York has the Mallard. Ones that actually move would be good. Any suggestions appreciated.

Good stuff. Appreciate it.

I still remember when the Flying Scotsman came to Australia. 1988.

Flying Scotsman set a world distance record for a steam train when it was on OZ.....that still stands.
Report blackbarn July 6, 2018 3:07 PM BST
settle to carlisle wants some beating for scenery but you need to make sure that steam is on, as it is a regular line.

In my part of the world (Sussex) the Bluebell Railway is lovely, and they do lots of specials - Kids, afternoon tea, evening meals, Jazz lunches etc etc.

The Flying Scotsman  is running on the East Lancs line again later this year....... the most famous steam locomotive on the planet .......I shall be having another go.

I remember train spotting as a kid. All those fantastic steam trains.
One day I spotted LMS No 46220 ''Coronation'' at Crewe. I thought I'd bagged the crown jewels.

Llangollen - very attractive line to Corwen running close by the River Dee. And dive, or even drive(!) over the Horseshoe Pass after that for a memorable view.  Not for vertigo sufferers!
Report Jack Hacksaw July 7, 2018 12:05 PM BST
No expert on steam trains, but the Severn Valley is a very picturesque line.  Plenty of pubs at either end of the line and en-route.

Most lines will probably run one steam and one diesel unit each day, so you will only probably see one steam train.

Yes Jack, I've spent the day fishing near to this bridge on the Severn many times.

There's the swanage railway in dorset that goes past Corfe Castle. (bit of a fixer-upper that).

Dorset would be good. Definitely going there for the Tank Museum. Only thing better than steam locomotives and classic cars is Panzers.

Bluebell Railway, Sussex. Check out the 'Ale Train' which runs 4 times a year I think. Great fun. Local ales at stations and on the train. £2.50 a pint!!! Sausage and Mash at Sheffield Park (a station up the line). Brass band when you get back to Horsted Keynes.

Incredibly, Horsted Keynes, a rural village, has 4 platforms. Gives you some idea how important railways were back in the day.

Plenty of Engines to see in the Sheffield Park sheds. Giant engines. Engineering at its finest.

Reynard's comments re the NYMR are correct. For a top day out take the bus from York to Whitby (voted most scenic in UK) and then get the steam train to Pickering. Lovely old stations, places for a refresher and fish and chips back in Whitby.

Kamikaze the monkey world featured on TV is about 4 miles away from Bovington (Tank Museum), if you'd like to see chimps etc.

Been on the one to Bodiam which indeed does have the castle.

Also one from Paignton down to Dartmouth.

Severn Valley defo the best.

I live in the vicinity btw and feel very fortunate in that regard.

Jack I've spent many a night in the Valencia pub on the opposite side river to the railway.
Camped in the field between the railway station and the river when I were kid.
And drank in the Harbour pub near the railway station.
Also the Red Lion on the Kidderminster to Bridgnorth road where they served cider.

I remember using the ferry at Arley as well. Lovely area.

great central railway as well loughboro to leicester   plenty of steam engines.
Report Jack Hacksaw July 10, 2018 4:44 PM BST
With all the dry weather, it is worth checking with any lines that they are running steam as some may not be due to line side fires.
