Always On The Run - 2.05 at Kempton - 6/1 with a few books, 7.2 on betfair

Missed the party a bit here, too busy crying over more odds on in running losers, but the show must goes on. Someone else pointed this horse out to me (TheSecret), absolutely loved this horse's first run for Tom George on New Year's Eve. It was his first run over fences, crazy fresh, too keen, but jumped like a bunny. I really think this horse is going to be a lot better over fences, and although he's bred to stay 3 miles, I do think dropping to 16f is the right thing to do if you're not going to put him in a hood. He ran such a nice race at Warwick, and it doesn't look like much was expected, because he was sent off at 12/1 - whether that was because of fitness, or doubts about the ground, I'm not sure, but he'll be getting some better ground tomorrow, and these other trainers have all been doing so well with these ex McCain horses, that I wouldn't expect this to be any different.

Hopefully.. Just blast him from the front, catch me if you can, a bit like when they had Stellar Notion, Nacarat etc etc they love their front runners at Kempton.

Saturday

Modus in the Betfair hurdle - Currently 11.0 on betfair

He's only top price 7/1 with the books at the moment, sure to drift out with them if he stays at this price, but this whole reaction of Bazza picking that Mullins horse is way over the top.

Where do I start with Modus?

2nd in the Champion bumper last season, had Yanworth behind him in 4th, and the rest. A fine 3rd in the Punchestown bumper too.

Both of these runs were achieved with a pretty average trainer in Robert Stephens, sorry Stevo.

JP buys him, whacks him with Nicholls. Wins easily on his first two starts, but throws a bad one in when last seen on heavy ground. Not that it was terrible, but it was still disappointing. It wouldn't come as a surprise to hear that the stable strike rate was 10% in December, something rarely seen for the champion trainer.

The stable are flying again now though, 33%. Even the horses losing are running crackers.

He's got a mark of 139, which looks lenient to me. He beat Charmix off levels pretty cosily, and I know that horse has improved for stepping up in trip but the handicapper thinks he's 145 rated. Charmix beat Emerging Force by 38 lengths, and we saw him win a handicap off 129 today. I know Emerging Force might of ran below par that day, and he probably improved for the step up in trip too today, but there is just so many horses that Modus has beat that make him look a horse who could turn out to be top class.

I suppose there is question marks over the horse on heavy ground, we don't know if that's what we are going to get yet. A dry day tomorrow, and it might chuck it down on Saturday, but at least it will be sloppy ground, not tacky.

I think the horse is miles better than his mark of 139. I know other horses are probably chucked in too, but I feel like there is a lot more to come.

Off the course for almost a year and having first run for Ron Barr -A 5f low rated hcap like this is definitely within his scope - he looks like he was full of speed when you look some of his 2yo form for Brian Meehan - 33/1 far too big imo"

Ron Barr actually has two in the race - his other one looks to have some good formlines recently MIGHTASWELLSMILE 14/1 - im having an interest on this one too but im speculating a bit more on the more unexposed type.

Thought as it is a bank holiday Monday over there and results are usually all over the place on such days, I would have an e/w play at wonderful old Southwell 13.50 on Young Tom 40/1, this horse has been passed on from Michael Appleby to Mandy Rowland via Sue Smith, didn't really do much over hurdles for Smith and is now returned to the a/w off an attractive mark.

The horse has had a pipe-opener at Wolverhampton where it was completely tailed off but ran very free and having been with the leaders, quickly fell out the back and came home in its own time, returned to Southwell where it has run well previously, now acquitted with a tongue tie for the first time and the only mount of the day for Rob Hornby, although in my mind I think it may still need this to put it straight, at the price I would kick myself if I didn't play it and it was involved.

Thought he was still on the upgrade 2 runs back, Joe Fanning rides for the first time (takes over from Paula Muir) so hopefully he can make a difference. Been off for 59 days but the trainer can get them to win after an absence. No illusions that this is a tough race though.

My old friend Be Perfect runs in the 5.10 at Wolves tommorow. Despite having won twice this season his best run was at wolves in April when he was the 33/1

rag of the race. Led most the way  ( as usual ) only to be mown down late on by the fav Goldolphins Hamada that went on to win class 2s at York and Newmrkt, before
comfortably winning the G3 Geoffrey Freer at Newbury last week. Be perfect was the only one to make a race of it at wolves. Hamada ran off 86 that day, gone up about

25lb since.

A reproduction of that wolver run will surely see the old boy go close tomorrow. Got the ideal draw in 1 , again ridden by Jane Elliot who was on in the

aforementioned race. Usually back him to lay ir, and prob will put up a short lay, but really think he wont be far away tomorrow. Currently 9/1, but very often

drifts come race time. Will be there to cheer him home Grin .

