"Aimed at racing and betting enthusiasts, The Racing Paper will be published every Saturday throughout Great Britain, and will be priced at £1.90."

Couldn't get a copy down the local shop, asked the missus to get one if she sees it when she is out shopping.

There was one in my local bookies - in the toilet.

Got one today, will be the last time that I buy it. They had a golden opportunity today to nab ex racing post readers, but got to say it's not much better than the racing coverage in your normal daily paper.

Great paper full of the stuff you need, not the bullshit tipsters.

is it like the old Weekender ?!
Report onlooker May 6, 2018 10:04 AM BST
More like that Racing Plus paper that, apparently, ceased, recently. -  Overnight Decs, not 4-day cards
Report tyred May 6, 2018 10:20 AM BST
I miss the old Weekender that came out on Wednesdays (or was it Thursday) and I looked for horses with multiple entries (especially newcomers or FTO for the season) and backed accordingly, nice angle that and paid off a few times !

Are you thinking of the Sporting Chronicle Handicap Book, tyred

Should support it really just to put pressure on that other rag

no, The Weekender it was called, it was an arm of The Sporting Life and when that ceased, became an arm of Racing Post for a while and then kapute Sad

How on earth is it going to be viable?

They need either buyers or advertisers. It costs £1.90, so they won't get much from buyers. Why would advertisers buy space in anything that will get the same eyeballs as the RP or daily non-racing press?

The old Weekender had an intriguing column called Hot Gossip. Much better than any tipsters, then or now.

The Weekender is still available isnt it? Or is it just the online version.
Report tyred May 6, 2018 1:21 PM BST

Incorrect - still get it every week - for the Results Pull-Out - so that I still have a Paper Results refefence, aswell as the main online method  of study - and have done as such for decades

Like to see a whole Meeting in front of me on one page - aswell as/rather than just a Single race Result on a Screen.

Slightly off the subject but does anyone remember "The Weekend Special"?....it was a sealed booklet ...used to get it at local station bookstall late 70s/early 80s

I used to get it by post on Thursday's in the late '60's - with the vagaries of the postal system sometimes didn't arrive until the Monday and invariably winners had been tipped ( maybe an early case of  "aftertiming"!)

I first bought the Sporting Chronicle handicap Book (now the Weekender) in 1954 the week that Never Say Die won the Derby. It cost a Tanner and fitted in your jacket pocket.
I didn't back Never Say Die but my landlady asked me to put ten bob EW on for her as it was her favourite expression.

If I remember right the Weekend Special was produced by Websters who also published the Racing Specialist which came out on a Friday and had an alleged 'inside info' feature on pages two and three called Off The Bit that developed a a cult following.I have the front page of the final edition of the Racing Specialist stuck in a scrap book. It is for the week ending December 20-21 1985. It was first published around the turn of the century so had a long lifespan. The final edition has a picture of Planetman on, who would be running in the Welsh National won by Run And Skip.
