I've just discovered from watching the BBC World Cup preview that England's final group match against Belgium is in Kalingrad.  Apparently this is a Russian city but nowhere near Russia!  It is 300 miles away from the nearest Russian border and is actually closest to Poland.  It would be like England hosting a World Cup and having some of the games in Brussels or Amsterdam!

Gibraltar or the Falklands more like, imo.

It's still part of Russia. It would be more comparable to Gibraltar, but even then not a direct comparison as Gibraltar as some of it's own governance, whereas Kaliningrad is directly a part of Russia.

kalinagrad is probably more famous as konigsberg

there is a famous teaser that we had to solve as kids

the konigsberg bridge problem

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Bridges_of_Königsberg

try to walk over all 7 bridges without crossing any bridge twice

Sure n88, I was only suggesting the two nearest places we have anywhere near such an idea.

Apparently there was something similar in 1974 when West Germany were hosts.  Some of the matches were played in West Berlin which was 100 miles east of the West German border and was actually within East Germany.  Just been reading about it and didn't realise that the Berlin Wall wasn't built until 1961, I had always assumed it went up shortly after World War 2 ended.

East Germany played their second group game in West Berlin too.
