As the TOUR prepares for the fifth (of seven) tournaments this season, prior to taking a seven-week break for the holidays, we head to Las Vegas, Nevada for the 34th SHRINERS Hospitals for Children OPEN, at the par-71 TPC Summerlin, the sole venue for the last eight years and consistently one of the easiest tracks TOUR. Due to altitude, the course does not play to the full 7,255 yards. Birdie fest in store where a 59 might show up (btw Jim Furyk won this twice) with the winning score likely to be over around -20 mark.

Smylie Kaufman is the defending champion, coming from SEVEN strokes back in the final round with a 10-under 61 to beat fellow rookie Kizzire and five other players by a shot (Cameron Tringale, Jason Bohn, Alex Cejka, Kevin Na and 54-hole leader Brett Stegmaier- also a rookie).

TIGER’s first Tour win was at this tournament all of 20 years ago and rookies and first time winners have been commonplace ever since. Past major winners GMAC, Ernie Els and Keegan Bradley feature in the entries along with Davis Love & Vijay Singh against this thin field where an admin error means a field of 144 will go to post rather than the scheduled 132.

Alex Cejka, Charley Hoffman, Ryan Moore, Kevin Na, Scott Piercy and Cameron Tringale all have residences in the area. Butch Harmon / Claude Harmon III are also based locally, hence the entries for Jimmy Walker and Nick Watney plus Lucas Glover, Brookes Koepka, Graeme McDowell and Kyle Stanley who work with Harmon III in Florida.

KOEPKA basically threw this tourney away, shouldve won a gap, reminds me very much of many other US players, just goes for everything even when makes no sense at all.Pampling some clutch putting and a Glover choke got it done...
Report therhino November 7, 2016 6:40 AM GMT
Koepka hates trophies. Blown numerous chances now both in Europe and on the main stage. Immense talent no doubt but a disaster when in contention.

Given most punters would have backed koepka (and hardly anyone on pampling) is there any reason to post this?

your constant domination of these golf threads is getting tedious in the extreme.

I think Koepka is a huge talent so I wouldn't give up on him. He didn't have his best stuff but still contended. He reminds me of Dusty bin, huge talent but sometimes struggles to finish off. Can see him being a top five player in the future and contending in Majors regularly.
Report Total Bosman November 8, 2016 4:05 PM GMT
Other than maybe Rory hard to think of a sloppier golfer than Koepka, guy throws shots away like confetti.  Should have won that one at a canter.  Will win some on talent alone but needs to tighten up the focus to reach the very top.
Report Mighty Whites 2008 November 8, 2016 5:40 PM GMT
Not convinced by Brooks at crunch time. This wasn't the first time he has blown an event he could have won.

Pampling was overpriced all sunday for me he was aeround 20 when one behind early doors. On Sunday he played well and crucially holed the putts when it mattered. Glover is great tee to green but once again his putting cost him.

anyway patrick cantlay screwed up the 18th in strong winds when the final group was beckoning. course almost unplayable now. a par there and he would have gone into the final round as favourite, seems I'm attracted to backing bottlers, eddie pepperell in the euros as well Cry

shows really why tiger was so great in his prime he'd almost always close out winning positions.

These players will be called chokers and they have choked, but it's easier to do that than it is to close it out it would seem. Even the supposedly mentally tough spieth has showed a lot of frailty in the last few years for example.
