Premier League clubs are now the dominant force in Europe, says Paul Merson LaughLaughLaugh

Barca, Real, Bayern will be quaking at prospect of facing Man City, Sky Sports pundit adds LaughLaughLaughLaughLaugh

Premier League clubs are now the dominant force in Europe and their achievements in the Champions League should not be downplayed, says Paul Merson.

Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham all shone in the Champions League this week, earning positive results which left all of them in pole position to reach the quarter-finals.

And Merse highlighted Spurs' come-from-behind 2-2 draw at Serie A champions Juventus as evidence Europe's top sides are unable to cope with the Premier League's brand of football. LaughLaughLaugh

"What Tottenham did to Juventus was mind-blowing," he told The Debate. Laugh

"We don't give credit when credit is due in this country, Laugh we often put great results down to luck or the opposition having an off day.

"Spurs were 2-0 down to a last season's finalists, a team that had won 10 on the trot, and came back to dominate. They were phenomenal - I loved watching them.

"They took the game to Juventus. They were so much better that they were scary. For me, that told us the Premier League is right up there.

"Our clubs played at the pace of the Premier League with power and pace, and teams couldn't live with us." LaughLaughLaugh

And Merse believes the form of Pep Guardiola's runaway Premier League leaders will have Europe's heavyweights quaking in their boots. LaughLaughLaughLaughLaugh

"I think Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are all fearful of Manchester City," he added. LaughLaughLaughLaughLaughLaugh

"Barca, Real and Bayern will not want to face them over two legs, they may fancy their chances in a one-off game, but they will want to avoid drawing them." LaughLaughLaughLaughLaughLaughLaugh

Yep , it's all on Mourinho.  They have much better forwards than Sevilla, so an end to end tie with lots of chances United will outscored them unless they are very unlucky.  Sevilla's only hope was a tight tie which comes down to whoever takes 1 or 2 chances. And that's what Mourinho set it up as.

The more I think the more hilarious it is that Utd scored 1 goal against Sevilla over 180 minutes which regularly concede goals. I can barely remember a chance Utd created in both legs.

I absolutely hated after 1st leg how Mourinho acted in the interview. He was acting like 0-0 was job done, pleased and happy with how little we restricted them to. This is just so negative, it's Sevilla, not Barcelona, 0-0 is a crap result, and it was only 0-0 because of De Gea, Utd literally played to not even score in the game, tonight I don't even know what the plan was tbh.

Tend to agree. Problem is he will just about grind enough results to hit minimum requirements, but given the squad he's not getting the most out of it. It's hard to see him actually taking Utd beyond this level though. I feel like Utd could spend another £200m this summer and it won't change a thing.

The defensive setup means you don't concede many, and given the quality of players you have going forward you will still outscore a lot of teams efficiently going forward, but you can't see how it ever competes with the true elite of Europe.

Utd's defensive setup is mostly outdated too. The only reason it works vs Liverpool and people act like it's a masterclass keeping out their apparent free flowing front 3 continually is because Liverpool have no actual creators. Mourinho's style is to block the channels and paths, shut out the dangermen in the final third. He does this whatever the opposition. It works if teams lack someone who can pick a pass. If a team as a De Bruyne type who can pick a pass from deep it completely fails as Mourinho's strategy puts zero pressure on the ball holder, so it will give 10 yards of space to someone who drops deep to pick up the ball.

Report n88uk March 13, 2018 10:35 PM GMT
Mourinho's set up often totally gets overrun in midfield too.

Report n88uk March 13, 2018 10:57 PM GMT
Difference is most those teams went out dying on their sword or there were other reasons. Eg. Porto they were robbed by an awful offside ruling out a goal like a yard onside.

Also the opposition in those was better than this Sevilla side which is bang average.

Utd add up to less than the sum of their parts.
Report betting_masta March 13, 2018 10:58 PM GMT
the club is only rich because of the fans, and they've let their fans down. their fans are disappointed. they didn't put in a level of performance that was worthy of their status.
Report lurka March 13, 2018 10:59 PM GMT
United's defence is only 'good' because he has the whole midfield protecting them. He doesn't rate his own defence, he knows it's weak. Bailly is supposed to be their best CH but was awful tonight. Smalling is useless and he has two wingers at full back, who aren't allowed to go forward much.

Mourinho's defensive style has been taken over by the more open attacking and pressing style. Yes, he can get the better of teams that play like that by being defensive and picking off their weaknesses, but only when he has a team of top players with top attackers in it too, over the course of a season. Those teams have found a way to get the most out of their attacking players and still be very effective defensively. Mourinho's teams only have the latter.

I'd say the likes of Pogba and Sanchez will want him gone and won't give 100% for him.

if your defence is sh*t, you tackle it by being more attacking. sounds counterintuitive but you can't rely on a dodgy defence. problem is, mourinho has always been a defensive manager, and you can't teach an old dog new tricks
Report n88uk March 13, 2018 11:43 PM GMT
Mourinho's defensive style also generally very weak vs possession style play. Often totally concedes possession and the middle of the park. It's on a principle of the team with the ball will make mistakes to counter, but better teams using this style generally don't these days.

You can see with stuff like full backs, Mourinho doesn't see them as offensive weapons at all that most managers too, they barely attack under him. Tonight even at the end, full backs barely get forward. First leg don't think they crossed the half way line.

Strange selection of players , as well as TACTICS adopted 1st half.

POGBA - On bench was a good thing IMO.....a much overrated player! He just is so SLOW in thought...a bad passer forward ( usually sideways !!). Gave ball away when he came on 2nd half...Buying him is a major mistake !

SANCHEZ- Was a top player with ARSENAL......looks well out of sorts, but IMO he is a good buy and had an ok game last night.

RASHFORD  - Played him on right side a lot in  game......whereas he inflicted most damage on left side, cutting in  and using his stronger right foot!

FELLANI - Just is not IMO "match fot". He just looks like carrying an injury.....and mobility poor. Really surprised he was in team last night. Strange decision.

MATIC - Definitely "off the boil" last few months.....Strange again, as he is a very good player.

FIRST HALF TACTICS

Really should have been flat out to go 1 goal up..........instead the fear factor re AWAY goal was ever present. HE WHO HESITATES IS LOST......is true in football generally!

Lack of pace first half and slow going forward due to sideways passing. This is down to coach in player selection and tactics.

Perhaps they put too much into game v LIVERPOOL........getting carried away with their good start in game ....led to a pretty jaded performance 1st half last night.
==========================================================================

Very STRANGE the whole game.......
