Happy to follow a couple of players who went well last week.

Jimmy Walker - pretty obvious pick, but his record here, coupled with his showing last week make him a must bet for me at 14/1

Brandt Snedeker - Another who showed really well last week and was actually really surprised to see he is 25/1 ew first six places.

Considering the height / distance disadvantage he has this Blair is some player.  Won't contend on every track but putting the way he does definitely one to watch.

well had to try salvage this with a punt on kid Si Woo Kim ,considering sneds albeit a talent hasn't been prolific in the last 2 years, blair maybe plenty to come but simply has never won bar team events, kisner have him onside but only stake back but is the most likely imo.
16/1 seems very fair, not a flash in the pan, he's been top 25 in 3 of his 5 starts this year, and seems to have that winning mentality with the web last year and a really smart ametuer career.

make or break, filling me boots at 16/1

There are 25 rookies on the PGA TOUR in 2016-17.

My man Cody Gribble embodied the land of extremes en route to the best-ever finish for a rookie at the SBS Tournament of Champions. The lefty shared 14th place at 12-under 280, 10 strokes adrift of champion Justin Thomas - that's pretty good first time out. Gribble led the field of 32 in both strokes gained: putting and fewest putts. He also co-led in par-5 scoring at Kapalua. However, he tied for second-to-last in greens in regulation and ranked last in proximity to the hole.
Of the five rookies who have appeared in the history of the tournament, Gribble’s three-way T14 was one better than Smylie Kaufman’s three-way T15 last year, although Kaufman still owns the rookie scoring record of 14-under 278.

Ranking so far.....
1 Cody Gribble WON
2 Mackenzie Hughes WON
3 Xander Schauffele
4 Cheng Tsung Pan
5 Ryan Blaum
6 Ryan Brehm
7 Trey Mullinax
8 Ollie Schniederjans
9 Grayson Murray
10 Seamus Power

All in the in the field at the Sony Open 2017 except Murray.

KEVIN KISNER 80's, PIERCY, WOODLAND & HOWELL 111 have all good form course form.
See Poor Paddy only go 66's BUT 7 places this week

The ‘Black JAPAN’ angle.....
Another white pants for Matsuyama after the small stains last week – he has missed the cut all four times he’s played here in the last six years!!!
OWGR #55 Hideto Tanihara @300/1 is the next highest ranked player (73,8,54 here in last 4 years and in good form on the Japanese Tour) - that might become the 4th Asian to capture the Sony Open  - after Japan’s Isao Aoki (1983), Fiji’s Singh (2005) and Korean K.J. Choi in 2008. Also on a sponsor exemption are #96 Satoshi Kodaira 300's (MC last year) & #104 Daisuke Kataoka 250/1 (33rd last year). The other two Japs are Yusaku Miyazato (70,MC,MC in last 3 year) & Hiroshi Iwata (MC, MC, MC).
IF any Asian were to win here this week then it‘s 21yo Si-Woo Kim @80/1 (4th last year) BUT a poor display last week 75,70,69,78 for even par 292 does not enthuse.

A little Hawaiian Island hopping from MAUI to OAHU for this week’s Sony Open at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu for the PGA TOUR's first full-field event of the year attracting 144 of the world's finest golfers. In 2017, Waialae Country Club will be fifty-two years hosting the PGA TOUR - only exceeded by just three other venues. The Hawaiian Open started in 1965, and the tournament has been played every year with the exception of 1970, when a schedule change moved it from fall to winter.  In 1999, it became the Sony Open in Hawaii.  Sony Corporation extended its commitment to sponsor the tournament through 2018 - the 20th anniversary of title sponsor entitlement of the tournament.

The form of the top 6 ranked players...

Jordan Spieth – ranked fifth in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), hasn’t played Waialae since 2014, when he missed the cut in his debut after finishing runner-up at Kapalua. Spieth called his first Sony performance a “fluke,” and although he had to verify the name of the course – “What is it, Waialae?” Spieth said Sunday – Spieth’s caddie Michael Greller likes his player’s chances on the course. “Michael has told me for the last couple years … Waialae is one of the best courses on Tour for you,” Spieth said. “It’s almost like your Hilton Head, your Colonial, you have to kind of strike it around both ways and play in the wind, and we feel like that kind of plays to our strength, kind of trickier reads on the greens. You can make putts from mid-range and off a bunch of ridges.”

Hideki Matsuyama - mc, mc, mc, mc.....I mean why does the 24yo even bother showing up?

Paul Casey - 30th in 2015 & MC way back in 2005 and incommunicado no comment to make for the 10 weeks.

Branden Grace - makes his debut after last week v v poor effort (should be in South Africa ffs).
Justin Rose - 13th & 12th in 2011/2010 with MC & 20 in 2006/2005.

Russell Knox - mc,13,mc,mc,mc in the last 5 years - well done making the long journey/flight again. Perhaps he's a surfer?

The highlight of Joda's round came at the par-3 seventh with a hole-in-one. The World Amateur Golf Rankings #22 has played just one PGA TOUR event - a MC here at the 2012 edition while still in high school - but will have local knowledge on his side - keep one eye out on his progress this week.

