This is not cricket as I know it. Obviously if I’d stuck to my morning position I’d be well up for playing in the gloom and drizzle and generally they take the players off too soon but I’m being carted out in a box here!

The thing about the radar - I find - is to discard the blue and only pay attention to orange/ red/ pink. Blue is often just drizzle, and in the modern era that is played in. Yes, it can force players off, but invariably they are back on again soon...just my take - I stuck to my convictions and pleased I did, cos at 8.30am I was looking at a largish loss...

It’s exaggerated by the match state though: sides in winning positions are much more on their mettle in the field because of the situation. Once you’re down in the field, you stop caring so much.

When first thing you do in a test is lose 2 wickets in a few overs, under leaden skies, then another in a micro session and end up all out for just over 100, you’d need a lot of mental strength not to play like the fates have been against you.

I really ought to have gone green in the low 5s earlier but it looked to me like they’d come off, which would have seen the draw drop to the 4s somewhere. Given that as always, I felt the draw far more unlikely than the market, it’s amazing that I’ve lost a packet on a result again. I need to have stern words with myself. Oh jucel! Bet you did what I did and tried to trade the rain that never quite did enough to take them off. Amazing thing is that my break even after chasing draw to small red on the first wicket thinking they were off any moment and hard on the second wicket and rumours (which I felt were overblown) of a resumption, I had my break even at 6 and actually got rid of some there and lots down to the low 5s. I could have taken a plausible green but again believed too much in the rain / the umps not being Big Sue and then, which was shocking, I chased up again having got my red down to £2.3k. So a day I went into with £4K result green and a belief that I might have to sit on some painful looking odds for my day 5 pay off, instead lost me near £5k on England winning, which I knew was the outcome from the moment the 5th wicket fell on day 2. Fck it! At least I won a bit on rain last night and football today and it keeps the super PC at bay for a bit longer but wow, what a shower.

Odd couple of games for him but didn’t even get to be specialist dismisser of Ishant can’t pick the googly to save his life Sharma this time. Still, hardly his fault but I think the rationale that led England’s selectors to prefer Moeen at home still applies, albeit that Woakes at 7 was hardly a bad choice. The guy is far too good a batsman for 8 but then we’ve batted Moeen there too, in the not too distant past.

I know not to trade day 5s much, or an obvious final day, day 3 or 4 (I don’t always pay attention to what I know but that’s another story) but I’m far less sure how many of my bets today were bad. Definitely the final few chasing the draw up on 3rd wicket were horrible beyond belief but think trying to trade the rain was fair enough. Enough rain actually fell for that to have been a big winner, the umps just played on.

Report BigMig August 12, 2018 10:54 PM BST
The weather lady (Helen Willetts) said on TMS before play that rain would arrive shortly and further play was unlikely. The radar also suggested lengthy interruptions.

Guess a few of us got stung by that even though it was obvious England would ultimately win (although, we thought, not until day five!).

Was funny how everyone was going after Root for declaring. And the game was over on day 4. I see some people lost waiting for rain, you have to ask yourself, were the first two days not enough? Today's rain play was risky and i'm glad I wasn't home to trade that. I ended up winning a hundred on the runline and 150 on match odds. Like I usually do, I've already wasted 80% of that on the golf.

i think the biggest thing to take from this test is that even with virtually the whole of the first two days rained off and quite a bit of day 4, it never ever looked like it would be a draw. this is a sad indictment on test cricket, as it proves that there are not any teams out there who are capable of grinding it out and batting long periods. this is good from a betting point of view, i suppose, as just laying the draw at some point will be profitable. But overall it dissapoints  me, i love this game, and i think it is dying.

The crazy thing is the pitches haven't even been doctored to aid our bowlers. It's the ball that has been doing magical things. The amount of swing for long periods of time has been amazing.
The Indian's batting has been poor but it can't be easy when the ball is hooping both ways over after over.
Report jucel69 August 13, 2018 4:00 AM BST
There was a concern they would have to rotate bowlers due to the grueling schedule.
They won't need to now & there's no way on god's earth that Broad/Anderson will want to miss Trent Bridge.
I can't see myself opposing England for the rest of the series.
It's going to be hard to make any decent cash on the remaining games, unless there is rain again.
England will be sub 2s and loads of market love + Kholi's injury
Market is just opening, be interesting to see the prices

Always look for an angle me!

England were 80-7 odd last match and could easily have lost if the sun came out. If India had won this toss the game may have been different.

I am not saying the Indian batting has not been as effective as an Italian Infantry Batallion but they could just as easily win the next match. Again a favourable toss or lucky on the weather and the situation could easily reverse

We all knew the team winning the toss here would be the likely winners. It was not rocket science and still most of us managed to lose large greens wtf!

Note to self.......keep it simple, take what winnings the match offers and don't go looking for what isn't there and finally  if the the King has no clothes on don't be afraid to call it. Lessons in the bleed in' obvious!

Eng will be 1.45 when they win the toss. 1.35 if they don't lose the customary early wicket. 1.5 if they are 30-3. If India bat first, their first target should be to either bat out more than 18 overs or cross 60 runs mark, whichever comes first.

I learnt the lesson of not laying England the hard way. I would rather skip the game than try making money laying England against a subcontinent side. Because if you don't bet, you can't lose.

Report Fatslogger August 13, 2018 9:19 PM BST
I’m not usually a big believer in within series momentum, especially in favour of a very inconsistent England side (lots of home tests lost, although not series) but right now it does seem very hard to believe in an Indian win at Trent Bridge. The England batting looks better for Pope, Woakes and Curran being in it and unlike India’s batting, there are quite a few guys you’d think would rate to make runs at least a decent proportion of the time. Even Cook and Jennings might not be total busts all series. With India, while the sample sizes aren’t huge and I do rather rate Rahane and Pujara, the records of all bar Kohli outside the subcontinent are poor. You’ve also got to think that the England pace bowling will continue to outperform the admittedly pretty decent Indian pace. That means you’ve got an awful lot on Ashwin if you lay England and TB isn’t usually very spin friendly.

Other thing is that you can happily wait for England to be 50/3 and still lay at odds on with market love likely to persist.
