Wiki
The Golden Ball award is presented to the best player at each FIFA World Cup finals, with a shortlist drawn up by the FIFA technical committee and the winner voted for by representatives of the media. Those who finish as runners-up in the vote receive the Silver Ball and Bronze Ball awards as the second and third most outstanding players in the tournament respectively. The current award was introduced in the 1982 FIFA World Cup, sponsored by Adidas and France Football, though fifa.com also lists in their player articles as "golden ball winners" Kempes, Cruyff, Pelé, Bobby Charlton, Garrincha and Didi for 1978, 1974, 1970, 1966, 1962 and 1958 respectively.[3]

From FIFA website
FIFA will announce a shortlist of ten players after the semi-finals. The Technical Study Group of FIFA will decide on the winner until the end of the Final. (sounds like a contradiction to the above re the media?)

This link also seems to confirm it’ll be the Technical Group only, which at least is made up of former players
http://www.aipsmedia.com/2018/05/31/22920/world-cup-russia-2018-technical-study-group-carlos-alberto-parreira-emmanuel-amunike-bora-milutinović-alessandro-nesta-andy-roxburgh-marco-van-basten-awards

4 of the 6 ex players/coaches on the Techical Study Group team are Europeans (1x ex Italian Defender, 1x ex Serbian midfielder, 2x forwards, Dutch/Scottish), 1 is South American (ex Brazil coach), 1 is African (ex Nigeria midfielder), not sure if that’s even worth mentioning but maybe there will be some unconscious bias towards positions/countries/continents.

Some statistics based on the above tables

-66.67% of winners were forwards, 22.22% were attacking Mids, 11.11% were/was a Goalkeeper, no defenders.
-33.33% of winners were  players from theTournament winners, 44.44% of winners were Tournament runners-up, 100% of winners played the full 7 matches, i.e. they reached the Semi finals and either played the subsequent 3rd/4th play-off match of the Final.
-22.22% of Golden Ball Winners have also won the Golden Boot in the same tournament, the last being in 1990, 33.33% of winners were also Top Goalscorers or joint Top Goalscorers.
-77.78% of winners were in the top 2 for Goals + Assists combined, the only outfield player not to be was Messi in 2014, those 4 MOTM awards appears to be a real swinger.
-85% of nominees for the Golden Boot in the last 2 World Cups made the Semi Finals and played all 7 matches, the remaining15% were Quarter Finalists.

The main sets of criteria will all play a part in a who’ll be the overall winner, Goals + Assists + MOTM awards + Round reached, other statistics such as key passes, aerial duels won, possession of the ball etc will probably be used to help make up the numbers for the remaining nominations which may explain Mascherano making the list in Brazil. I would imagine FIFA are not keen on one player winning two awards. Interestingly, 4 of the previous 5 winners has been a player who finished Runner Up in the tournament.

Value shots.
Mostly drawn towards players who are nailed on starters for countries that I’ve projected to make the last 4 as well as those from borderline, QF/SF’s and the odd darkhorse (or two), will also be going against the grain by picking a couple of defenders…. and they are

Perisic 150/1, Carrasco 150/1, Pauline 150/1, Kimmich 150/1, Giroud 100/1, Willian 100/1, Ramos 80/1, Di Maria 66/1, Hazard 28/1, if I had to pick one player to win the Golden Ball, then the winner would be……………..

GIROUD @ 100/1

I think Giroud is good value, would rather back him at 100’s than Greizmann at 16’s and Neymar's at 8's, Giroud should start every game, deceptively underrated technical player, scores goals, assists, MOTM potential, capable of the spectacular (Scorpion Kick), has plenty of quality around him to create chances and be the creator…and I have France winning the tournament. Probably not the diamond in the rough most would be looking for and the fact he is unfashionable does counts against him but K sera sera, if anyone those above win then it's happy dayz.

Kind Regards.

You have to think outside the box in this game, Olivier ticks every box but is going unnoticed, it's right in front of you, never look a gift horse in the north and south.

A technical committee made up of ex pros are not going to give a monkeys who sponsors the ball.

Mpbappe looks likely to miss the first, maybe second or all 3 Group games after an injury in training, even more likely Giroud will be winning the Golden Ball.

neymars price will crash as soon as he gets on the score sheet, looks an easy trade 10/1 in places now
Report flukes June 12, 2018 8:26 PM BST
Where are you seeing 10/1 Neymar for Golden Boot roadrunner? He's that price for top goalscorer but generally 8/1 or less across the board for the Golden Boot

What beavis and butthead above don't understand is that, whilst Giroud is no where near the best player in the tournament, he can be the best player AT the tournament, Schillachi in 1990, I would hazard a guess he was much bigger than 100/1 for the Golden Ball.

Also think Perisic is the best of the dark horses.

Kind Regards.

My sources close to the French Camp are telling me that Giroud will be benched tomorrow and the front 3 will indeed be Dembele / Griezmann / Mbappe

If this is true, I would be changing my Golden Ball prediction to Perisic @150/1 who I've backed anyway and have also had a smaller punt on Dembele @ 80/1 and Willian @100/1

Have they announced whether Ronaldo or Messi is the Player of the Tournament yet?

Or do they have to pretend that it is not decided by their main Sponsors?
