Amazing you can only ref 10 or less games in the last 12 months including just 6 with the ref from Oceania and be called up to the World Cup over seasoned refs from England and other top leagues.

Dont forget with VAR in Russia retrospective bookings and sendings off could apply at half time  i think  , would they count though on card markets ?

mesmerised... a kindred spirit. Forget the nob'eds running around doing a bit of P.E.  We know where the real action in Russia will be played out Mischief.

Nestor Pitana will take charge of the opening game. He's not shy in giving out the odd card and pen. 9th on the list above from 35 refs in dishing out yellows per game in the last year, joint 3rd for pens.

Saudi Captain Osama Hawsawi 4/1 to be carded, 3/1 for a pen given.

The officials situation is ludicrous. Hopefully a few of the less experienced ones will only get dead rubbers or 4th official duties.

They announced yesterday that assistant refs have been told to keep their flags down for marginal off-sides. My first thought was, this should mean more goals in theory, right? The ball is going to hit the net more often than it would if an immediate off-side decision is made, and a higher proportion of ruled out goals should count as goals. (Although we mustn't forget the 'goals' VAR will no doubt rule out.)

Unfortunately though, there will be significantly more time wasted (by continuous referral to VAR and due to late decisions/playing on after being offside) which will negate this effect and we could actually end up with less goals than the past few World Cups.

Then I realised that less "live" minutes in a game should favour defensive minded teams slightly (easier to shut teams out) as well as underdogs (bigger luck factor). However, VAR itself negates the luck factor by correcting referee mistakes. So that was a waste of time then!

But... it's also an interesting point: If underdogs can no longer win or scrape draws as a result of dodgy refereeing decisions they become even bigger underdogs. And the favourites become even stronger favourites.

Are we set for a World Cup with few surprises?
