a few of his putts were outrageous regarding speed

I think at best 1 stroke lead going into sunday

it will be either a total disaster or a runaway winner, i wouldnt want to back him at current prices thats all i know, i am laying off i think i will just go for equal green all over and just watch how it unfolds, doing it that wayis equal to having backed an 8/1 winner so is sensible option for me.

Seems to have toughened up a lot in the afternoon, not seeing the big runs we had early on which doesn't really suit the chasers.  One scenario Webb plods along and has a big lead, if he comes back Tiger and Jordan could be in the mix.
Report ian merseyside May 12, 2018 9:43 PM BST
Can someone explain why Webb Simpson's putting style is not regarded as "anchoring".  Sky have just shown some close up video which clearly shows that he is anchoring the putter against his left forearm.  Maybe I have misinterpreted the rules.
Report mengmeng May 12, 2018 9:47 PM BST
anchoring would be putting the top of club on to the chest to use it as a pivot
Report xmoneyx May 12, 2018 9:47 PM BST
chest?
Report Total Bosman May 12, 2018 9:48 PM BST
I mean, this is solid but not exactly putting him under pressure.  Danny Lee with 9 pars the closest challenger.
Report mengmeng May 12, 2018 9:50 PM BST
i am dissapointed with the pack, they have been very poor, Letting Simpson just cruise. Gonna need a big implosion from Webb for anyone else to win now
Report ian merseyside May 12, 2018 9:55 PM BST
I've just found a video about the anchoring rule and it does show the method used by Webb Simpson saying it's ok.  However, I don't really see the point of the "anchoring" rule if a player can be allowed to anchor the putter down his forearm, therefore taking some of the nervousness out of the stroke and making it mush easier to repeat.
Report DickTurpin May 12, 2018 10:06 PM BST
You can't anchor against the body i.e. stomach/chest, chin, oxter...........

thanks but i bottled it and layed off so im not impressed with myself, i think it was more because of the course i layed with the water etc, but looking at historyeverything pointed to a Webb win and i probably should have taken more of a risk, if i had been on a big losing streak and needed a big win i might have but i have been laying off a few recently and its works out. a winning week is always good tho so very happy.
Report therhino May 13, 2018 11:59 AM BST
Webb much bigger on the exchanges than with the books. Massive difference percentage wise. All the talk is off the 7 shot lead, I'm thinking he leads by 9 as I don't really rate Danny. 1.16 seems more than fair - you would think he wins 9 out of 10 from this position.
Report mengmeng May 13, 2018 12:22 PM BST
for sure, how often has someone starting with a 7 shot lead on final day lost? cant be many
Report therhino May 13, 2018 1:18 PM BST
The answer is NEVER meng. 6 shots is the biggest 54 hole lead ever squandered on tour. Chamblee was saying this morning though that Arnold Palmer once lost a US Open when up by 7 with 9 to play (ouch), and of course there was Kaymer in Abu Dhabi but we are talking very rare air.
Report TheAnorak May 13, 2018 1:19 PM BST
DJ lost a six shot lead at the HSBC not that long ago - a final round 77.

And someone called Spencer Levin blew a six shot lead in the final round of the 2012 Phoenix Open - and coincidentally, his playing partner who watched that meltdown was Webb Simpson
Report therhino May 13, 2018 1:24 PM BST
The Levin one was special cos the guy who won a week earlier stood on the 72nd tee needing double bogey or better to win... and lost. Was a crazy fortnight, suspect it retired a few golf punters.

i was winning 18k if he won the masters- would have been biggest ever win. still won 4k on the event but annoying.

he clearly has outstanding credentials to win a major this year but still has to get over the mental hump. hopefully the way he finished off at the masters will be a big step to do that

btw tiger will win a major this year- i think carnoustie or pga.

I heard chucky's stats yday and couldn't believe it - was something like 86 top 10s in his career and just the 2 wins-  I knew he had 2 wins but had no idea he had so many top 10s - shame he couldn't get more really as he is a player who has a nice style and seems a good guy. Lovely shot from Tiger.

thank you hank. btw very impressed with koepka this week also. something about him which suggests that he's going to be more than just a one-off major winner like louis or adam scott. just has that winning thing about him that tiger used to have (admittedly nothing like as good a player.)
Report Hank Hill May 13, 2018 8:51 PM BST
Yep, great outing my Koepka after his recent injury. Agree that he should have another major in him, but it's so competitive for them-  for instance I rate Reed, but would never have had him as a Masters winner.

I rate Reed, but would never have had him as a Masters winner.

there's at least twenty or thirty players now who have a great chance of winning a major which is why it's so difficult to pick a winner.

and that's before you even count the outsiders.

annoying that simpson is going to win this week. I'm normally on him but didn't see him as a players champion Wink

not sure what the whole world number one thing means anyway. surely golf is all about winning majors.

for supposedly such a dominant player dj has won one major at the age of 33, compare that to tiger who won 14 by the same age.

i must admit when woods first came back here and started struggling (think it was the farmer's)

I prematurely wrote him off. but when you look at this he actually looks the best player! which in some ways says a lot about how good the current generation are that a 42 year old is showing them the way.

on the negative side, both today and yesterday his worst part of the rounds were at the end. the same happened at bay hill too. wonder if it's a fatigue thing, as you get older it becomes more difficult to maintain your concentration late into rounds. the woods of 15 years ago wouldn't have made these mental mistakes.

Sunday’s finish at TPC Sawgrass was the last time the event will be played in May, and although PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said he didn’t expect the move back to March next year to alter that trajectory it will be a tough act to follow after a dozen successful years in May.
Since moving to May in 2007 The Players has been won by Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler, all dramatic victories on a grand stage.
In May, the course played hard and fast and the weather largely cooperated to raise the profile of the event to if not fifth major status than at the least to a bona fide mid-major. Devil
