Palace away in the next round. The quadruple is on. Excited   Not too bothered about the game tomorrow and not sure how seriously Poch'll take it.

I still think you should be looking to get past Chelsea and give 100% v Man City in the final .
I fully understand your concerns about actually competing seriously for a trophy but you have plenty of time between now and then to rearrange your trophy cabinet so as to makes a little room at the back for the EFL Cup . If you are unfortunate enough to win more than one piece of silverware this season then you may have to consider extending the trophy room at your new gaff to accommodate your collection .
Good luck this evening Cool

Reynard, I'd certainly like for Spurs to win this cup but I'm remaining stoic as I'm unconvinced how much Poch will really go for it. And recent semi-final appearances certainly don't inspire confidence. Hope I'm wrong though. Grin

pretty clear we won that for one reason alone the sheer ineptitude of chelsea in and around the box. as we suspected they are really struggling for goals at the moment

on the plus side we can't possibly play as badly at stamford bridge. only 1 game now in the next 12 days so a chance to regroup and get some much needed rest after this mad period of a game every 3 days
Report Knight Rider January 9, 2019 2:24 AM GMT
Central midfield has gone down a notch this season hasn't it.  I'm a big Wanyama fan, hopefully we can get him back in the fold at some point.  But it's definitely the position where I'd love to see us stick 50m+ on the table for a player that Poch fancies.  Easier said than done of course, they don't grow on trees!
Report mafeking January 9, 2019 2:35 AM GMT
long time no see, KR

we've done fantastically well considering sissoko and winks have had to hold the fort for the majority of the season so far. no surprise that we haven't looked that secure defensively and well below the standards of 2016/17 when dembele and waynama were a fixture in the side and gave great protection to the back 4. tbh hard to see waynama returning to anything like he was now after all the injuries. looked miles off the pace in his fleeting appearances earlier in the season. obviously if we can get vertonghen back with alderweireld together on a regular basis in the next few weeks should look a lot better
Report Knight Rider January 9, 2019 2:43 AM GMT
Got fed up of all the moaning Maf especially from one particular poster.

If we can secure top 4 again this season I think that's a great effort but we will need to have a really good summer in the transfer market.  As mentioned centre mid is a glaring need but Alderweireld looks like he's off, Vertonghen coming towards the end and Lloris needs to be replaced (am hoping Gazzaniga is good enough to do that but we don't really know yet).  Sanchez has disappointed me a bit this season, thought he was going to really kick on in year 2.  Felt like his best performances were when we played a back three last year, Poch seems to have abandoned that completely.  Shame as you could see it suiting the likes of Foyth as well.

Over run in midfield same as against Wolves.
Despite what mafe says Dembele will be sorely missed.
Thank god the Chavs decided to play without a proper centre forward otherwise it
might have been a different story.
Dier and to some extent Wayama badly missed, because Eriksen and Dele were almost
holding midfielders.

Atmosphere 100% better, with Rose and Toby outstanding.
Toby and Eriksen should be signed up quickly , because we are not going
to be anywhere near the same standard without them.

Unfortunately the tie not sealed and I'm none too hopeful next leg, although Sarri
will need to change his tactics or buy Higuain.
Report mafeking January 9, 2019 1:10 PM GMT
of course we will need a replacement for dembele but he's looked on his last legs for a while anyway. dier has been badly missed. no one to break it up at the moment

agree it was much better closing the top level and having everyone in the lower 2 tiers. no gaps behind the goals last night

suppose in the cold light of day shows we can now beat the best teams even being nowhere near our best. same at old trafford stayed in the game then ran away with it. did well not to buckle under intense pressure particularly 2nd half

not sure what will really change for the 2nd leg. chelsea still unlikely to be much more potent in front of goal and if anything we've better away from the normally awful wembley atmosphere
Report Aspro January 9, 2019 2:24 PM GMT

I'm not so negative Fig; I firmly believe that at we're capable of at least one goal, which needs Chelsea to score two just to survive the tie. I think we have every chance of making the final.

Personnel in midfield contentious ,what isn't is that "the diamond" is not a good set up to defend ,at least three sides simply overload midfield after going behind and dominate Spurs
Report FIGJAM January 11, 2019 12:57 PM GMT
Imho I thought that we played our best defence with 3 at the back in Jan, Sanchez and Toby with Dier and Dembele our
optimum midfield.
Injuries have obviously upset that but I'd like to see our back 3 restored ASAP.

Two circa 11/10 chances this week which looked under priced are us and Arsenil.
If we play Winks and Sissoko in midfield again, we'll get over run.
Report FIGJAM January 11, 2019 1:01 PM GMT

Report FIGJAM January 11, 2019 3:51 PM GMT
I'm worried for two reasons.
One we've got way more injuries than Man U.
Two their manager is getting the standard they should've had attained under the previous manager
given the spend.

That said as you mentioned their defence apart from the goalkeeper is decidedly dodgy.
What is apparent is that we're not a 11/10 chance in 3 horse race.
Report Aspro January 11, 2019 3:57 PM GMT
Can't read too much into recent Utd results, even Mourinho would have won those, but as you say Fig, we do have a lot of injuries which could be a factor.
Report mafeking January 11, 2019 4:06 PM GMT
indeed 4 hopeless cases and a totally out of form bournemouth. questions would have to be asked of any top club who failed to win at least 4 of those 5 whoever the manager. not a big fan of mid season breaks to hot destinations either. seen plenty of teams come back with flip flops on at least initially

11/10 is around the right price to me. home win between 2 teams of roughly equal ability should be slightly odds against. the 2.6 against chelsea was way out of line
Report Aspro January 11, 2019 4:12 PM GMT
I think one advantage we do have is playing on a pitch that is still obviously bumpy, which would suit us better considering we've had no choice but to get used to it. Keep Pogba quiet and the rest should go to form.

Kane not looking good and could be out for a number of games; like we need more injuries. I doubt any Utd fan will think they deserved the win, but sometimes these things happen. Another day we put 4/5 past them.

Champions League spot still quite secure but with Son out and now Kane (it would appear), we need a little bit of luck on our side, or Levy to dig deep, otherwise we could slip further.

Not a great day but still enough to suggest we're still a team to be reckoned with and happily we've got what should be a beatable team next in Fulham.

Kriskin, you're talking bollox mate. We have been much better against the bigger teams and should have won by a margin today.. only an idiot would say otherwise. A bit naive to judge us on the midweek game and ignore the other big wins we've had both at home and in Europe, which included a comprehensive win over Chelsea in December, a draw away to Barcelona, beating Utd away and Arsenal in the cup and Inter Milan... if that is "very average" - you're obviously new to the sport.

It's been a bugbear of mine since time immemorial that of all the top teams we have the
worse amount of attacking midfielders.
For example United have an abundance of them along with City and the Chavs.
Arsenil use to have a surfeit but now there got an accountant in charge that's not going to happen.

A mate of mine asked me last week how we would fare against Manure I said I wasn't optimistic as they've got a
