Report system99 January 13, 2016 8:19 PM GMT

THE JOBURG OPEN 2017 sees a change of date on the EURO TOUR Schedule to become the fourth event of the 2018 RtoD season, thus avoiding the rainy season in Johannesburg and swinging in the rain - the tournament was reduced to 54 holes after thunder & lightning caused course flooding 'last (golf) season' forcing play to be abandoned (back in February this year).

The ‘traditional’ hosts Royal J&K GC are busy upgrading their East course (opens in Jan ’18) so a NEW VENUE for this year as RANDPARK GOLF CLUB will hosts for the first time - playing on both its two distinctive 18 hole layouts known as the Bushwillow and Firethorn.
Firethorn is a true test of championship golf, with what is described as a ‘death or glory’ final three holes. The par 72 hosted the SA Open in 1995 and 2000 underwent green and aesthetical modifications in the early 1990s, with a further facelift at the turn of the millennium.
The easier/shorter Bushwillow was founded in the 1940’s and in ’52 underwent a complete overhaul. The picturesque course is fairly short from tee to green and very well protected by rows of large trees alongside all fairways, making for some tight and extremely challenging holes on the par 71.

Another tri-sanctioned tournament as the Asian Tour joins the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour in hosting the event (the penultimate event on the Asian Tour schedule).

Again it's the biggest annual professional golf event in Africa with one of the biggest fields of 240 players (but almost 100 of them are outside T1000 in OWGR).
Prize money of 1.3 million euros but also THREE places up for grabs at Carnoustie in July with former Champion Golfer of the Year Louis Oosthuizen heading the field.

Can we EXPECT A LOCAL WINNER in the 12th edition of this Open - 8 of the last 11 were SA and four of the five events in South Africa during the 2017 season were won by ‘home’ players. Justin Walters is sleeping in his own bed this week while Anthony MICHAEL & Ryan Tipping are members at Randpark GC. Devil

INDIA's red-hot Shubhankar Sharma leads by FIVE swings on 20under after a fine 7under 65 today (69,61,65).

The 21-year-old OWGR 462, is searching for a first Asian Tour win, fired 10 birdies at the Randpark Golf Club, par-71 Bushwillow course, to trail the leader Tapio Pulkkanen of Finland by one-shot after 36 holes. His second day 61 is also the lowest on the Asian Tour and his career’s best. He previously shot a 62 at the 2016 Resorts World Manila Masters.
Barely 17 when he turned pro and now ranked 22nd on the Asian Tour Order of Merit, Sharma has enjoyed a great season so far highlighted by four T10s and one T4 finish at the Bashundhara Bangladesh Open in February. A recent T10 in Hong Kong and T27 at last week's Mauritius Open, Sharma is now in the running to become the first Asian to win the Joburg Open.
He's played his last 36 holes in an eye-popping 17-under !

A win in the Joburg Open would not only get him a European Tour card but also a place in next year’s OPEN Championship, which would be a Major debut for the youngster.
“Every golfer dreams of playing in the OPEN, but I don’t want to think too much about that, just to win would be the biggest thing and everything else would be a bonus. Playing in Europe is also always on my mind because of the Rolex Series events and all the world ranking points on offer, and I tried to get on through European Qualifying School. So it would be great to play on that tour and a win here would change my life, but we’re not there yet,” a composed Shubhankar said.

The chasing pack is led by Swedish Q-school grad Christofer Blomstrand (fired two eagles in a sizzling third-round 10-under-par 29-33=62 on his 10th European Tour start), with James Morrison and Erik Van Rooyen a further stroke back on 14-under. England's Marcus Armitage and Tapio Pulkkanen, the tall, hat-wearing Finn, who graduated as the number one ranked player from the 2017 Challenge Tour, are tied fifth.

Asia's Order of Merit leader Gavin Green of Malaysia safely made the cut by shooting a 67 at Bushwillow. He is tied in 27th place and is on track to become the Asian Tour’s number one golfer in 2017. The top three players (excluding already exempt FRITTELLI) will earn a place at The OPEN in 2018. Devil
