hi guys cant see any threads about this fella so i will start one , have not  been so  focused on the horses for the last few years ,various distractions have took their toll and not put the time in and had my eye off the ball so to speak and this years festival was  bit of a blur ,anyway although mite bite is no dark horse  and around 2nd fav for the gold cup i think there is still  a bit of juice in the price at around 7s on here and 6s in the shops .
my first initial thought when considering him was "is he a bit quirky " after his rsa win when he surrendered a big lead in the final stages veering sharply right and seemingly handing the race to stablemate whisper ,ran out of petrol were my initial thoughts but the jockey straitened him out and he stayed on as brave as a lion and got back up on the line  so clearly stamina is not a problem nor attitude . on watching countless reruns of his aintree, rsa and feltham runs what struck me was his amazing cruising speed looking at him leading in his races he does not  seem to be going that fast  but when you look in behind it becomes apparant that he is taking a lot of the others out of their comfort zone and they are going a stride or two faster than they want to which leads to them making mistakes i.e  meeting fences quicker than they are able to deal with while this fella jumps for fun (barring the blip at the last in the feltham )............  last seasons novice chasers look to be a decent bunch both in the staying and 2m departments as recent events have shown ....whisper has  franked the rsa and aintree form and come out and giving weight to a ridiculously well handicaped mullins horse total recall and after looking all over the winner just  got chinned in a photo in the hennesey  so the form looks solid  .............reigning champ sizing john has done nothing wrong and will be hard to beat but of the 2 i am with the hendo horse who should have room for plenty of improvement ,and if he wins the king george then his price should  shorten,be interesting to see how fellow front runner bristol de mai gets on if as expected these 2 take each other on from the front ......SELECTION MITE BITE 7S ON HERE 6/1 IN SHOPS GOLD CUP ....good luck ............ as ever input and opinions welcome !

Yep, have to agree.
Don't really like using the description....but hes a monster!!
Sort of horse that simply gets one very excited.
Would not surpise me one bit if he does a Gold Cup performance like Denman did.
Do respect the current champ though,he is very good.

Might Bite would be my choice for the Gold Cup if it was over 3m. As it is not the King George Chase is just up his street - my choice even if Sizing John turns up; he could even start evens or shorter if Thistlecrack and/or Sizing John are absentees. The rest including Djakadam and Douvan - show or not - are running for a place, all things being equal.

Totally agree Foyles. Was my idea of a GC winner after his RSA win. I am on at 7 and looking forward to hopefully watch him run in the KG on Boxing Day.

thought he did it well today ,improvement to come  jumped well and had  worldhurdle/king george /feltham/betfair bowl /melling chase winners well behind ,some crabbing the race over the proximity of double shuffle but asd another poster pointed out mite bite had 2 races today burning off bdm and then having enough in reserve to see off the closers trying to pick up the pieces .
Report duffy December 26, 2017 9:54 PM GMT
Couldn't fancy him for a GC myself, but I couldn't before today either, in truth today's was a poor KG, Thistlecrack must be a stone worse horse this year.

Henderson has worked his magic on mite bite, the horse looks a different animal to last year, won easy today, more chance of it getting the gold cup now imo
Report wellchief December 27, 2017 10:29 AM GMT
Agree with Duffy, couldn't believe the superlatives spoken about him/the race on itv afterwards.

He won a decent King George by a length, where BDM is clearly not the same horse away from Haydock, Thistlecrack nowhere near the same and Whispers weight carrying performance last time taking his toll.

Just makes my view the the GC winner will come from Ireland even stronger.

He is a good horse Might Bite, but Cheltenham will suit less and opposition will be stronger.
Report buddeliea December 27, 2017 12:34 PM GMT
Bit harsh imo.
That ground was plenty soft enough for Might Bite, yet all through the race he jumped super and hardly touched a twig.
Going through the form book, better ground should see him at his best.
Whether Sizing John is simply a better horse only time will tell, but nothing I saw yesterday would put me off Might Bite.

When Matter of Time starts running (which she only has 4 opportunities to get into a maiden this month to get capped) and if she wins a race before March i fully intend lumping on! That was a monster performance yesterday, to burn em off on the first circuit and then to outstay Double Shuffle like that who imho was fully entitled to be that close to winning after the gallop he went all the way round, he really only has one to worry about in the cgc, albeit it is a sizeable one Crazy

The ground was soft enough for BDM imo and he was beat after the first circuit, has Thistlecrack ever been that goodConfused Whisper obviously feeling the effects of carrying that weight last time with the evidence of yesterday and his RSA win i'm almost all in, well as all in as STS can be anyways cos i never let one ride pmsl but you guys know what i mean, he's my jackpot in the race for sure!!

I wouldn't be surprised if MB didn't start favourite Wink

On other thoughts, anyone thought about possible improvement from Our Duke?

Road to Respect on an upward curve. I was toying last year backing him at three figure odds for this but was unsure whether he'd be their Ryanair horse, kicking myself now.

Sizing John being 'distressed' and 'clinically abnormal' after the race; really hope he can come back.

Despite the fact I still don't fancy him, Might Bite is now deserved favourite.

Yorkhill and Djakadam won't be winning this imo, Coney Island and Disko are young unexposed improvers who may have a big say too.

Also if Whisper is given a good break he always finishes in the money at Cheltenham so can't be completely discounted.

