A VERY ‘VALERO’ VELCOME to the TEXAS OPEN (VTO) from the host venue for the last six years. http://www.tpc.com/sanantonio

The third-longest running non major event on TOUR that first began back in 1922..... behind only the BMW Championship (1899) & Canadian Open (1904)..... where since ‘22 there have only been 9 non US winners.

So dig out those Lucchese boots once again, as we remember the Alamo and Waco, and leave all those Honky Tonks to 1000/1 shots Robert Allenby et al, as we spend this next week in his Lone Star State (of mind). The winner this week by the way does not get another ‘nice Jacket’, but receives a VTO logo pair of those Lucchese cowboy boots.

This OPEN is played on the AT&T Oaks Course featuring narrow fairways with some bunkers 12 feet deep and native bush yielding unplayable lies. The par 5's are tough to birdie, the shortest being 565yds with these greens having some very distinct slopes and multi-tiered pin positions and even a bunker in the middle of one of the green ffs - what planet was Greg Norman living on back in 2009 - the ‘Shark’ did the same in his design of Doonbeg GC, but without the help of Sergio Garcia’s design input that he had here.
Trump is still ripping up his Doonbeg course as we speak. He had plenty of help the last two winters with severe storms washing away a few holes.

The 4th most difficult non-major course on TOUR in 2012 and the hardest par 72 on TOUR in 2011. Also the highest one-putt percentage course on TOUR in 2014 - it certainly is not usually a birdie fest. Hole #2 may be the toughest with the 14th likely the easiest on the course this week. The 7,435yds Oaks Course should find its place, rightfully so, among the toughest on TOUR again this year but the first two days should have an asterisk attached because of the weather conditions.

The weather especially in Texas is always worth considering. The present forecast is HORRENDOUS with Flash Flood Watch alerts in effect through Tuesday morning. Forget practice rounds !
http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/san-antonio-tx/78205/daily-weather-forecast/351198
IF you didn’t understand what 'luck of the draw' meant before this week in 2015, well, we were treated to a harsh lesson on the Thursday and Friday. Winds blowing 25 mph and gusting in the 40mph range made play almost impossible Thursday morning. The field averaged 78.61 in the morning wave and 74.86 in the afternoon. The morning wave on Friday went out in 73.10 and the afternoon was 71.58 so while it wasn’t a picnic either day, Late Thursday-Early Friday was around three shots on average easier than Early Thursday-Late Friday.

After three years of being played BEFORE the Masters, the Valero shifts back into its late April berth and hence receives a lesser quality entry to the field this week. The OWGR Top 10 are otherwise engaged this week with 6/1 Bubba Chinese fav the only player to make a public appearance.
OWGR Branden Grace #11 & Patrick Reed #13 (first trip since 2013 when he MC) head up the rankings that features 9 of the T30 (11 of the T50) OWGR players. Fellow Texan and San Antonio resident #26 Jimmy Walker 16/1 will seek to become the third man this century to win back-to-back VTO titles, joining 250/1 Justin Leonard (2000-01) and 22/1 Zach Johnson #17 (2008-09) in the field this week.
Recent winner Brandt Snedeker #16 is the third highest ranked in the field this week. Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson (still looking for his first top-25 here) and Ernie Els were late additions to the field.  Charley Hoffman has nine T15 finishes in his previous 10 visits, including a 2nd in 2011. Berger #45 and Horschel #47 are the only other two inside the Top 50 here this week. All aboard for the Grace 16/1 (6places), Bubba 6/1 double !
Adam ‘Texas Slam’ Scott is not in the field this year and likewise Kevin Na gives it a skip after he famously recorded a ‘16’ at the par-4 ninth hole after struggling to free himself from rocks and underbrush – guess 5yo memories must still be fresh in his state of mind.