Used to be that ‘learning to win’ was supposedly the toughest thing for newcomers on tour,.....but we’re seeing guys do that earlier and earlier during their PGA Tour careers

– The RSM was Hughes’ 9th start on Tour and fellow rookie Cody Gribble won the Sanderson Farms Championship in October in what was just his second start since earning his Tour card.
It seems like the decision to switch things up in 2014 and award Tour cards based solely on Web.Com Tour performance rather than Q-School has produced players, like Thomas and Gribble, who are much more likely to win early than guys fresh off a college campus because they’ve already earned their stripes in the minor leagues.

Note we're fans of Rio Olympian & World Cup player Cheng Tsung Pan - the 24-year-old second year pro who graduated from the Web.com Tour with seven T10’s helping him to 11th in the rankings. He opened the 2017 season with two missed weekends, then made two, but struggled to impose himself (T57, T46) before hitting a T6 in the RSM Classic at Sea Island. The former University of Washington star is highly thought of and was a proud and humbled representative of his nation at the 31st Olympiad where sixty players representing 34 different countries comprised the Men's Olympic Golf Competition. Pan has bagged $228,813 so far and stands 63rd on the FedEx Cup. Perhaps another surprise attack on Pearl Harbor Devil - this time from 'Chinese Taipei' hotshot Cheng Tsung - not the worst 150/1 shot in a tournament that has thrown up big priced winners.

LATE START in Honolulu...like last week 10 hrs behind us.

FIRST TEE OFF TIME is 5.00pm Thursday evening (7am local)

despite his current great start to the season I think Thomas must be a lay at his current odds. About 13-8 and history teaches us that it's extremely difficult to follow up such a low round with another good one. Ok he only has to shoot around even par to be well up there and possibly still in the lead but there's a long way to go.

Spieth drifting after shooting five under seems an overreaction.

My opinion is we need to see Thomas on a tougher course. This is made for University players. I'd like to see him in a British Open before I acknowledge Justin Thomas has made the top grade. That saying, this looks over. Obvious that Speith has lost that steely putting nerve he had. I would be apprehensive aout taking 1.6 on Thomas until after round 3/.36 holes is a lot of golf.

With his 5-under 65 on Day 3 Thomas surged his way to 22-under 188tying Steve Stricker’s mark of best opening 54 holes on the PGA TOUR (although Stricker was 25-under 188 at the John Deere Classic in 2010). Thomas will be seeking to become the fourth player to win the Sony Open in Hawaii in wire-to-wire fashion (no ties) and join K.J. Choi (2008), Paul Azinger (2000 and Howard Twitty (1993) and also will become the first player to win both the Tournament of Champions and Sony Open in Hawaii in the same season - since Ernie Els in 2003.

Have Thomas + Spieth & Kisner for the placings. Devil Sneds & Kjeldsen both MC

HONOLULU, Hawaii - wire to wire & back to back for Justin Thomas who becomes the youngest player in history to shoot 59 on the PGA TOUR with his epic opening round at the Sony Open at Waialae CC fresh off claiming his third TOUR victory at the SBS Tournament of Champions. With eight birdies and two eagles to bookend his round, Justin is just the second player behind Furyk (who has shot a 58 and a 59 on TOUR) to be sub-60 with a bogey on the card.
Thomas became just the seventh individual to shoot a sub-60 round on the PGA TOUR. He joined illustrious company with Al Geiberger, Chip Beck, David Duval, Paul Goydos, Stuart Appleby and Mr 58 in that exclusive club and at just 23-years-old is by far the youngest to do so. Duval was 27 when he managed the feat at this week’s Tour stop, the CareerBuilder Challenge, back in 1999.
“We all know it's the magical number in golf. I knew I had a great chance in Malaysia last year, and I was really honestly pretty bummed when that didn't happen” - JT.
Thomas also went on to do what Geiberger, Duval and Appleby achieved – win the god damn tournament!!! The new OWGR #8 finish off his third appearance on 27-under 253, good for a 7-shot win over Justin Rose, his fourth PGA title in his 74th career start (70 pro), and setting a new 72-hole aggregate scoring record on TOUR.

A little Hawaiian Island hopping from MAUI to OAHU for this week’s SONY OPEN at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu for the PGA TOUR's first full-field event of the year attracting 144 of the world's finest golfers. In 2018, Waialae Country Club will be fifty-three years hosting the PGA TOUR - only exceeded by just three other venues.

Jim "Bones" Mackay is on the bag !

Justin Thomas returns to the scene of his infamous '59' as he prepares for a title defense at this week's Sony Open in Hawaii WITHOUT his regular caddy. Thomas cruised to victory - opened the week with an 11-under 59 and then added rounds of 64-65-65. (He led by 3, 5, 7, and 7 as the week progressed).
Regular caddie, Jimmy Johnson will be sidelined for at least a month (Plantar fasciitis a common cause of heel pain). Justin's dad caddie last week, but for the SONY he's got Jim "Bones" Mackay on the bag.

With Phil Mickelson never playing in the Sony Open, Mackay's knowledge of the course will be limited but that shouldn't be a problem for Thomas who will be playing this course for the fourth year in a row. It's will be interesting to see how the duo mesh. His 8/1 compares a bit better to 5's for Spieth. Devil
