at one point it did look like it could turn into a mass brawl, you really only needed one to start and it would have went up.
Report GEORGE.B June 13, 2018 10:23 AM BST
That statement from Crowley (or was it written by someone who works for Shadwell?) was clearly carefully worded, crafted to exonerate Crowley of any blame whilst at the same time not only blaming RDS, but also one may argue designed to destroy his reputation and damage his riding career by suggesting he had attacked Crowley with a heavy object and also from behind, imo.

Why suggest he had lead in his hand when Crowley is unable to be sure about this as he claimed: 'what felt like....'.

It's not hard imo to have sympathy with RDS in this situation

"...Everyone took his side and I was there with nobody."

" I will swear on my son’s life that Jim started the fight."

Anyone remember the big Irish guy (middle aged) who was a regular on the train from Paddington to Newbury.

Very loud and vociferous, at the end of the day he would have his shirt off (tied around his waist) and be well oiled ... always got home and was out next day at somewhere like Lingfield or Sandown.

Also there were characters who you would see at every Southern meeting, they looked well down at heel with tatty raincoats and shoes with newspaper in to soak up water coming through the holes in the soles. How they afforded it was a mystery.

We named one old boy "Tote Ticket Billy" ... he would scour the floor of the stands looking for winning tickets that had been discarded by the newbie punters and women who hadn't a clue. One day at Epsom he struck lucky after a horse was disqualified and he found more than one winning ticket, the gatemen all knew him and some regulars would buy him a cup of tea ... but in reality, he was probably very wealthy.

Also, the regular workmen fellah's that set up the joints, supplied the tissue, crib cards and chalk ... it was only 6 days a week then.