Recent VTO winners:
2015 - Jimmy Walker (-11) from Spieth -7 from Horschel -4.
2014 - Steven Bowditch (-8)
2013 - Martin Laird (-14)
2012 - Ben Curtis (-9)
2011 - Brendan Steele (-8)
2010 - Adam Scott (-14)

Prior to the start of the event, Kevin Na has withdrawn, giving first alternate Willy Wilcox a spot in the field.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, Curtis Luck is set to turn Pro, making his debut at the Valero
The amateur tag of the World No.1 Ranked Amateur is gone from his name as he readies for his professional debut this week. The 20-year-old Aussie has already made a bucketful of starts worldwide on various professional circuits, but he's maintained his amateur status until now. LUCK was holding onto the amateur status in order to play in the 81st Masters where he finished T46 at Augusta National, although he missed out on low amateur honours. By turning pro, he will also lose out on exemptions he had to play in the US Open and OPEN Championship, but I think he's ready to start earning some dollars. Curtis will be reliant on sponsor's invites and/or Monday qualifiers while he attempts to play his way onto the TOUR as he has no status yet to his credit. Aussie's go well in Texas ! Devil

We’re in a LONE STAR STATE of mind this week at the TPC San Antonio’s AT&T Oaks Course which tops out at 7,435 yards. So long-hitters will do well, but putting will also be key, on this course’s large, challenging greens. And like we’ve seen before at this event, weather can be a big factor and the wind even more so. (Remember 2015?) This year’s forecast does, however, look good.

A particularly weak field as this is a natural break between the Masters and the build up for THE PLAYERS. Some comments on the cream as it rises to the top - players to watch out for at this week’s Texas Open.....

1. Matt Kuchar: Hasn’t missed a cut at TPC San Antonio 5-for-5 with three T15 finishes in five starts since 2012 (T4 in 2014) at this venue. Was T-4 in 2014. He’s teasing Johnnycocknbullsh1te every Sunday night with back door finishes right now.  Stole a top 10 with a hot final round at the Masters and went low in the final round again with a strong finish at Harbour Town, and enters this week coming off finishes of T-4 and T-11 in those two events, respectively.
2. Branden Grace: Love his game on this course. Improving dramatically in each start at TPC San Antonio as he has gone T79 in 2014 & T30, T9 the last two years. T-11 in Harbour Town further proves that his slump is over.
3. Billy Horsh1te: Feels comfortable here with three top-4 finishes in last four trips. Performed well on the Florida Swing while MC at Harbour Town, but remember his wife gave birth to their second child last Tuesday, and you can’t argue he’s a course horse in San Antonio
4. Brooks Koepka: MC last year after T-36 in Valero debut in 2014, but his length is an asset here. Enters this week coming off a T-11 at the Masters and a Round-of-16 appearance at the Match Play.
5. Kevin Chappell: After underperforming for most of the season, Chappell struck proverbial gold with a T7 at the Masters - his best finish of the season. Good timing to heat up, as he tied for fourth here last year after a T2 in 2011. Still looking for his first PGA TOUR win, and this would be as good of an opportunity as any. Kevin has made four of six cuts in this event.

6. Brendan Steele: 2011 Texas Open Champion, his first PGA TOUR, he has two other top 10s here, plus a T13 last year. This has been a big year already for Steele, winning in the 2016 portion of the schedule. Has yet to miss a cut this season and is coming off a T-27 at Augusta.
7. Ryan Palmer: Seems to have really figured out TPC San Antonio and fits the prototype of a Texas golfer. Plays well in wind and in the Lone Star State with finishes of T4, T6 the last two years here. Has three top 10s and has missed just one cut in seven Valero starts since 2010. Game is coming around, too, as he was T-11 at Harbour Town.
8. Daniel Summerhays: His last four starts here look like this – T7, T2, T4, T13 (last year). Made cuts at Masters and RBC Heritage. Proves the Texas Open is not just a bombers ballpark.
9. Ryan Moore: Offers both class and steady current form, T-8 in 2012 is his only start here other than 2005. Played nicely at Masters with a T-9.
10.(just) Zach Johnson: Won this event in the two years right before it moved from La Cantera to TPC San Antonio. T-6, T-20, T-29 (2016) the last three years here. Hasn’t had his best season but seemed to be gaining some momentum before MC at Masters. His world ranking has slipped to the lowest it’s been since the week of his 2007 Masters win (56th). Not dead yet but he’s certainly on borrowed time.

