The 2016 Emirates Australian Open is the first event in The OPEN Qualifying Series and three players (who finished in the top ten and ties who were not already exempt) will earn places in The 146th OPEN at Royal Birkdale 20th-23rd July 2017.

The Australian trio of Matt Jones, Rod Pampling and Nick Cullen qualified for the 145TH OPEN at The Australian GC. Sydney-born Jones, who is a member of The Australian GC qualified in style by winning the Aussie Open, finishing on an eight-under-par total of 276 for the championship, one shot ahead of stars Adam Scott and Jordan Spieth. Pampling finished a shot further back on six-under-par, three ahead of Cullen who tied on three-under-par with fellow Australian Lincoln Tighe but secured the qualifying place thanks to his higher position in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Play is just under way at this years Australian Open from Royal Sydney (RSGC) - host to its 15th Australian Open, and most recently in 2013 won by Rory McIlroy.

Its here again, the greatest sporting event in the world! The silence, the roar, the wind, the rain, the sun and the pain!
Team eventually fully loaded for tomorrow, just hope its not like last year which nothing to do with betting was just simply the worst Open in my living history! Nobody's fault just the draw left two players to fight it out, they both played great but the Open inst about 2 players fighting it out!

Anyway the team, all matched to win a serious amount of money, more so my long shot which buys the new Land Rover Discovery next Monday morning!

Rory McIlroy - crazy you say, maybe! He has been humiliated lately, but a player this good on home soil pretty much, past champion, its really down to holing a long putt early on before he slips into the lazy mistakes and off he will go, could win by ten!

Jason Day - Almost exactly the same story as Rory!

Paul Casey - Wish I had a pound for the times I have said never again with this man. Arrogant, pompous and just not likeable. But has he got some game, problem is even if he is 5 clear going into the back nine on Sunday he would probably do something pathetic, still I couldn't take him off the list, he is just so good!

Alex Noren - Classy, gritty, hits the front, will stay there!

Shane Lowry - Got all the game, temperament sound, length great, touch great, scrambling great, little out of form of late sadly but could have won the Irish so a good sign.

Matthew Fitzpatrick - Just gets better and better all the time, may be a hint early for him, could be the time for him to breakthrough!

Adam Hadwin - 550.0 Never! Am I the only one who thinks he has a very good chance? Will think of him every time I fire up the new discovery!

Summary
Zach shoots four under 66 while RORY RORS and Chan KIM are next best with 68's (only 8 under par round today).

WHO's Chan KIM (USA)... The Arizona-based Korean-American had a week he will never forget in May.
It began with him coming through a sectional qualifier for the US Open, then ended with him lifting his first Japan Golf Tour title and with it claiming a spot at Royal Birkdale. He stormed to a five-stroke success at the Gateway to The Open Mizuno Open, part of The Open Qualifying Series which offers four places in golf’s most international major championship. “To play in The Open has been one of my biggest dreams,” said Kim, who went into the event ranked 561st in the world. “Just to see all the history there I’m extremely excited and honoured. From what I’ve seen on TV I can expect a lot of wind, a lot of rain and really difficult conditions. It will be tough, but I am really looking forward to it.”

He was the winner of the 2013 Asian Tour qualifying school and in his rookie season was runner-up to Thaworn Wiratchant in the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship. Having gained a card for the Japanese circuit his best finish there last year was a tie for eighth, but his runaway victory this spring certainly put him on the map.
Report Catch Me ifyoucan July 21, 2017 11:04 PM BST
America's Chan Kim won the Mizuno Open by 5 shots posting 15 under par(at JFE Setonaikai Golf Club in Okayama, Japan) and also qualified for the 146th Open at Royal Birkdale.  He'll be joined by Michael Hendry (10 under par) of New Zealand, Australia's Adam Bland (-7) and KT Kim (-6) of Korea.

