When she was on with those two idiots on a Friday night, she kept saying she had bets on various horse. I thought she had retired apparently she still retained her licence so it was illegal and she should have known.

With bets like that why did she bother. I had heard her during a programme saying that she had a bet and the team commented on them at times.
Report sageform December 6, 2017 7:47 PM GMT
A jockey I knew very well said that the trainer he rode for didn't let his jockeys bet with bookmakers but if they told him which horse they wanted to be on he put the money on for them. A long time ago but probably still goes on.

Even if we were to believe this is just the tip of an iceberg surely the BHA need to make a point whatever Struthers might say.

The big surprise is that she actually made a profit.
Report carrot1960 December 6, 2017 10:02 PM GMT
Hayley Turner has expressed her regret after a "mistake" concerning the opening of an internet betting account left her facing a British Horseracing Authority disciplinary panel hearing on December 14.

Britain's most successful woman jockey officially retired from the saddle at the end of the 2015 turf season and after initially establishing a media career with At The Races and ITV Racing, Turner recently opted to return to race riding in France.

However, her decision to open an online account following her initial retirement prompted a BHA inquiry as she technically still held a licence, leaving the rider in breach of the rules and "deeply embarrassed" by the situation.

Paul Struthers, chief executive of the Professional Jockeys Association, said in a statement: "Following her retirement from the saddle in November 2015, Hayley opened an online betting account in her name registered to her home address, the first ever betting account she had opened.

"Even though she was officially retired, Hayley subsequently took part in a number of one-off, invitational events and had some warm-up rides to prepare for them, and held a licence from the BHA enabling her to take part in those events.

"It was only this summer that Hayley decided to return to race riding more fully in France.

"Even though Hayley no longer saw herself as a jockey, and placed no bets whilst actively riding, she did place bets whilst holding a licence which technically placed her in breach of the Rules of Racing, something Hayley entirely accepts.

"There were a total of 164 such bets over a period of approximately 18 months, with a median average stake of £10 and a mean average stake of £18.62, which generated a total profit of £160.

"Hayley has co-operated fully with the BHA and has been transparent and honest throughout. The BHA has confirmed to Hayley's representatives that beyond the Rule breaches themselves, it has no further integrity concerns over the bets or Hayley herself.

"Hayley is absolutely devastated at her mistake and deeply embarrassed and sorry for it. Her hearing is scheduled for next Thursday, December 14."

Joint champion apprentice in 2005, Turner was the first woman to ride 100 winners in a year and is a three-time winner at the top level.

In line with BHA policy, racing's rulers offered no further comment.

Just a mistake some fun bets when not riding, stopped now riding time to move on.
Report Storm Alert December 6, 2017 10:21 PM GMT
Clearly just fun bets and apparaenlty not since she has started riding again mainly in France but I can't seen the BHA setting a precedent and letting her off.  Maybe they will do a "Chemical Nicky" and ban her for a few months out of season (in this case in the middle of the jumps season).
Report TheFear December 6, 2017 10:30 PM GMT
Those sayng it was nothing etc are going by what Struthers is saying. Might be true but he's being allowed to set the agenda. Looks like we only have his word for all this because the case hasn't been heard yet.
Report TheFear December 6, 2017 10:32 PM GMT
The BHA need to try and think a way around this scenario because every time someone is in trouble they cry to the press while the BHA won't comment. Hughie Morrison's defence is similar.

Until we have the facts of what and when it is difficult to comment.

BUT, although Struthers seems to be driving the background to the story, he should ABSOLUTELY NOT at this stage know anymore about this issue than you and I. If he does, it is unacceptable, If he does not, his comments are totally inappropriate and presumptuous.
Report blackbarn December 7, 2017 12:22 AM GMT
Nothing on the BHA site, and all "informed sources" seem to report "no comment" from the BHA.   So the BHA communicates a serious issue to the PJA and presumably to the offending party, but does not tell anyone else, nor when questioned has any comment on the matter.
It's hard to make this up.
Report sageform December 7, 2017 8:24 AM GMT
A silly mistake but she did hand in her license before opening an account and made no attempt to hide that. Stupid not to realise that taking out a license again means she should shut down the betting account but the fact that she kept it open and made no secret of that on Live TV tells me she was careless not dishonest.
Report equine flew December 7, 2017 9:06 AM GMT
I 100% agree with Blackburn, Struthers (on behalf of the BHA) are the regulatory body in this matter and should not be presenting anything other than the basic facts of the allegation.

A premptive defence of the issue, demonstrates an unregulated investigation before any formal hearing which is incorrect.

I think it is a non-issue but that is not the point.  The BHA need to be neutral until a formal investigation is completed.