11. Ollie Schniederjans: This youngster was in position to nab his breakthrough win last week in Harbour Town, but his game is probably better suited for TPC San Antonio. This is the kind of field that is conducive to first-time winners, so perhaps this is the week.
12. Soren Kjeldsen: Bombers do well here but so do guys with deft short games. Kjeldsen falls into the latter category. First-timer here, but T-36 at Masters was his worst start in last four worldwide starts.
13. Adam Hadwin: Missed cut in 2015, his only Texas Open start. But he’s a different player now. Has a win and no finishes worse than T-39 in his last seven Tour starts.
14. Luke Donald: T13 in Valero debut last year and is coming off a runner-up finish at Harbour Town, arguably his best course on Tour. A very similar effort last season – was it a fluke or a future trend.
15. Tony Finau: T-68 in only Valero start, in 2015, but has the length to compete here. Well rested as he hasn’t played since T-34 in Houston.

16. Ben An: First visit to TPC San Antonio, but his game fits this course. T-33 at Masters and still hasn’t missed a cut since he was disqualified from last year’s Italian Open.
17. JJ Spaun: T6 in Hilton Head came after his fourth straight cut made.
18. Jhonattan Vegas: Not great record here – T68, MC the last two years – but one would think his length will be a nice asset. Had four top 17s in five starts before MC at Augusta.
19. Paddy Reed: Game fits this course well and he proved it with his runner-up finish in his Valero debut last year. Highest-ranked player in this year’s field, but also coming off two straight MC’s. Hasn’t had a top 10 since Kapalua. Reed is another native son, like Jimmy Walker, but to be frank the only reason he get a mention is a runner-up finish here last year.
20. Martin Laird: Past champion (2013) has made three of his four cuts at the AT&T Oaks Course which also includes T9 in 2011. He’s a veteran that is known for hitting a lot of greens when hot. © CMiyc

GIVE JIMMY A SKIP this week as Walker has announced he's been dealing with Lyme disease since last November, but still plans to give it a go this week.
Walker previously come out before the Masters to declare he was fighting mononucleosis but he's since been diagnosed with Lyme disease instead. Like mono, Lyme disease causes extreme fatigue and in today's press conference, Walker compared it to having the flu constantly. The Texan has been wrestling with this since Thanksgiving, so this is nothing new, except now he can develop a plan of attack in order to fight the disease. Despite the illness, Walker posted a T18 at the 81st Masters just two weeks ago. While the 2015 Valero Champion is playing in a home game this week, the illness does make him a dodgy option for future weeks.

My top pick this week is OWGR #103 Tour Rookie JJ Spaun.
JJ closed last week with a bogey-free 2-under-par 35-34=69 to conclude his debut at Hilton Head on 10-under 274, for a T6 finish only three back. His effort was one of only two blemish-free laps in R4 (+ Sung Kang, 68). Spaun kicked off with 67-72-66 - the 26-year-old SDSU alum began Sunday in a four-way T9, five in arrears. That was his 16th start of the season, fifth top 25 and third top 10, just shy of a season and career-best T4 at the Phoenix Open. Bryan was the third rookie to win this season in 23 events, joining Cody Gribble (Sanderson Farms) and Mackenzie Hughes (The RSM Classic). COME ON 66/1 shot JJ.

Catch Me ifyoucan  • October 25, 2016 10:58 PM BST Finally watch out for J.J. SPAUN – JJ was the 2015 PGA Mackenzie Tour Order of Merit winner (formerly the PGA Tour Canada) and the 26-year-old has been nominated for the 2016 Player of the Year award along with Grayson Murray & Wesley Bryan the Web.com Tour where he ended up third on the money list. Spaun, from Los Angeles, notched seven top-10 finishes this year, including a playoff loss at the Air Capital Classic presented by Aetna in late June. Until late August, he was the highest-ranked player on the money list without a victory before he finally broke through and won the News Sentinel Open presented by Pilot. JJ also received a special exemption into the Northern Trust Open in his hometown earlier this season.

Two others that deserve a mention are...

Luke List who has been playing well all year but did miss the cut last week at the Heritage. That MC shouldn’t bother us though as his previous 12 rounds on Tour were all 72 or below which is the consistency that will be needed to contend this week. LIST is one of the longest hitters on Tour (3rd in distance and 182nd in accuracy) and 3rd in Par 5 scoring. With most of the par 5’s being extremely long (~600 yards), List is one of the few players who can get home in two which will be an advantage. He also is near the top in regards to bogey avoidance which will also be key this week and also is 11th in birdie percentage.

