Been thinking about this for a long time and feel its got to that stage where i should give up the demon booze.

I am fed up with the 3 day hangovers and spending a fortune when i am out. Also the biggest factor for me is the depression after drinking. It has got worse these past few months. I want to give up altogether. I cannot drink in moderation as it always turns into a 2/3 day binge.

Has anyone else gave up booze altogther? Any advice would be appreciated

Do wah - what age did you stop drinking and what did you do to replace the drink? I blacked out on sat nite. Its happening more and more often and it scares me. Its day 1 off the booze for me. My body aches but I am clear in my mind that I want to stop. The test for me is the weekends. Just hope I am strong enough to stay off it

Definitely see your GP asap. I'm no expert on the subject but I have read that alcohol withdrawal can be extremely dangerous, even fatal (as History Maker says).

GL Kal.

If you decide cutting down is an option instead of giving up then I'll describe my system (everybody slates it but it works very well for me).

Everybody's different though, so best of luck with whatever you decide to do. I guess it all boils down to willpower in the end and you just have to decide what kind of system your willpower can handle best. Quite possibly for you it's abstinence.

I never really had a "problem" but I was probably drinking more than was good for my health.

I realised I was getting too old for that kind of lifestyle (I was about 32) and decided I was going to give up "stupid" drinking and have just drunk in moderation ever since.

I'm not saying that this is right for you but what I did which may be relevant to you, is find myself a different cirlce of friends and develop new interests.

same here stan , i used to cane the booze every day and every night. if i had missed a sat or sun lunch session i would be distraught or any session come to that , then i just seemed to cut it out slowly but surely without even trying and i wouldnt give a gold pig for it now. it wasnt as though i said to myself i must stop it just sort of happened ,strange really. not bothered about it at all now , still have a drink socially but can then leave it for a month easily or more than that , im as happy to drink 3 pints and be satisfied these days
Report Kal84 May 8, 2012 9:54 PM BST
Fair play to you Stan - Was there a reason why you decided to stop? Did you feel you had to replace the drinking with someone else?

Report john92 May 8, 2012 10:11 PM BST
With a change of mindset do you think you could drink more sensibly? I had developed bad habits when I was drinking and knew I had to change. Once it sank in it has been easy enough to keep drinking but be more responsible. I'm not far into that plan right enough but I'm confident.

Drinking is a huge part of Scottish culture. It is hard to stop and it's hard to avoid. I admit I have thought about stopping altogether but I'm also worried about how I would socialise, which sounds terrible when you say it.

Who you are drinking with makes a big difference aswell. One of my mates drinks pints all night. When I'm sick of pints and go onto jd, it means I drink slower which means I don't get as wrecked when I'm drinking with him.
Report Kal84 May 8, 2012 10:40 PM BST
i'm a fellow scotsman too John. You are correct drinking is huge part of Scottish culture.

I maybe could drink more sensibly but want to just refrain and clear my head. I do want to be able to go out for a few without grtting smashed. Then again on the other hand i would love to stop altogther.

Maybe i will find that happy medium at some stage

If you stopped drinking John would you still socialise with the same people?

That is a good question. I don't have many aquaintances. Im either really good friends with people or don't bother. Nothing inbetween so I think I would.

I do have one mate that I went to school with. He went to the RAF, I went to uni, never really saw much of him for years then became good friends again around 4 years ago. I can honestly say that every single time I have met up with him in those 4 years, drink has been involved. We have never socialised sober.

He is good company, dunno why we go on like that. Just habit maybe.

Out of interest what do you drink?

Turning point was a few sessions ago. Rushed out without proper dinner, got there and they were drinking bottles of lager, when I would have bigger bottles of cider which is my choice atm. Then the shots started, which I would never suggest doing. Then the shots kept coming, then god knows what happened.

I realised the next day that I had to show more willpower and drink what I wanted and not go along with the flow. Who gives a **** if it ****s up the round? Crazy mixing had to stop. I should drink what I want and what I'm comfortable drinking.

Once I made that desicion I felt better for it and have been able to stick to it thus far.

Saying all this I ordered some high quality bourbon online earlier, it should be here on Friday haha

Kal84- I'm ten years sober and it was the best decision I ever made, saved my relationship with my now wife. I replaced drinking with golf, the money you spend on kit and membership fees doesn't even scratch the amount of money you can piss up the wall in a single year.

Vodka is not good for me either. I don't touch it anymore. Once I decided to avoid it, staying off it wasn't a problem.

If I got hangovers I would give quitting completely more serious thought, but I don't. Luckliy. Or unluckily, whatever way you look at it. I do like a drink though. I have to admit that, so I'm not sure I'd want to give up altogether.

I like to keep in decent shape so a heavy session stops me doing much running for a couple of days, even though I'm not really hungover as such. This helps keep my drinking in check.

You seem to have reached a turning point and are serious that changes have to be made. Once that sinks in I'm sure you will find you have more willpower than you think.

BIsh Bosher - Why do you chose not to drink? Have you replaced the drink with something else?

As i said I was never a drinker anyway; used to be a Shandy drinker; the reason I packed the drink in totally was to help my mam who was diagnosed with Diabetes; as my grandma had it as well i decided it may well be hereditary so i decided to live a healthier lifestyle; never replaced the money i saved with anything else but went on about dozen holidays including Vegas twice Love; loved the casinos & got a mortgage as well; many people tried to get me drunk but no one succeeded; as i say it's all down to will power; good luck if you decide to do it

Someone (Dean Martin I think) once said that he felt sorry for people who don't drink, as when they get up, that is the best they will feel all day.

Best thing is just moderation, ie only drink half of the time!

I stop drinking every day without fail. It just needs a little discipline that's all.

Give up when you go to bed and don't touch a drop till after midday.

should invest in some Milk Thistle Smithy.

5 days solid drinkin in Benidorm sounds brilliant. The Scotsman Bar and The Hippodrome are highly recommended
