BMW South Africa Open 2017

South Africa’s oldest and most prestigious golf tournament from Glendower Golf Club - a classic tree-lined parkland golf course in Ekurhuleni, which is hosting the tournament for the seventh time since 1989.

https://www.glendower.co.za/

For course-horse form one should include the SA Open - the Johannesburg venue hosted the 2014, 2015 and 2016 events & BMG Classic on the Sunshine Tour 2009-2014.

Not often will you RORY, Faldo and Darren Clark in the same ‘ball park’!!!

Also Ernie ‘The Big Easy’ Els - player-host this week, and defending champion Brandon Stone are in a field made up of an equal number of professionals from the European Tour and Sunshine Tour.
Yet none of SA own elite players.....Schwartzel/Oosthuizen/Grace

Mighty Whites 2008 • January 4, 2016 7:53 PM GMT Surprised Charl isn't playing in this. Must have finally given up on ever winning this after last years collapse (where Andy Sullivan won in a dramatic play-off against Charl to claim victory).
Llamedos • January 5, 2016 6:41 AM GMT For you info Mighty Whites - Charl Schwartzel will miss out on next week's South African Open while he recovers from a very serious stomach virus.
This year it’s his knee.....@CA_Schwartzel Jan 5 2017 Good luck to all @SBSChampionship in Hawaii would have loved to be there, but a slight knee injury needs more rehab and rest.

Those we fancy & in good form.....

Rory McIlroy 5/2 WINS - the rest nowhere / Brandon Stone / Richard Sterne / Jaco Van Zyl / Dylan Frittelli/ RES: Christiaan Bezuidenhout

Others Jbe' Kruger / Thomas Aiken / Andy Sullivan. Devil

Found why CHARL is not playing..... Laugh

Wazman • January 11, 2015 2:46 PM GMT
Well played Charl - saw it out like a true Masters champion.
hornetsman • January 11, 2015 2:46 PM GMT
WOW! I am not much of a Golf fan but I have never seen anything like that! Is that a regular Golf finish? Schwartzel is a former Major Champion or am I mixing him up with someone else?
Westender • January 11, 2015 2:53 PM GMT
Sky were singing Charl's praises all day and their fat lady was singing loudly at the turn.
Complete choke today

Just Google'd him and Schwartzel won the 2011 Masters at Augusta! WOW....that makes the last hour even more unbelievable? Currently ranked No 31 in the World! LOL!
bobweenit • January 11, 2015 3:00 PM GMT
He blew the lead here 2 years ago with a triple on the back 9. Got some baggage with the gaff. There were plenty of signs of him blowing it and form

just sat and watched that last hour of that Golf again. Crazy shot selection from Schwartzel, I imagine will take him a while to get over that!
Benjy • January 11, 2015 5:38 PM GMT I can't believe he's lost that How short did he go?
hornetsman • January 11, 2015 7:08 PM GMT
He was 1.01, he was 4 shots clear with 5 holes left and had putts for birdies. I am not a Golf expert but he only hit 3 fairways out of 18.....which probably tells you all you need to know!

If you had 2 grand, why would you try to invest this nice sum against a field of over 120 decent golfers at odds of 5/2. This might be a tournament to watch and enjoy unless you wish to punt an outsider for small stakes.5/2 is a bookies price imho.

RORY expressed that he was keen on playing in the desert this week, where he has finished runner-up four times. “I am going for a scan tomorrow. I fly to Dubai tonight and then will go for an MRI tomorrow just to see what’s up with this joint in my back.

“It was manageable this week with tape and a few pills, so I am fine, but first and foremost I have to get fully fit and healthy again and hopefully I’ll be all right to play next week. Obviously that [pulling out] is worst case scenario,” said McIlroy Sunday, adding he will see what happens after that.

“But like I said, it is manageable with the tape and a few anti-inflammatories but it’s not 100 per cent. Part of me really wants to make this week because there is so much to play for but at the same time there is so much to play for over the whole season and I don’t want to jeopardise long-term goals for short-term gain, but hopefully I’ll be good to go.”

How this affects McIlroy’s Masters preparations remains to be seen. He was scheduled to play even more than usual leading into the year’s first major, including stops at the Dubai Desert Classic, Genesis Open, Honda Classic, WGC-Mexico Championship and WGC-Match Play. Last year he also played the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