Have a good day guys.

4.00 Brighton: MISS RECYCLED 33/1 EW BOG

Lightly raced 3yo filly by Royal Applause, hcap dubutant for Michael Madgwick.

First try at a mile.... which is the overarching basis of my speculation . Not going crazy so will try and get some inflated prices on the exchange and hope for a place

The run at Salisbury LTO,  over a trip just shy of 10f ,  did paint a picture  that a shorter trip would be more suitable - so potentially the combination of this  trip ,  hcap debut , and imo a favourable draw around here for a potential pace setter, will give the horse a better chance of improving on his 5 lifetime career starts to date.

He looks a small agile type that would be suited to the track - pays my money takes me chances

Had this one marked down to play when a stronger jockey was engaged to ride it, Leicester 18.25 Ski Blast 9/1, not a huge price but has had two quick runs recently when apprentice ridden, that implied with firmer handling to conserve it's energy, that it would be able to win, Tom Eaves booked today, hopefully he can get things right.

6.50 Wolverhampton : ELSIE VIOLET 11/1 EW BOG

This fillies race at Wolves tomorrow (class 5 ) looks a far easier task for Elsie than her debut at York in late July ( class 3 )- and looks worth speculating with imo at BOG.

Elsie failed to go in the stalls last time at Newmarket on 17.08.18 in an 8k class 4 Novice Auction Stakes, it was backed just before the off last time from big prices than the current 11/1 available - so taking that all into account i just think there could be some unexposed ability with this maiden filly - The owner Edwin S Phillips could actually have an interesting few days imo  ...quite like the look of his 4yo EQUIMOU that is entered at Ascot on Saturday.

Lewis Edmunds takes the ride and is an unusual booking for the yard - first time he has ever ridden for the yard and his only ride there tomorrow.

3.50 Southwell: MURCHISON RIVER 10/1 EW BOG

This is another one that i backed recently at Sedgefield on the 30th August - it got declared a Non Runner late morning - why is was pulled i dont know - it was good to firm ground at Sedgefield over a 2m trip ...maybe they thought the pace was going to be too quick or just decided to wait for a hcap.

Steps up in trip tomorrow for the first time for Sam England on his hcap debut - looking at the forecast tomorrow Southwell must be only one of a few remote areas of the British isles that has some potential rain - will be interesting to see if it materialises by midday...but if it does i cant see it making a difference to the current ground which is being stated as Good by Turftrax at 7.30 am this morning.

Im a big fan of this Sam England as a trainer - much shrewder than a lot of NH trainers out there.

Unbelievable how well that Red Charmer's done since leaving Duffield; never had her down as a bad trainer, but RC's performances since leaving her makes you think! I wonder what her feelings about RC are now!

Hoping to stop my run of recent losers with Nadine 16/1 in the 15.25 Newcastle, has had 3 inauspicious runs over inadequate trips, given the filly's parentage of Nathaniel and Opening Ceremony, but on each run, especially the debut and third outings on the all weather surface at Wolverhampton, has shown definite signs of promise and is now stepped up to an extended 1m 4f trip that should be much more suitable for her.

In addition a hood is being used for the first time which will assist Danny Tudhope in keeping the horses mind on racing rather than the other runners or the immediate surroundings, as whether by accident or design, she found a fair amount of trouble in running in her last race.

5.35-REDGRAVE they have been waiting for soft ground for this fellow but ran a encouraging race at the track lto and could run well at big odds.

The fav Spiced 7/4 should be going close in this finale , could potentially be a steering job if running up to form with its recent 2nd place to Roof Garden.

However , im a punter and im taking a view of trying to find an unexposed one to get some place money or better. I'm taking a chance on this Antonio Fresu ridden first time out switcher from Ed Dunlop to Mrs Ilka Gansera-Leveque.

Just mention this trainer Mrs Ilka Gansera-Leveque and alot of heads drop , but she does have a winner most years with the limited horses in the yard...she isn't as bad as Aytach Sadik ! lol - She has had a winner every year since starting to train ...bar 2012 - which is far better than many other trainers who have more horses

The ones she wins with at prices tend to be with this sort of profile of DOW...lightly raced unexposed types. Should go well on the track as American bred Daddy was suited to it ...coming 3rd in the Breeders Cup Classic

I've been following this horse waiting for any potential opportunity

1. I think its overpriced at 20/1 BOG.

2. I believe its been running at the wrong trip since joining the Brennan yard

3. Its well handicapped based on a couple of wins for Olly Murphy last July/August

Potential Negatives - Trainer has never had a winner at Worcester - The jockey has only ever had one ride around here.