Since many of the top players have skipped this event, a longshot pick may prove to be Ryan Brehm (14/1 for top 20 finish - 40's T10 - 500/1 winner dream on StanJ). Brehm is comparable to Luke List. He is 9th on Tour in driving distance (long-shot, get it !) yet 197th in driving accuracy. This course is a bit different than most PGA Tour courses in that it requires more mid to long irons and less wedges. That will help Brehm in comparison to the field as his average rank from 150-200 yards is 50th, meanwhile his average rank from 50-150 yards is 156th. If Brehm can catch a hot putter, he might surprise some and contend for a Top 10 finish since he can reach all the par 5s and will not have to rely on as many wedges as he does in other events. Devil

FOUND this interesting topic - Talk about pre-cut versus post-cut performance. Let's take a look at this week's field to see who thrives before the cut, and who finishes strong.

Pre-Cut Stars
For this experiment, I'm going to look at performance before the cut since the start of last season and compare it to performance after the cut. I will point out a few examples that look notable to me. The idea is that some golfers are prone to fast starts, but start to fade as the week goes on. That could be due to added pressure or it could be due to typical weekend course setups with pin placements, firmer greens, and what not.

Scott Piercy: Ranks 7th in the field for PRE-CUT performance but just 79th in POST-CUT performance.
Martin Laird: Ranks 5th in the field for PRE-CUT performance but way down at 48th in POST-CUT performance.
Seamus Power: Ranks 20th in the field for PRE-CUT performance but just 117th in POST-CUT performance.
Anirban Lahiri: Ranks 22nd in the field for PRE-CUT performance but just 91st in POST-CUT performance.

Seamus Power doesn't have many starts on his PGA TOUR resume but he's positioned himself inside the top 25 six times after R1 this season. More recently, Harold Varner III has been T13 or better after R1 in each of his last four starts. Another fast starter is Luke List who has been T21 or better after two rounds 12 times already this season.

Post-Cut Stars
On the flip side, here are some golfers that really shine on the weekend but don't always fire out of the gates.

Branden Grace: Ranks 1st in the field for POST-CUT performance but just 71st in PRE-CUT performance.
Jimmy Walker: Ranks 3rd in the field for POST-CUT performance but just 52nd in PRE-CUT performance.
Graeme McDowell: Ranks 4th in the field for POST-CUT performance but just 96th in PRE-CUT performance.
John Peterson: Ranks 11th in the field for POST-CUT performance but just 114th in PRE-CUT performance.

Because the cutoff for the top 50 in the world to be eligible for next month's Players Championship falls on May 1, this week's tournament in Texas is the last chance to qualify for those on the PGA Tour.
Report Catch Me ifyoucan April 20, 2017 3:45 PM BST
Those competing at the European Tour events being played in China this week and next would also have the opportunity to move into the top 50 and make it into the field for the Players, May 11-14.

Personally i like his course, open and exposed to the elements..............not your typical PGA TOUR course, pristine with perfect rough.............

Gonna have a nibble on C PETTERSSON today, leaders look decidedly dodgy..................
Report therhino April 23, 2017 10:28 AM BST
I'm with Charwell. Horrible course and location. One saving grace is the short par 4/par 5 combo to finish. They really should put the tees up on 18 and make it reachable though, too often becomes a dull 3 shotter.

Fancy Branden from here.

Can't actually think of a course I dislike more on the pga tour. Maybe Dallas, tough call between those two. Texas can do better.
Report Total Bosman April 23, 2017 3:56 PM BST
Think it's routinely voted the worst course on tour by the pros.  The weird thing is with 4 par 5s and 2 potentially drivable par 4s it should be made for excitement, but the golf produced usually ends up being quite dull.  Produced a nicely packed leaderboard though.

After 180 starts, Kevin_Chappell finally has his name on a PGA Tour trophy:
Most career runner-up finishes before 1st Tour win, last 5 seasons: Kevin Chappell 6 Kevin Kisner 4
Last to have more 2nd place finishes on Tour at time of 1st win than Kevin_Chappell (6) - Tim Clark, 2010 Players (8).Devil
