Dear Betfair,
Will you offer fast withdrawals in the near future? 3-5 working days is a bit old fashioned and unnecessary.

We received this question in the last forum chat: a method that enables us to make faster payments is definitely something we want to adopt as it makes sense for both depositing and withdrawing with Betfair. There are a few challenges that we need to meet before we can start to fully utilise the service but we are in the process of seeing how we can do this and we hope to have some changes in-place in early 2011.

Hi guys,
Is there any chance in the future that my weekly PC statement be presented in Australian dollars, especially given the fact that it is where all my betting activity takes place?

Unfortunately, this won’t be possible.  In order to maintain consistency in the Premium Charge calculation, we have specific currency conversion times and rates to standardise customer activity in to GBP.

Hello,
With the recent launch of the Forum Beta, I have noticed that the forum isn't has popular as it used to be due to many accounts being suspended or deleted. Do you have any plans to change this so the forum can be used to it's full potential?

First of all, thank you for your participation in the forums.  To answer your question, we need to clarify that we did not suspend or delete accounts when we launched the Beta.  We have seen some comments in the forum suggesting that posting activity is down, but it is not due to suspensions or deletions.  We believe that there is a learning curve with the Beta and it will take some time for users to become familiar with all the features of the Beta. While posting dipped when the Beta launched, activity has bounced back in the subsequent weeks.  We also see that more users are visiting the forums and reading the forum and blog posts. Given that the new forum is still a Beta, we continue to make improvements on collect customer feedback.  Our goal is to increase posting activity and engagement.  Please provide feedback in the Beta Feedback forum if you have suggestions on how to make the Beta better.

Back in July, I asked
Hi Betfair
Do you have plans to introduce each-way multiple betting, with or without Fred Done-style bonuses?
If not, why not?
and you replied
We do plan to introduce each way multiple at some point in the future, which would be an extension of our win SP multiples product.
So, when?

Thanks for your question, each way multiples are planned for launch in the first half of 2011.

Please can we have an "Exposure limit" at market/selection level not just full account? This would be a fantastic extra as many of us will rarely place a bet above a
certain amount.  If someone hacks your account, they will likely try and transfer your money in several ways (to be explained below) one of which is to place a bet with
the hacked funds and lay it off with their other account.  This I assume would be done with highly liquid events i.e., an important football match where it is nigh on
impossible to see where it would have been transferred.  By having a bet exposure limit, the criminal would have to place numerous bets in order to "transfer" funds.
This could prevent losing the whole bank immediately with the chance of noticing the hack earlier.  Also, it may be possible for betfair security to whittle down the
possible criminals (all users betting in same events). This option would also have another massive improvement as it could help protect clients against spelling
mistakes i.e., backing for £1000 when you meant £100 could be avoided if client had say a limit of £500 defined!

We currently offer Loss Limits on our Arcade & Quick Play and Poker products, and there is also transfer limits functionality available on our Exchange Games and Casino products.

Please can we be have an option to be emailed/SMS if our login ip address changes?  Letting us know when an ip login address changes allows us to change passwords /
contact the betfair security team immediately if we know it isn't us.

We will evaluate this alert in conjunction with the answer to question number 3 (below).

Please can we be have an option to be emailed/SMS if sensitive data is changed on the site i.e., password changes, address changes, bank/credit cards added to
account etc.

As requested by our customers, our security team has worked to develop alerting on any changes to customer account details.  This will mean that changes to passwords, payment methods, address and other account changes will be notified to the e-mail address we have for the account. Changes to e-mail address will be sent to the old e-mail address as confirmation. This provides additional visibility and security of your customer account details and should be in place in the first quarter of next year.

Please can we have options to restrict access from other countries (but no option to unrestrict) - this should be possible by analysing the login ip address.  If we
go on holiday abroad and want to access betfair, maybe lifting of the country restriction should only be allowed by phoning betfair (not a web-account option) - I am
assuming there would be security checks done over phone, maybe also some email confirmation (a link you have to click)?  I believe something like this used to be an
option why has it been removed?

