IRISH OPEN 2016

A welcome return to European soil featuring 15 of the World's T60 players, most have jetted in from TPC Sawgrass - remember T60 cut for the US OPEN in four weeks time.

Rory ‘Foundation’ McIlroy again plays host at the K Club - RORS not playing 3 weeks in a row so will miss the BMW next week at Wentworth.

McIlroy fav 4/1 - Irish Open form MC/MC/MC + Danny ‘Masters Champ’ Willett back in Europe for the first time since and must be ready to get back to the day job + Russell ‘Three Balls’ Knox (sank three on 17 last week) + Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Shane Lowry, Andy Sullivan & Lee Westwood - twice a winner on this track - all add up to a quality field.

The Irish Open venue this year is the Palmer Course at the K Club - first time host for Ms Sharon Smurfit. The parkland track 7,350 yds, par 72, ‘bout 30km from Dublin was designed by Arnie and opened in 1991. Host to the 2006 Ryder Cup where Woosie's team easily won. Venue for the European Open from 1995 to 2003 and again in 2005.
A strong driving course with water lurking on most holes, undulating fairways and long Poa-Annua greens will be set up well for the more accurate types off the tee.

Welcome to sunny Ireland - well not this week - typically Irish conditions with persistent rain forecast at times during all four days. Players with an early tee time on Thursday might have a tiny advantage. You going to the K-club then mate - NO TANKS!

Previous Winners.....
2015: Soren Kjeldsen, 150/1;
2014: Mikko Ilonen, 80/1;
2013: Paul Casey, 50/1;
2012: Jamie Donaldson, 66/1;
2011: Simon Dyson, 25/1;
2010: Ross Fisher, 20/1.

Tomorrow
This band of rain will extend eastwards across Ireland tomorrow morning followed by sunny spells and just well scattered showers. From RTE

Thursday
Highest temperatures of 13 to 18 degrees Celsius. Fresh southerly winds will veer west to southwest by afternoon.
3 Day Outlook
Unsettled conditions will persist for Friday and the weekend, but because of the uncertainty in the development and tracks of the low pressure systems on the Atlantic, details for the weekend are uncertain at this moment.

On Thursday night, showers will become isolated and most places will become dry with clear spells.

Friday may start mainly dry and bright, but rain will spread from the southwest to affect all areas during Friday afternoon or evening. The rain will be heavy locally and will be accompanied by freshening southerly winds.

Late early could be the option !

Even later at 2.15pm is 'cool customer' Lucas Bjerregaard 100/1 taken - was Plus 5 as an Amateur while the Dane's best career finish is second to Rose in the 2015 UBS Hong Kong Open. 24yo Lucas is #124 OWGR and 53rd in RtoD. The 'weight-lifter' comes here fresh off a T3 in the Volvo China Open three weeks ago so lifting the trophy on Sunday should come handy. 66/1 FRL too with Poor Pads. Devil

CMIYC I wasnt calling you a bellend.

It was clearly Canaletto. I dont understand why he would start comparing Sullivan and Rory. One was 4/1 at the off. The other was 50/1. Why would any sane person ever compare them as like for like. I mean fair play to Rory he has 4 wins to Sullivans 3 wins since start of 2015. Sullivan just seems like a nice guy yet is getting blasted for some inexplicable reason. So Sullivan losing down the stretch to Willett makes him an embarrassment having shot a final rd 68. Interesting.

LAHINCH GOLF CLUB tweeted - Honoured, delighted & privileged to host DDF Irish Open in 2019 which promises to be a special year for Irish Links Golf.

Lahinch Golf Club 4th to 7th July 2019.

The tournament enters a new era next year when Paul McGinley leads a rotation of Irish golfing legends - Major champions Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell – in the hosting role, taking over the mantle from Rory McIlroy. The four-time Major champion’s charity, the Rory Foundation, has successfully hosted the tournament since 2015.

The winning 2014 Ryder Cup Captain will host at a venue for which he holds a great affinity, having triumphed at Lahinch as an amateur when he claimed the South of Ireland Championship in 1991. Darren won it in 1989 and Gmac triumphed in 2000. Padraig was beaten in the finals of both the South of Ireland (and Irish Close Championships) by David Higgins in 1994 (18th hole and 20th hole) and by Jody Fanagan in 1995 (18th hole) but he did win the Irish Close in Lahinch two weeks later.

Paul will be aided in his preparations for the 2019 event by his close friend and one of his Vice-Captains during The 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, Des Smyth, who was recently announced as Tournament Ambassador, a role which will see him help in the marketing and promotion of the event for the next four years as well as aid a successful transition between each of the hosts.
