The Crabbie’s Grand National
Class 1, Grade 3, £1,000,000 Total Prize Fund. 4.15pm, Aintree, Saturday, April 5, 2014. Four miles, three and a half furlongs. For seven-year-olds and upwards which, up to and including March 17, have been placed first, second, third or fourth in a chase of three miles or more and which are allotted a rating of 120 or more by the BHA Head of Handicapping following a review of the horses entered and after taking account of races run up to and including February 9. Horses which are not qualified for a rating in Great Britain or Ireland at closing may also be entered. Such horses may be eligible for a weight providing the Handicapper is satisfied that the horse’s racecourse performances up to and including February 9 would merit a minimum rating of 120. To qualify, horses must have run at least three times in chases run under the Rules of Racing of the same Recognised Racing Authority up to and including February 9. At the Handicapper’s discretion, such horses may be allocated a rating. The decision of the BHA Head of Handicapping shall be final. No penalties after publication of the weights. Entries closed January 28, entries revealed January 29 (115 entries). Weights revealed Tuesday, February 11. First scratchings’ deadline February 25. Second scratchings’ deadline March 18. Five-day confirmation stage March 31. Final declaration stage 10.00am, April 3. Form figures supplied by Weatherby and are correct up to and including the racing of Monday, January 27.

And most prices on Betfair aren't as good as the bookies' prices. Why? Because of their rule change 2 years ago that prevents layers
from making a book. When will they realise that they have to allow exposure offset in handicaps? It's killing the liquidity in the
big races.
Report Janthefish January 31, 2014 12:50 PM GMT
When you take commission into account, bookies prices a lot better. The greatest 'publicity race' of the year and B/F take a short-sighted approach.
Report shockster January 31, 2014 1:26 PM GMT
I only lay horses to consolidate a profit from time to time and usually am just a backer.  Don't know why Betfair just all in run or not.  If a horse is balloted out it should be factored into the price.  Most people on here would understand the risks and nobody on here is the once a year punter.
Report harry callaghan January 31, 2014 4:34 PM GMT
shockster not sure what you mean by this post can you explain??

i'm taking it that you mean if a horse is balloted out you shouldn't get your money back, am i reading this correctly??

could you clarify sorry don't mean to put you on the spot, just wouldn't be agreeing if that is what you meant
Report PeteTheBloke February 2, 2014 1:45 AM GMT
That's what he's saying Harry. Some days I agree and some days I wouldn't. Provided the rules are clear to everyone
I don't see why it would matter. It's the way the Aussie ante-post markets work on here.

I know I whinge about this regularly, but the fact that BF allows exposure offset when laying on golf markets, but
won't allow it on the National, is ridiculous.
Report metro john February 2, 2014 9:30 AM GMT
Home farm could be interesting if the Handicapper doesn't ruin his mark.?
Report jasey February 2, 2014 4:09 PM GMT
Experience is always an issue with a 7 year old.
No form on good ground
Report Janthefish February 3, 2014 1:34 AM GMT
Pete the bloke is right (for once) you can lay bets on the US Masters(an invitation event) and tough luck on the layers if the person they laid is not invited. Yet the layers aren't allowed that luxury in the National. B/F 'wants' to protect them and themselves so that prices offered are now a joke,
Report shockster February 3, 2014 9:03 AM GMT
Harry, Yes I am saying its hard luck if your horse is balloted out.  We all know only 40 Max will go to post.  I am a backer 99% of the time, so it is not my profit I am looking at.  It would have to be clear and state from day 1 "All in run or not".  Just my point of view.
Report Janthefish February 3, 2014 8:50 PM GMT
Betfair could easily monitor this but run by accountants who haven't a clue about betting. More concerned with mugs playing the slots.
Report harry callaghan February 7, 2014 11:29 AM GMT
shockster and pete sorry for late reply

well i have to disagree on balloting as am a believer in people getting there money back, if your said horse doesn't make the race through not qualifying...

at the end of the day it is up to the punter to decide whether he thinks he will make it or not if the case presents itself, if a horse is injured and is a qualifier that horse is considered a runner and you would lose your money on that non runner, that is after all ante post betting...but on balloting i can't agree after all it isn't the owner trainers fault he hasn't made the race

on the other side of the coin - what i would say in regards non runners, which is what i think you are both annoyed about, is the fact of say at the moment the weights are not out, so in this regard i would tend to agree with you if this is what you meant??

but once the weights are out i do agree on the ballot system, hope this makes sense
Report BJG February 7, 2014 5:46 PM GMT
It has indeed - i usually have 30-40 laid at this stage but with the new rules i cant be bothered tbh and av a grand total of 2 laid! Assume there is plenty of more like me and it shows with the big gaps in prices
Report PeteTheBloke February 7, 2014 6:51 PM GMT
To lay 30-40 you need a big bank BJG. I estimated a figure before and I stick by it: about £30,000 minimum bank
if you want to try and make a book in the AP market. 3 years ago any mug with £200 could throw prices up and
take his chances. That was what Betfair was made for.
Report penzance February 7, 2014 10:55 PM GMT
I can't see why when the weights are published
you can't offset lays who are in the top 40 of
the h'cap.Any other lays should then need more
money as you have to do now.
Makes sense?

