Same Shi8e, different year...

And yes we know it's (((((2019))))) ffs...

………....although it’s a week early on this ‘new schedule’ (used to be a time when we celebrated Paddy’s Day along with Arnie in Bay Hill). This schedule may become more interesting next year when we see who plays The Honda (HOME Game, just down the street) and God forbid, even the thought of possibly SKIPPING this event, and waiting for the PLAYERS? More of ‘a-pain-in-the-neck’ next year??? (and anyways, it’s not the same without Arnie).

THE BIG NEWS this week is just a-pain-in-the-neck (literally), as we’re notably without eight-time champion Eldrick. World #1 for a total of 683 weeks with those eight victories here at Bay Hill, tying his own ‘At-One-Venue’ TOUR Record (tink Firestone and Torrey Pines). That’s a BIG call by TIGER to cancel and tweet apologies (if Arnie was alive, he’d be here!). TV ratings will be well down on last years’ record viewing.
One of a few INVITATIONAL smaller field events on TOUR, the 'Florida Swing' is into week-two-of-four at its annual stop at ‘Arnie’s Place’. Since 2015, the PGA is awarding the winners at Bay Hill (and the Memorial Tournament) with a three-year exemption of status. That's one year longer than the customary perk. Winners will also be exempt into THE PLAYERS for three years.

Yet another event where the last 3 holes on Sunday will decide the winner - the 16th is an eagle/birdie opportunity even with a back left pin - 17th a long par three all over water and 18th with the pin back right is ‘never’ an easy par 4 (unless your name is Robert Gamez).

"It's not how big it is, it's what you do with it..."
"It's not the size of the boat, it's the motion of the ocean..."
"It's not how deep you fish, it's how you wiggle your worm..."
...in other words, ‘Length matters’ at Bay Hill !

RIP - ARNIE 25th Sept 2016 - he would have been 90 on the 10th Sept this year.

Back on 20th March in 2015 the OWGR #1 RORY McIlroy was having dinner with God, yes Arnold Palmer. It must have been an awesome and wonderful evening for wee Rory. The rest of us are in the Matthew 8:8 bracket. He’d never played Bay Hill in tournament competition and didn’t have the yardage book mapped perfectly just yet, but he’s a fast learner – ended up 11th that year, followed by 27th, 4th and a WIN last year. Good advice from God no doubt. Unfortunately, that dinner may not have been as inspiring as I first imagined - he was then a 4-time Major Champion - he still is !

OTHERS in my Matthew 8:8 category this week.....

The API from Bay Hill Club and Lodge – the home of two-time Champion Golfer of The Year and golfing legend Arnold Palmer - is one of 4 new events to join the OPEN Qualifying Series schedule this year. Three of those are on the PGA Tour, with the API making its debut along with the RBC Canadian Open and the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

There will be 3-places in the field at The 148th OPEN on offer - to the leading three players who finish in the T10 and ties – and are not already exempt.
In the event of a tie for a qualifying place, the player with the higher ranking in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) at the beginning of the week commencing 4 March will be awarded a place in The 148th Open.

Palmer, who won back-to-back Opens in 1961 and 1962, was highly credited for helping to revitalise the prestige of The OPEN after interest from American golfers had dwindled due to cost of travel. ‘The King’ came to Britain to play St Andrews in 1960 in a bid to achieve a modern version of Bobby Jones’ 1930 Grand Slam, having already won the first two majors of the year. He narrowly missed out by one stroke before being named Champion Golfer of The Year the following two years, encouraging other leading Americans to travel over in the process.

Outside of those already exempt for The OPEN, there are plenty of players looking for glory and a spot in the field at Royal Portrush.
One of the most notable is Northern Irishman - GMAC (500/1 on here), - will be all out gunning for a place on home soil and desperate in the next few weeks to secure his spot.

2013 Honda Champ Michael Thompson (Get On!) is not yet due to make the trip to Northern Ireland, but the 33-year-old is on a run of five straight T20s and could threaten the top of the leaderboard again this week (The OWGR #136 played with Rickie last Sunday for a T16 - was season-best T7 at the Genesis). Meanwhile, recent RSM winner and Golf forum fav Chucky 3 Sticks will be making his 19th consecutive appearance at Bay Hill, with seven yielding T25s, and the Augusta, Georgia native is also on a good run of form with six T20s in his last seven starts - bitofinterest Tongue Out Devil

it wont be worth watching.    Roe is probably the most knowledgeable pundit on earth and it's truly refreshing to hear
him describe how Rory should have played a tricky shot, even a not so tricky shot.
Our own Rich Beem is also in love with Woods so this tournament won't please him.

Stenson left me down badly for the FRL bet, but will be sticking around for the weekend at Arnie’s Place...the same can’t be said for his caddie.

THE Headline reads - "Stenson 'fires' his caddie after shooting 66 at Bay Hill" - Stenson improved by 11 shots Friday, carding a second-round, 6-under 66 to move to 1 under and avoid what would have been his 2nd MC in 11 career Palmer Invitationals. Henrik ranked second in the field in strokes gained: approach-the-green and fourth in strokes gained: putting. Stenson credits the improved iron play to a two-hour session Thursday night with instructor Pete Cowen. “I still have to fight a little bit out there, but my ball striking was certainly in a better way,” Stenson said. “I hope I can carry on some momentum here because we got a lot of big events coming up.”

Stenson’s fill-in caddie, buddy Marcus Larsson, handed in his bib Friday evening, he wasn’t getting it back. “Unfortunately, he’s getting fired,” Stenson said.
Stenson had a pre-tournament plan in place to use Larsson for the first 36 holes, and then sub in his former caddie Fanny Sunesson, who retired from Stenson’s bag in 2012, for the weekend. “She thought she was going to have the weekend off, potentially,” Stenson said, “and now she’s like, ‘Oh, I’m going to work!’”

Larsson, who has subbed in on Stenson's bag before, won’t be out of a job for long. He’ll caddie for Stenson next week at The Players after looping for Stenson’s 9-year-old son Karl in a US Kids Golf event this weekend. “That’s more important to me,” Stenson said. “But don’t worry, he’ll get another chance next week.” Hopefully, my 'good fanny story' has a happy ending BlushDevil

“Golf is so fickle - You’re never far away from producing golf like what I did today,” McIlroy said. “But on the flip side, I don’t think you’re ever far away from producing mediocre golf as well.
