William Hill offering 7/1 that Bairstow and Marsh both hit a maximum.Spot of value imo in what should be another run fest at O/T.

Someone out there, or possibly several people, really seem to want to back England to win tosses at 1.98. Won another £1.5k less commission this game. Started with England lay although didn’t do it early enough so only got 1.51 and sold most of it off a bit early. Keeping the last £250 for a bit, I think. England to chase upwards of 340 successfully on this, is my prediction.
Report Fatslogger June 24, 2018 11:23 AM BST
I think they’ll get plenty here but am a little wary of backing high on run lines as the batting is rather patchy after the openers and Marsh. In fact, Finch is the only one you’d really call a proven performer.
Report Fatslogger June 24, 2018 11:30 AM BST
Glad I’d got most of it off now. Back in but high chance of an Aussie fizzle now, I’d say.

Report Fatslogger June 24, 2018 11:34 AM BST
Terrible couple of shots, weren’t they? I appreciate it’s worth attacking but its 50 overs, not 20. You don’t have to murder absolutely everything and pulling a not short ball that doesn’t need to turn to be on the stumps and sweeping so early both feel like low percentage efforts.
Report Fatslogger June 24, 2018 11:35 AM BST
Anyway, gone in bigger on Aus now but with England shortening as we go, leaves me nominally flat, despite some nice early trading.
Report GRANTCKING June 24, 2018 11:36 AM BST
come on marsh give me a 66666666
Report Fatslogger June 24, 2018 11:38 AM BST
Really tempted to take more lays on as they shorten but I don’t like it for more than a trade, as I think this is now a pretty even match state and England a much, much better ODI side. I don’t normally believe in there being much of a disparity in quality between serious cricket nations in limited overs but this series is an obvious exception.
Report Fatslogger June 24, 2018 11:39 AM BST
Also, as a trade, what needs to happen to move the price a decent way? Probably a bit more proper damage. A few quiet overs with the odd 4 won’t do it.

400 odd runs for 3 times out since coming back from the IPL. must be in the top 2 or 3 ODI players in the world
Report Fatslogger June 24, 2018 8:32 PM BST
Oddly the ODI ratings don’t especially have Jos very high and generally haven’t done, despite his outrageous stats, especially his SR. I don’t think the algorithm is correct and probably undervalues both SR and non top 3 batsmen.
Report mafeking June 24, 2018 9:05 PM BST
the rankings are nonsense and clearly overrate volume of runs and underrate strike rate. england wouldn't blink an eye if joe root was missing but buttler would leave a huge hole in the side

he averages 40 and has a strike rate of around 120. no one in the entire history of ODI cricket combines such a high average with that phenomenal strike rate. most of the others significantly above 100 are lower order sloggers and have done it from a small number of games

Yep, he’s a phenomenon. Afridi managed over 100 but at a poor average. Otherwise, even recently, yes, nobody can compare.

Root is a guy who, like Morgan actually, would have looked like one of our best ever ODI players as recently as 3-4 years ago but yes, is now a relatively marginal pick I’d not mind Stokes coming back for, whereas I’d be really grumpy if any of the current top 3 made way and obviously Buttler is awesome.

Report detraveller June 24, 2018 11:28 PM BST
How can you guys forget ABD who has a 100+ career strike rate at an average of 53 for the whole fking career???

Also, the ICC hasn't updated the rankings since March. So calm down. They usually take 12 hours to update the rankings after each series.

The current number one ODI player has scored 550+ runs in just 6 matches at an avg of 186 and a SR of almost 100. Jos has almost the same amount of runs(about 20 more) but just under half of them have come in this series, which isn't reflected in the ranking.

He'll get the spot. Just wait for the update. ABD will go out too so that's one spot gone. Plus the two cheating conts haven't played any cricket(do they get kicked out of ranking coz of suspension? I guess not).  In fact hardly anyone has played any cricket due to the IPL so Jos the Boss gets right into the top 5 when you wake up tomorrow.
Report detraveller June 24, 2018 11:32 PM BST
I was just on the phone with the ICC, they say he's 2nd in the updated rankings but the rankings will only be published tomorrow. That's quite a jump well done Jos Butler you the man.
Report mafeking June 25, 2018 12:44 AM BST
with due respect to ABDV there's a lot of players with a strike rate around 100. i was looking specifically at the handful of players with a strike rate of like 110 and above

ABDV certainly has by far the best average/strike rate combo amongst batsmen who played most of the time in the top 5
Report jucel69 June 25, 2018 4:31 AM BST

Report detraveller June 25, 2018 11:09 AM BST
The rankings have been updated and he is 16th!

Probably didn't get much credit for his runs this series as its against the 6th ranked side in the world, at home.
Report Fatslogger June 25, 2018 12:47 PM BST
The point about the rankings and Jos is that he’s been roughly this good for ages and never been appropriately highly rated. Multiplying average and SR together would be a better measure, I think.

Fine work and lol jucel. I got stuck on Aus having had a few okay trades early on and was very pleasantly surprised to be able to go green with England 4 down. I then had a frivolous extra tickle on England at 6.4 when 8 down, as Rashid is actually quite a plausible batsman and Ball by no means awful. Yesterday was a very decent day for me, in fact, except that my several lays of Harry Kane for the golden boot look rather at risk.
Report mafeking June 25, 2018 2:26 PM BST
in the last year (27 matches) he has 801 runs at an average of 61 and strike rate of 115. they're can't be 5 players with a record anything like that let alone 15

it's farcical he's so lowly ranked. he's being downgraded by england's top 4 also being absolutely stellar. says it all that yday the first time he'd batted more than 100 balls. unless we have one of our spectacular collapses he's rarely coming in before the last 20 overs
Report detraveller June 25, 2018 9:55 PM BST
Yeah that does sound like a great record. Do we know what factors ICC considers? I know the quality of the opposition is a factor. Don't know who he has played but 10 of those should be against aus?

To hell with the rankings though. He's a great player and i am glad he has performed in a tight game instead of just spanking the ball around and failing when under pressure like most of the rest.
Report Fatslogger June 26, 2018 9:28 PM BST
They aren’t as clear on the ODI ratings as tests. They do say they account for SR but I can’t believe they do so enough as Jos is GOAT on SR and yet never troubles the top 10 despite also having a very decent average. They correct for quality of opposition bowlers as measured by their own ratings (clearly poor for Aus this series) and for how good the pitch is, as judged by total runs scored in the game. There isn’t much of a not out bonus, certainly when setting and possible when chasing too, unlike in averages. They must over rate total weight of runs, which you can sort of see but no way on earth Root is a better ODI batsman than Jos. He’s not even close to being close, for me.
Report Fatslogger June 26, 2018 9:37 PM BST
I haven’t actually run the numbers for England’s other ODI batsmen in the last year but they’ll mostly be absurd too.  Interestingly, Root and Bairstow are both above Jos and Roy a little below. Missing games hurts your rating a bit so none of the top 3 will be as high as they ought to be if they’d played solidly for the last couple of years.
Report mafeking June 26, 2018 10:46 PM BST
yeah bairstow's record in the last year which has gone under the radar a bit is absolutely amazing

having a quick look at the figures the top 5 in terms of average and strike rate are clearly kohli, sharma, dhawan, bairstow and buttler. all average above 55 (kohli 96!) with a strike rate of around 100 or more