This functionality did not perform well enough and was only taken up by a few customers. We are continuing to analyse how best to redeploy this capability in the future as a part of improvements to the ‘My Security’ tab.

I know that if there were unscrupulous employees at betfair, account login info could be easily leaked or could it?  What measures do betfair use to ensure the
security of member's accounts?  I assume there is some kind of top encryption on login details but is there additional security on these databases to prevent say any
betfair developer querying this data?

Please be assured that account login details, such as passwords, are not stored in the database in clear text. Passwords are hashed and security questions are encrypted. Databases and account access are monitored by Security staff to prevent unauthorised access.

What is the actual history on BF accounts being hacked and monies transferred out ?
Has BF compensated people ?

As with any online business, Betfair can suffer attacks against its customers and accounts. However we have extensive monitoring of these through a number of different techniques and treat each and every event seriously in order to protect our customers and their funds. We urge all customers to ensure they keep their account details safe and, if they believe an issue has occurred, to immediately call the Helpdesk.

What happens when people add new bank cards to their betfair accounts, can they withdraw funds immediately to these different accounts?  If immediate withdrawal
possible and money was withdrawn to a criminal bank account would this be the responsibility of betfair/the bank/the client?  Perhaps a cool off period would be
beneficial for withdrawals to new cards?  This leads onto next question:

We operate a closed loop policy which enforces the withdrawal of funds back to their source. This means that the customer will be required to level off any deposits made with the same amount of withdrawals for certain payment methods (Cards, Moneybookers, Neteller, Paypal) before withdrawal of any excess funds back to a different payment source.  There is currently a delay in our withdrawal process which enables us to carry out enhanced checks before processing payments.

Please can we have a tighter login to the website, i.e., what banks use i.e., select letters from a memorable word/password from drop down boxes - this makes it more
difficult for keyloggers to pick this info up.

Our security team are currently evaluating a number of different authentication options to roll out next year to provide additional protection as requested by our users. This suggestion will be incorporated into that analysis and evaluation.

Please can the whole website be changed to use https (like the api) so that users using public wifi etc have more security (prevent their sessions being cloned etc)?

We are evaluating this change across our products and as it is a significant change in our website operation it must be planned with care. For clarity, authentication is performed via HTTPS encryption.

The current security feature on the website shows the last 10 logins, this is not very practical as many users login multiple times during the day.  Instead could
we have a list of all distinct ip addresses with the last time it was used to login (say for last 6 months)?

This is a good suggestion and we will incorporate this thinking into any planned changes to the My Security page.

Please can you contact the forumite known as Hazel to rectify a known security problem - "I can log into the account of anyone I know without needing to know their
password. Indeed betfair customer services staff could also breach this security risk."

We have made contact with the forum user concerned and understand the risk they have identified. We do not feel our customers are at any greater risk of compromise based on what was disclosed but as always we do advise customers to have strong passwords and security questions. If customers would like these changed please use the website or contact our Helpdesk.

Do Betfair have any additional security improvements planned for the future which is not contained in the above list?

To summarise, Betfair are improving both internal security controls as well as security features seen by the customer. This includes alerting on suspicious activity to our fraud teams, the evaluation of 2-factor authentication offered on an opt-in basis, the improvements of customer alerting around changes to password details, address or other account details, and improvements to the ‘My Security’ tab on the website. As always Betfair appreciates customer feedback in this area.

Hello
- Why is the settlement of the last night race repeatedly late?
10-Dec-10 21:25 10-Dec-10 21:59 - last at Dundalk, at least 15 minutes after the weigh-in
- What prompted you to remove brief horseracing results more quickly since the revision of the site?  I don't want to waste time looking up full results one-by-one, so I use the Sporting Life site now.

Apologies if that particular Dundalk race took a little longer than usual, but please be assured we settle all races in exactly the same way, whether it is the first of the afternoon or the last of the night. We generally settle all GB and Irish racing within two minutes of the finish - however we do reserve the right to delay that until the weighed in signal is given if we believe there may be cause for a Stewards Enquiry.
Our Quick Results are still available on the racing homepage. They are also available at the bottom of the homepage on our form site, under the heading “Just finished”. Also, if you click on the Racecourse name in the results section of our form site you can access all the results of a meeting on one page.