Chan is 500's with Laddies (300 generally) btw. Devil

1954: Peter Thomson began his run of three straight Open victories by capturing his first Claret Jug at Birkdale by one stroke over South African legend Bobby Locke. Thomson, then just 24 years old, became the first Australian to win The Open and the youngest champion since Bobby Jones. Peter twice won the Open at this year's venue. The Australian won the event five times in all.
Thomson and Tom Watson each won their fifth Open at Royal Birkdale. This is the 10th Open contested at Royal Birkdale in Southport, Lancashire. The last time Birkdale hosted the Open, in 2008, was the only time this century that nobody has finished under par - Padraig Harrington's winning score was three over.

Maybe one the most memorable Birkdale moments occurred during the Ryder Cup, not the Open Championship.
From 1959 until the 1969 matches, the United States had dominated the Ryder Cup. This streak included a 23.5 to 8.5 blowout in 1967. But at the 1969 matches, Great Britain had its best chance to take back the trophy. The final match between Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin came down to the final hole. Before Jacklin could strike a match-halving putt, Nicklaus picked up his competitor’s marker and said “I don’t think you would have missed it, but I wasn’t going to give you the chance, either.”
The Concession” as it would later be known, halved the Ryder Cup. Since the United States won the previous Cup, they retained the trophy; they kept it for another sixteen years, until 1985.

Three generations of the Hawtree family of golf course architects have worked on the course. Frederick G. Hawtree and champion golfer J.H. Taylor are the two people most responsible for the current routing, following the valleys between the very large dunes which dominate the property. The arrangement makes for excellent spectator conditions during major events. Frederick W. Hawtree, the son of Frederick G, performed some modifications in the 1960s and in 1993 Martin Hawtree, son of Frederick W., improved and modernised the layout further, with all 18 of the club's greens being completely rebuilt, to improve turf and drainage following the 1991 Open Championship.

The list of Open winners at Birkdale is a who’s who of Hall of Famers (HOF) and multiple Major winners. Take a look:
1954: Peter Thomson (World Golf Hall of Fame, five-time Open Championship winner)
1961: Arnold Palmer (World Golf Hall of Fame, seven-time major champion)
1965: Peter Thomson again
1971: Lee Trevino (World Golf Hall of Fame, six-time major champion)
1976: Johnny Miller (World Golf Hall of Fame, two-time major champion)
1983: Tom Watson (World Golf Hall of Fame, eight-time major champion)
1991: Ian Baker-Finch (then one of the top two or three players in the world)
1998: Mark O’Meara (World Golf Hall of Fame, two-time major champion)
2008: Padraig Harrington (three-time major champion, soon-to-be HOFer)
The Open has had its fair share of out-of-nowhere winners — those random guys that come from deep down the world rankings, win a major, and then aren't really heard from much again. But not Birkdale, it's a HOF proving ground.
History awaits.

Li shot another 63 in an OPEN Championship - remember last year at Troon when first Phil and then Stenson shot a 63 to win.

Did Zach wait back to congratulate SPIETH this year ???

I don't give many chances for forumites to wind me, but I was on Kuchar @ 79/1 (80 on here). A friend booked me a birthday surprise, which turned out to be a 3 hour Andre Rieu film.  Battery on mobile was almost flat, 4%. Checked Kucjar's price at ten past four, laid a bit more at 5.1.  Someone has just told me that Speith was about 40/1 on the 13th.  I'm already suicidal due to problems with DVLA losing my licence, and being unable to drive.  10/1 I could about take, any bigger it's very large brandy time.SadSadCryCry

I'll just ad that I did back Alfie Plant at 9/2 and 5/1, with WH, 365 and PP. So it wasn't all bad.CoolCool

AND SO IT BEGINS ALL OVER AGAIN.....the road to The 147th Open at Carnoustie ! even if some people (incl saxon farm) 'detest these worldwide qualifying spots'.

...the first of 15 events in ten countries that will make up The OPEN Qualifying Series for 2018.

I'm expecting another AUSSIE TRIO to qualify for The OPEN at The Emirates Australian Open this Sunday.
But perhaps Jonas Blixt 28/1 might make the frame ? Devil
