First ever stewards cup I saw.On the tuesday then, remember Sir Peter calling him home(led almost all the way if I remember) at 50/1.Brian Swift trained him then but i can't remember the jockey.I notice the 7f handicap at galway today is named after him, that's what brought it into my head.Anyone recall the jockey that day?

My memory of Ahonoora was that he was stepping dowen in trip, and was 6 lengths clear after a furlong or so.
Report Deltâ August 3, 2013 10:46 AM BST

ged -re. 1977, wasn't the Stewards run on a Friday back then?

Reason I ask is that myself and a couple of pals went down to the meeting for four days (Tuesday - Friday) and I'm sure I remember seeing Calibina's race.  I think. Grin

One thing that I clearly remember is Lester getting beat on Amaranda, the hot favourite in the Molecomb, by Ron Hutchinson on Hatta for Sheikh Mo & John Dunlop.

Just found that race on You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2tdWaNWdhE) and didn't realise that Sheikh Mo's colours have not  always been maroon and white.

I can remember Clive Brittain being interviewed after Standaan won. He was talking about the young lad who rode it and said something like ' When these kids come to my yard I assess whether they are capable enough to get their licence out. If not, I advise that they might try and become Prime Minister'.  Jesus, 34 years ago !!

toprated - as outpost says, Stewards Cup was Tuesday then.

The winners that day were:-

Burleigh
Hatta
Calibina
Pollerton
Carriage Way
Skyliner

The last 2 gave a double for Ryan Price/Brian Taylor.

Christy Roche rode Pollerton for Paddy Prendergast.

Cheers Top2 rated, enjoyed watching that again. And fond memories of some of the other runners - remember seeing Crimson Silk in a prolonged final furling battle with a filly called Mofida at Haydock one day - the latter ended up being the grand dam of Zafonic. And Valeriga too, a rare sprinter in the D'Alessio colours. Racing in general had a much higher profile then and no real competition in the betting market. How times have changed so relatively quickly.