I understand we cannot  gamble online whilst visiting the USA.  But it's also not possible to participate in the forums from there either.  Why is this?  Could it be changed?

Unfortunately our security measures to prevent people betting from the US include preventing log-in.  That means that you can view but not post to the forum.  There is no legal reason to prevent forum posting from the US and we’ll have a look into that but it’s quite a complex change and could take a while.

Are you going to fix the speed of the new forum? It is so slow to load each page, making it tiresome to use. A faster, more responsive website would make it much more pleasant to use.

We are very aware of the performance issues with the new software and have made many changes over the last few months to improve the speed of the forum.  We have noticed that some browsers are faster than others.  Firefox or Chrome do browsers appear to be faster than IE if that helps.  We are continuing to look for ways to speed up the forum as we can see how much difference it makes.

Hi,
Longstanding customer with BF, worked for you and been involved in sports betting industry for 23+ years,
BF's commission structure charging on net profit on the market is discriminatory between straight punters and traders as the Trader is afforded the luxury of making several "bets" and only paying commission on a small amount whereas the straight punter may only have one bet and pay a much larger commission. Surely this an uneven playing field and the straight punter is subsidising the trader. Now I know all the arguments about Traders bring liquidity ....... but there are better and more equal ways to get liquidity. The Matchbook method where they charge 1% on potential profit win or lose if you take an existing order or pay you -0.2% if someone takes your order seems more equitable IMO.
Its hard to argue BF's business model has worked and "why change a good thing" attitude but it is only going take one company with decent backing, site and management to offer a system that is more equitable to straight punters for that fraternity on BF to leave and leave the traders to play amongst themselves. For me its certainly been the case that BF is so rarely the best option pricewise for me to bet nowadays due to the commission structure and the fact that I straight bet. It used to account for about 30% of my annual turnover now it is less than 5%.

Thanks for your feedback, you make some interesting points. We continually review our pricing and we’re happy that commission on net winnings strikes the right balance for all of our customer segments at the present time.

Why are you incapable of removing scratched runners with any degree of consistency?  Night after night your market mangers miss scratched runners.
I must have sent you at least 30 emails in the last month alone advising you of these scratches, not only do you ignore them you don't have the courtesy to reply.
You own TVG, yet still your market management is very poor at best.
Please don't do what you done last Q & A session and tell me a problem doesn't exist because it does.

Regarding US racing, our response has still not changed since the last live chat:
US racing has 15-20 sites, such as DRF, Equibase, NTRA, E-Horse, ESPN, Brisnet, among others.
Through our years of offering US racing we have found only two sites with an acceptable accuracy in these situations - and even then they make mistakes. For this reason we always wait until both of those sites detail the NRs before we remove any non runners.
We could act more quickly, but this would lead certainly to more mistakes and runners being scratched in error – and that is a far worse customer experience.
We are still looking into other information feeds, though, and hope to constantly make improvements .Although we may not reply in a timely manner your emails are always looked at and sent to the relevant teams and we will continue to do that going forward should you find the need to email in

Why is there not a greater choice of multiple bets? Very popular bets such as Round Robins and Lucky 15s, with treble the odds for winner. In fact there are no bets which offer a return for one winner on Betfair, bets like these are freely available in the High Street.

We are pleased to say that we will be offering Lucky 15’s, 31’s and 63’s within the next couple of months. Keep your eyes on the football coupon for the first lot of changes.
We do currently offer singles and also a patent which includes singles; just simply add a stake to the singles box on the multiples bet slip and they’ll be included.

I have a question regarding in play betting.  Have you ever considered, rather than having an in play delay, having a live market where bets placed are immediately matched provisionally.  Five seconds after the bets are matched provisionally, they are then confirmed.  However if an event such as a goal or a sending off occurs during those five seconds, the market is suspended and all bets at that moment that are in a provisional state are cancelled.  This would give a much more satisfying live betting experience to the user, while also protecting the users of the site from TV delays
pst, United Kingdom.