Report BJG February 11, 2014 1:01 PM GMT
Reaction from connections following the unveiling of the weights for the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree.

Enda Bolger - Mossey Joe (11st 1lb); Quantitativeeasing (10st 9lb); Quiscover Fontaine (9st 10lb)

"I think he (Mossey Joe) looks highly rated for a hunter chaser, but all his best form seems to be in the latter half of the season. We intend to give him a run in a point-to-point on Sunday week. He's settled in fine. I don't think he (Quantitativeeasing) is qualified to run in the race yet, so we are running out of time as the ground has been so heavy. That's a nice weight for Quiscover Fontaine. He'll probably go for the cross-country race at Cheltenham first."

Paul Webber - Cantlow (11st)

"He ran well at Cheltenham last time, but that sounds a bit of a hike. The aim with him, though, is to go to Cheltenham, but if the ground came up heavy we would have to think about our options."

Hilary Parrott - Wayward Prince (10st 13lb)

"It's a nice weight. I certainly won't run him in the mud beforehand because he hates it. If I did run him before Aintree, it would probably be in the Grimthorpe at Doncaster. If the ground isn't right, and I can get him fit enough, he will probably go to Aintree without another run."

Rebecca Curtis - Teaforthree (10st 12lb); Bob Ford (9st 3lb)

"I think that's a lovely weight for Teaforthree. I'm very happy. He's got 5lb less than less year so you'd have to be very hopeful. I do want to get two runs into him before Aintree so he'll probably run at Ascot on Saturday and then in something at Cheltenham. Bob Ford won't be going as we know he wouldn't stay."

Martin Brassil - Double Seven (10st 11lb)

"I was probably expecting something between 10st 10lb and 11st, but that's what I thought he might get off his mark. At least we know we will get a run and it's great to have a horse good enough for the race. He is a spring/summer horse, but he's fit as we can have him in this wet weather. Hopefully we'll try to get a race into him beforehand in mid-March and there's a chance he might come to Cheltenham for the four-miler."

Donald McCain - Across The Bay (10st 11lb); Kruzhlinin (10st 6lb); Real Milan (9st 6lb)

"It's a grand weight for Across The Bay, a good racing weight. He's in three races at the weekend, but I'm not sure where we'll go yet. That's also a decent weight (for Kruzhlinin) but it's going to be a struggle for Real Milan."

Thomas Gibney - Lion Na Bearnai (10st 10lb)

"I can't believe that. It's good in a sense that we'll probably get a run, but that's more than last year (he missed the race due to injury). I don't know where they got that weight from, but there's nothing we can do about that. The plan all along was the Bobbyjo (Fairyhouse) in two weeks and then Liverpool, so that's what we'll probably do."

Richard Rowe - Tatenen (10st 3lb)

"It's a great weight but I'm not sure Andy Thornton (regular jockey) will see it that way. I wouldn't be too pessimistic as a lot of horses will drop out between now and then. He'll probably go Cheltenham first, especially if there's any doubt about him getting in. His record round Aintree has been somewhat unlucky."

Jim Dreaper - Goonyella (10st 1lb)

"The weight doesn't concern me, the problem is how many horses are above him. The plan is the National, but we are well aware we face an anxious wait. He won't be going to Cheltenham, but we are keen to run him agan in mid-March somewhere."

Jo Hughes - Soll (10st)

"He's off the weight same as last year, but it went down to the wire last year so we might be sweating again. It would be nice to know if he gets in earlier this year, so we'll have to keep aiming him at the National. He's due to run at Haydock on Saturday."

Warren Greatrex - Tranquil Sea (9st 12lb)

"It's going to be touch and go. He's still got to qualify for the race by finishing in the first three over three miles before March 17. He will run next Wednesday at Doncaster in a three-mile veterans' chase. If he doesn't get in, the Topham could be an alternative. If he ran well at Doncaster, we'd obviously monitor the National."

Peter Maher - Big Shu (10st 8lb)

"That's a great weight. If he (the handicapper) gave me 11st, I wasn't going to go. It's now tempting to go back to Cheltenham (for the cross-country race). He's definitely a dark horse for the National, there's no question about that. Five National winners were bred on my grandfather's farm so we're no strangers to Liverpool."

Tidal Bay dropped 7lb in Grand National weights

By Andrew Dietz 12:00PM 11 FEB 2014

CRABBIE’S Grand National topweight Tidal Bay has been allocated a mark 7lb shy of his official rating as the weights for the £1 million Aintree spectacular on April 5 were revealed in London on Tuesday.

