... that earned a place in National history but never ever won the race?

Two stick out in my memory:

Crisp - the obvious one
and
Freddie - forever the bridesmaid

STREWTH  - We are in the middle of the FLAT Season.

However - I will give tyou two or three ...

Freddie - Reg Tweedie Point-to-Pointer - Runner-up - TWICE

Mr Snugfit  - Only beaten because the jockey of the Winner - Last Suspect - talked the owner, Anne Duchess of Westminster - into running Last Suspect, as the stable's other horse, his mount, was withdrawn.

Sunnyhillboy  - the NOSE runner-up up to  Neptune Collongnes in the most desperate PHOTO-Finish in years.

In any year before the now dreaded 'Pixel' Photo-Finish decisions; [b]it would have been an honourable DEAD-HEAT - after 4 mile plus. Sad
-------------

Not had a bet in the race since the Mr Snugfit sickener Cry.

So did my father, no guesses for what my father's name was.

Talking of Freddie was one of the horses that beat him related to the current President ?

A list of the placed horses from it's inception.

Interesting to see how many horses finished 2nd twice.

Greasepaint stands out, 2nd twice and a third.

Perhaps the Strangest thing In grand national History ,is that Red Rum won  on his first Ever race at Aintree Over five Furlongs (dead Heated) Plain

Does anyone know the Name of the horse he dead heated with ? I wonder what became of Him Happy
Report sparrow July 21, 2018 7:05 AM BST
casemoney,  The horse was called Curlicue and was ridden by Lester Piggott.
Report ged July 21, 2018 9:39 AM BST
Curlicue was a filly trained by Ginger Dennistoun, then father-in-law of John Lawrence (later Lord Oaksey). The latter describes in his book how he set off to Aintree that day to try to get a wedge on the filly who was expected to win.....

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=3ujNCwAAQBAJ&pg=PT164&dq=%22curlicue%22+%22blue+spider%22&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiKzIOMk8nQAhWsKsAKHc3lBtMQ6AEIHTAA#v=onepage&q=%22curlicue%22%20%22blue%20spider%22&f=false

(The DH was a judge's call, as the camera was not in use that day). The race wasn't on TV, as it was the first on the card, and the day's TV coverage started with race 2, the Coronation Hurdle.

She was ridden by Nelson Guest. Lester Piggott was at Newbury that day.

Curlicue won her next race at Kempton, and then ran 4th of 6 in a race at Bath on Oaks day, and I can't find a trace of her after that. Guest rode her in all 3 of those races.
Report ged July 21, 2018 9:51 AM BST
...she produced foals in 1970,71 and 72. The 1971 foal was Colour Photo, who won his only 2yo outing for Ryan Price. I think I vaguely remeber that horse. Looks like he was owned by Kris Maharaj. I think he's the guy who got banged up for murder, though the case has been disputed for many years now.