Thanks for that suggestion which makes interesting reading. Whilst we have no plans currently to change the way in-play bet matching works, we will give your idea more thought.

Several times over recent years the percentage of accounts in profit has been published by Betfair publicly in a variety of places.
Can you tell us what the figure is as of now? Also, whilst I would never expect Betfair to compromise profitable customers' positions by detailing what kind of customers they are or how they trade, can you confirm if profitable accounts generally tend to be dominated with lay bets, back bets or a mixture?

We did once (in 2004) state that a very small proportion of our customers had Betfair profits of £15,000 or more annually. That however, is as far as we have ever gone in this respect. Given the 100% nature of Betfair markets there is no obvious advantage to backing over laying (or vice versa), so we would not expect to see any profitability bias to either type of betting, though it is not something we have investigated.

As a huge fan of in-running betting on horseracing, am I your only customer to find the picture delays an frustrating and unfair advantage to those playing at home? Surely in this digital age, it’s poor form for Betfair to champion such an unfair advantage for those playing with a 3-5 second advantage on track and not to be doing anything about it. Have you any plans to come into the 21st century and ensure a level-playing field?
Yours disappointed

Thanks for the question, which has been asked previously, as there hasn’t been a change in our stance it might be useful to reproduce the response we gave last time round, which was:

“We have spoken, at length, to the two UK racing channels and encouraged them to explore ways to reduce the signal delay. Both are limited in what they can do because of their relationships with Sky and for them the issue of how quickly and consistently the signal is delivered is simply not a priority.

If it were simply a matter of money then the latency problems would have been resolved by now. It is not. There are a number of technical issues that make real time picture delivery for every customer watching in every country Betfair operates in, simply impossible.

Customers who post on the forum tend to be UK based and view events from a very UK-centric view but there are also many people betting on UK racing around the world and they often see TV pictures that are even more delayed than in the UK. Those we have spoken to are aware of this and choose to bet anyway believing that their race reading skills compensate for any picture delay, or are happy to leave bets up in-running, as insurance against bets placed before the off.

Each broadcaster has a different way of making their signal available to viewers but even if they were both to agree to operate in the same way, customers would still see pictures at differing times. It is an inevitable consequence of different delivery systems that those people watching via cable, satellite, online or elsewhere will all see signals at differing times.

Those people who choose to watch a live event and hoping to taking advantage of beating any picture delay are hindered by the connectivity of their internet connections which can be slower on course than elsewhere. There are now so many people utilising what they think are faster picture service providers that the playing field for in-running betters is probably more level than it has ever been.

As well as Betfair informing customers of possible delays in 'live' pictures, in both the market information text and at the point of bet placement, some broadcasters themselves now commonly tell viewers to be mindful when betting in-running that what they are watching can sometimes be a couple of seconds or so behind real time.

If anyone has a suggestion as to how to circumvent the various technical issues to help overcome the variance in service I am sure the broadcasters would be delighted to hear from you or you could let us know and we'll take it up directly with them.”

We are working on the “my account” section of the website and we know it’s not ideal – like most fast-growing companies, we’ve added things a piece at a time and there’s a fair amount of effort required to pull everything together (mostly “back-end” work that’s invisible to our customers).   We will be updating much of our site during 2011 and the “my account” section will be imporved as part of the work.

For years, you have run a 'beta' results service webpage at:

http://rss.betfair.com/

It's almost perfect - a great place to see the results for a huge range of sports and markets. However, the results aren't 100% reliable - e.g.

horse race results sometimes have football teams or scores in the winners list, markets often appear in the wrong section, etc.

I've reported these issues to the feedback email address many times, but there doesn't seem to be any improvement. Do you have any plans to fix the service? It's been 'beta' for years now.

We have a number of Beta products that have never quite made it into the mainstream.  Sorry if you’ve tried to contact us and haven’t had a satisfactory response.  Not sure what the future holds for this one, so we will follow up and get you an answer.