Although heading the list on 11st 10lb, the veteran chaser, who was given the same weight last year before being ruled out by injury, has been issued a mark equating to a rating of 161, which falls short of his 168 official rating.

Reacting to the unveiling of the weights, Tidal Bay's owner Graham Wylie said on At The Races: “We’re very pleased with that. The handicapper has given him a chance and we just hope the horse is fit and well on the day.

“It could be his swansong and we hope he gets luck in running and runs his usual style of running on best late on in the race.”

Next in the weights specifically framed by the BHA’s head of handicapping Phil Smith are the Nicky Henderson-trained duo Long Run (11st 9lb) and Hunt Ball (11st 7lb). With Hennessy Gold Cup hero Triolo D'Alene on 11st 6lb, the champion trainer has three of the top five in the handicap as he seeks a first success in the National.

Last season’s Coral Welsh Grand National winner Monbeg Dude [10st 9lb] joins Tidal Bay, who unseated Brian Hughes in the 2011 National, and Triolo D'Alene as the 20-1 co-favourite with Betfred, while this year's Welsh National second Hawkes Point, one of seven contenders alongside Tidal Bay for Paul Nicholls, is on 10st 6lb.

Not long after the weight were out, Ladbrokes went 25-1 the field for the Grand National.

Teaforthree, third at Aintree last year, has been dropped 5lb from 12 months ago to 10st 12lb, while every horse above Bog Warrior, tenth on 11st 2lb, has had their handicap mark compressed, mostly by small amounts apart from Tidal Bay.

Smith said: “I had three nightmare horses. I freely admit Mossey Joe [11st 1lb] might be 8lb too high or 8lb too low. The others were Pandorama [10st 2lb] and Quel Esprit [10st], who both ran in a hunter chase at the weekend.”

On his other contenders Wylie added: “We put Boston Bob [11st 3lb] in to see what he gets and he’s an interesting runner on better ground.

“On His Own [11st 3lb] needs a bit of luck in running this time as he’s been there twice and fallen twice when going well.

“We’re not sure about Prince De Beauchene [10st 10lb] as he has lost his form of late, but he’s a good age, has a nice weight and may be suited by a stamina test.”

Report Waiting for Godot February 11, 2014 4:43 PM GMT
I had Burton Port added to the ante-post list on 14th October last and gratefully accepted the three-figure odds offered a week later but these were high-risk investments, it may be that he  will not ever recover his old form. Certainly he  struck me as a potential National type, classy but not quite good enough to win at the highest level while running very well, but with a great attitude and appeared to be staying on doggedly in many of his races. It would certainly be a fine training achievement to bring him back to his best after such a lengthy absence because of injury
Report Millerracing67 February 11, 2014 6:11 PM GMT
Like the ew chances of T FOR 3 again this year, great effort last year & being 5lb lower is a help & would hope for a slightly less aggressive ride this time round on him.
Monbeg Dude would also have sound ew chances imo.
Looking forward to the GREAT RACE as always.

SUNNYHILLBOY for me, Jonjo's first one in the weights, and a ready staying on winner of hurdle at Cheltenham in December.

Wouldn't surprise me to see him run in the Petertemps Hurdle Final at the Festival, and will run off 146 (4lb higher than when beaten by a whisker in 2012.

Only other positives for me at moment are CAPE TRIBULATION and SIRE COLLONGES.

Still like Alvarado his owners have gone close before. Monbeg Dude and Away We Go.

A highly paid journalist has never read the conditions for the GRAND NATIONAL
and unless they have changed recently, any horse shall run to its handicap unless
higher weighted horses are withdrawn, this journo nominates STANDING ORDERS to pick up a penalty
so that it will get a run in the race, this is not sound judgement from a highly paid journo!!!!
A horse can win EVERY DAY from publication of the weights, to the day of the race and will NOT get a penalty.

Looking at the GN on purple. Matched so far £81,000 which is about £2000-4000 of actual bets with the way they calculate it.
BF matched is £306,000 which is £153,000 of actual bets. It's a big difference. BF's would have been a lot more in years gone
by.

I suppose the turnover will improve at BD but people get used to not even looking.

I am aware that some would claim "aftertiming", but this ACTUALLY happened.
On my way to pick up my newspapers about 7.55, i spotted a folded £20 note
on a manhole cover about 7 or 8 feet from my front door, picked it up and went
back into my flat and placed it on my radiator to dry out, carried on to pick
up my papers, on returning home I spotted a £5 note against a wall which I had
passed earlier, nearer to my door I found another £5 note with a £10 close to it,
I have no idea how I missed them earlier, decided to put the money on a horse and
checked the prices, went to LADs as there prices were better, put £20 EW on
RIGADIN DE BEACHENE.
Since a youngster had never believed in luck, but what was that if not luck?
I run a small syndicate and had intended naming the horse but had not noticed
it last ran 301 days before, so I nominated CAPTAIN CHRIS.
Really strange set of circumstances!!!!!!!