Both are making their hurdle debuts today - the yards seem to have other interests on the card with more fancied chances by looking at the markets  ....but these two are seemingly not being considered in this particular race.

I sometimes back horses with this mindset ....i call it my "Give and Take rule" i.e. what a yard may give to the market ( with other races on the same day ) they take with others which everyone doesn't expect.

Welsh trainer Christopher Mason's 2y olds at Fos Las today - my preference is for Atty's Edge ..despite the price.

3.25 GLAMOROUS CRESCENT 25/1 - EW BOG - first time in a nursery

3.55 ATTYS EDGE 66/1 - EW BOG - debut

I've followed  Christopher Mason for many years - he was one of the late Bryn Palling's owners before taking out a training license in 2011 - he and his wife Annabelle know the time of day with horses as they are successful breeders.

Its not often you will see his small yard running a 2yo , in fact this year is the first year since 2013 that you have seen him run any at all - he has only ever trained one 2yo winner which was in August 2013 at Chepstow called Heavens Edge ( third run) , and that was his only 2yo runner that year.

This year he has four in his yard that have made it to the racecourse as a 2yo, three of which he has bred ( Atty's Edge, Gilt Edge, Mason's Belle)  and one by another breeder/owner ( Glamorous Crescent ).

At the prices i have to play - they always try when they get to the course does the Mason yard - It does look a tough job on paper for Attys so my stakes are reflecting that ...but it wouldnt surprise me if he were to run very well and get in the money at a massive price if any of the top 3 are not fit and ready.

Report RozelKid September 15, 2018 12:51 AM BST
I spent a good few hours looking at that  4.50 Lingfield this afternoon......and i wish i hadn't.

Chris Wall's 3yo THE FIDDLER is interesting with that step up in trip whilst being unexposed - it has an in form jockey doing the steering whilst getting that weight from all but one of the field , and the trainer is hitting form recently too.

I cant however find one winner over 1m4f from any horses that the Dam or Sire has produced on that Flat -  however im not really sure if its that important in a low rated race like this..... its probably something to not hold too much weight in so ive had a saver on it.

There are several of them that are unexposed - Jonathan Portman has two in this race "King Of Burgundy & Toormakeady"  he won this race in 2015 with a horse called Jack Bear when it was run on the AW ...KOB has an almost mirrored  profile as Jack Bear did i.e looking as if the 1m4f previous start highlighting it needing a longer trip and then winning on his 5th start over 1m6f

The owners of KOB also have a two horses running at Doncaster tomorrow , both for Charlie Hills and one of them ( PHEONIX OF SPAIN) is in the Group 2 before the Leger , he has won his last two and is entered in the Dewhurst and Royal Lodge - my point being that the connections are looking to be shrewd purchasers since they started out owning horses in 2014

I could go on and on - looks a really tough race to call and i shouldn't have looked at it for so long - ive had small EW saver on THE FIDDLER 12/1 , and split my normal stakes between  KING OF BURGUNDY 20/1 WIN BOG  and TOORMAKEADY 16/1 WIN BOG - the latter has that 5lb claimer on board for his hcap debut.

4.40 Brighton: SPRING DIXIE 20/1 EW BOG

This one was winning in Jersey last year at Les Landes - but this year i noticed that he wasn't being trained in the same way by local trainer A Malzard.

Horses that tend to run well at Les Landes do to like it at Brighton because of the similarities of the courses - over the years ive noticed that many local trainers buy horses from Brighton sellers.

I think there is an interesting angle with this one . Back to 1m4f and it being switched to Trainer Natalie Lloyd-Beavis - she won 3 races with a horses here at Brighton in 2015 with a horse called ROLY TRICKS - It landed these 3 races after  just a couple of runs at Les Landes in the summer.

Spring Dixie led until 2f out but weakened quickly - keeping it in the note book for the next few weeks

I only meant if anyone has a source to glean the switchers from. Mine is not freely available.

I can get the Flat switchers, but not the jumps - let me know anyone if you can point me in the right direction.

Trainer Jean McGregor , 5.15 Kelso- SIERRA OSCAR 22/1 EW

She hasn't had a winner since 2009 ScaredScaredScared - so my stakes are as small as they get

Just a few interesting pointers imo - - the 3rd place at Perth in  May wasn't that bad considering it was giving the winner masses of weight - been dropped 10lb since too. The winner that day " My Escapade " came out and won again at Cartmel by 8 lengths over 2m6f ...and there are some form-lines that show that it wasnt that bad, thus making Sierra Oscar's performance now look a bit better

Im scraping the barrel ? maybe - but it looks a race where there is much to ask about the majority of them.

Small interest only .

Correction- its been dropped 14lb since that run in May - jockey Dave Irving takes off another 3lb on top of that.