With the bad winter ahead of us and racing being frozen off at will, when oh when are we to have a dedicated greyhound racing radio, we all listen to mediaondemand greyhound coverage at the moment, but believe Betfair are missing a great chance to boost greyhound turnover in the future by not having a greyhound channel,if the guys on the mediaondemand service were given the chance to interact with betfair prices it would take off bigtime,as it is they have to skirt round the issue of laying greyhounds as they are employed by other bookmakers,PLEASE can you think of giving us our own radio dedicated to the greyhounds, 3 of the guys on the mediaondemand service enjoy cult status on the greyhound forum and using these 3 guys could make the greyhound betting on your site boom

As you’ll no doubt be aware we did briefly include greyhound racing as part of Timeform Radio some time ago. We appreciate that this was merely a dipping of the toe into a full service, but the reality is that it didn’t generate the increased revenue required to fund such a feature permanently. Of course the markets have developed since and rest assured we continually assess the possibility of bringing it back.

We would have the pleasure to place bets without delay between the first and second half of football matches.
This would allow many operations of scalping (like in prelive of horse races) and this would attract many traders.
The volumes, and consequently the commissions, would be much greater.
Remove the delay between the first and second time would be a great idea.
The delay is not needed during this phase.

Although we understand the merits of this request unfortunately we have no plans to remove the bet delay during half time at this stage; when markets are turned in-play, we want customers to be fully aware that the game is in progress at all times through to its conclusion.  The in-play delay is the most suitable indicator of this.

Any chance you could put markets up for Shelbourne Park on Saturdays seen as the meeting is shown via the internet?

We are always keen to introduce markets for events that are popular – however we have to balance that by being sure we can manage those markets efficiently, and that they will attract sufficient liquidity. Presently, we don’t think Shelbourne Park racing meets the latter criteria, but it is something we will continue to review.

I know that a couple of years ago you put some of the ATP (tennis) challengers up but didn’t last year and haven’t done this year. I was wondering what the reasons for this were? I know there were a few posts on the forum at the time which touched on regulatory/commercial issues. Out of interest would you care to expand on these? With the season planned to be shortened from 2012 onwards, are there any issues you plan on addressing to possibly provide these matches in the future?

Lower-grade tennis fixtures can be difficult to manage for us and sometimes don’t attract enough liquidity to be worthwhile for customers.  We are reviewing for next year and will look closely at whether the challengers are viable for 2011.

In recent weeks / months there have been several Premier League and La Liga football matches where people have been ‘beating the clock’, ie placing a bet once a goal has been scored and it getting matched before the market is suspended. There are many threads on the football forum to support that this is occurring. What are Betfair doing to prevent this problem as it affects the integrity of the markets and will ultimately drive away liquidity from in-play football. The simplest solution would seem to be to increase the bet placement delay by a couple of seconds?

We are happy to investigate any specific markets you are concerned with and invite any customers to send
us details of those.  In-play delays and market activity is monitored continuously by our operational teams and if there is ever a case of bets being matched unfairly, we treat such matters seriously.

Apologies, you’re right, we didn’t answer your question – it’s an interesting point which we’ll raise with the right expert internally. Setting multiple limits on accounts is complex though, would slow the site down and can be confusing so not sure if that’s the best way to address your concern. However, a number of overseas websites and independent streaming providers are ALREADY providing live pictures with dramatically reduced latency compared to Betfair live video or domestic satellite sports channels.

My question is this; as an interim measure, can you at least assure customers you are aggressively pursuing the adoption this technology if it can be faciliatated at the right price? In my view, the technology is already working which coud considerably alleviate this problem. (I obviously do not wish to mention specific company names in this question, but I am sure you are well aware of the providers being referred to.)

Thank you,

If we had our way, we’d love to be able to provide everyone with the fastest streamed content that was technically possible. In practice, it varies depending on where the stream is coming from, how it’s being filmed and by whom. Some of the streaming we provide is exceptionally fast (like the Aus Open Tennis, where it’s filmed and streamed directly from the court and beats the TV signal which hops around the globe), some is slower. Only parts of the process are within our control and dependent on technology – we’re always pushing our providers to provide the fastest feeds they can but I think the speed will be variable across events for the foreseeable future.