Still an interesting renewal despite Yorkhill and SJ today.
Report duffy December 28, 2017 5:15 PM GMT
I'd be sticking with SJ, in the light of him being "clinically abnormal" after the race I think he deserves plenty of credit, he was obviously always at it right through the race today but still looked with 3 to jump as if he might just get back into it, we've seen what he can do in a GC and back on better ground if fit he'd still be the one for me.
Report FOYLESWAR December 28, 2017 5:21 PM GMT
yes todays result has stirred up the hornets nest , it has certainly opened it up more, and some would be  ryanaire probables may now be thinking of changing tack .
Report impossible123 December 28, 2017 5:37 PM GMT
I think the frequency of runs by Sizing John has finally caught up with him especially on yielding ground - he was pulled-out of the Betfair Chase on similar ground, I believe; the proximity of his last run on heavy ground did not help either. Let's hope he is sound, and goes straight to the Festival with/out a run to defend his crown. I agree that any aspiration of winning the Gold Cup with Yorkhill has been extinguished post the Lexus - he was back-pedalling post the 3rd last fence.

If any consolation for backers/supporters of Sizing John Don Cossack fell in the King George but won the Gold Cup at Cheltenham at a bigger price too (8/1 from 4/1).

seems mite bite has an official rating of 169 after his king george win fair enough on the face of it!, i think the horse is better going left handed and the undulations at cheltenham suit him better than flatish tracks , but it must be hard for the assesors  to get a handle on him as he seems to idle and do just enough so to me he could be a fair few pounds better than his rating  ,also seemed they were wary of the  soft going at kempton and held onto him noticably. good spring ground should see a similar performance to his rsa win and hendo should have worked out a plan what to do after the last on the run up  the hill .
Report impossible123 January 3, 2018 5:26 PM GMT
I'm encouraged most pundits do not rate his Kempton win and/or his fav position in the Gold Cup market. Nothing beats a horse that represents value on the day given proven form. Similarly, Sizing John,...what a double bonus for the New Year; every little helps, may I add.
Report impossible123 January 3, 2018 5:55 PM GMT
Harrington has confirmed all blood tests came back normal so the Gold Cup is very much the aim. She reckoned the John Durkan (heavy ground) could have taken more out of him, and Djakadam which could explain their lacklustre performance in the Lexus.

I don't think he would get away with those RSA antics in a Gold Cup but he may be well clear going to the last so the easy solution is to lay off at 1.4 or lower in running. The gate to the paddock will still be before the winning post so beware.

In March 2017 I watched the Brian Ellison runner Definitely Red win the Grimthorpe by 14 lengths at Doncaster over 3m2f - that day I convinced myself that he was more than just an out and out stayer and that i would back him in any top graded chase if at a decent value price.

My confidence was knocked a bit when only coming 3rd in the Charlie Hall - but after some reflection I stuck to my initial thoughts after that Grimthorpe i.e that he would show his best at 3m2f+ on a track that required some getting and run at a faster pace. So i just kept backing him at silly prices for the Gold Cup

His next run at Aintree in the Many Clouds Chase in December was run in atrocious conditions , he made the pace that day and i thought he was cooked 2f out as Cloudy Dream was seemingly travelling all over him .... but he picked up again and went away.  For days after that race i was trying to work out if either Definitely Red had just put in a massive Grade 1 class performance in tough staying conditions and making Cloudy Dream & Flying Angel look like a hcappers , or was it simply down to the heavy going. I Just wasnt sure but i just kept backing him for the Gold Cup and to hell the consequences.

His next run in the Cotswold , again in very soft conditions , has now shown his ability at travelling around there and jumping at a fast pace - they were really going some  pace from 4 out and he hammered them whilst swishing his tail on the run in . He was backed down to 80s on the exchanges and 50s with the books before the race , and 25s in a place straight after.

So after nearly a year since the Grimthorpe it looks like he will be taking his chance in the Gold Cup - Im now asking myself several questions pertaining to his chances in the Gold Cup.

1.Is he simply reliant on heavy ground to beat assumed classier horses ...or is he the class horse that ive been convincing myself of since the Grimthorpe and is still being underrated ?

I think the majority would say, based on the formbook,  that he needs it heavy to have any chance in the Gold Cup - If the ground did come up soft then i am personally convinced that he does not come out of first 3 bar a fall - but my personal view is that he is better than that. Ellison has also come out and  said that he thinks Red will be better on good ground - ITV presenter asked him Is soft ground key to him ?   Ellison " No, He has won on good ground , i think he will be better on good ground because he is not short of speed you know , as long as its not tacky because he is such a lovely mover, but he can go on heavy ". Im not totally convinced on the suitability of ground - but as i say i think he has progressed into a perfect Gold Cup horse

2.Is there a chance that he could actually stay the trip better than Might Bite and Sizing John , and does he have the class to match them and some of the other leading fancies ?

"Class" is talked about too much imo when it comes to the Gold Cup - if you just look at the last 10-15 years of the Gold Cup there are several horses that have been placed in the race that most would have identified as horses as more of a National Type and lacked class. I actually think that Definitly Red is not only better than that pigeon hole that many would put him into , i actually believe that he progressed into a high class animal whose 3m2f+ performances will actually exceed past horses who many would believe to be classier horses.

I dont think last years Gold Cup was that impressive  - Minella Rocco got within 2 lengths of Sizing John on good ground

1st            Sizing John    11-10    R M Power    Mrs J Harrington    7    7/1
Held up in rear early, closed into mid-division 5th, effort after 4 out, challenged 2 out, soon led, stayed on well flat, ridden out opened 7/1 touched 7/1
2nd        2¾    Minella Rocco (IRE)    11-10    N D Fehily    Jonjo O'Neill    7    18/1
Held up in rear, outpaced after 3 out, rallied last, soon went 4th, stayed on well flat, went 2nd post, no impression on winner opened 16/1 touched 20/1
3rd        s.h    Native River (IRE)    11-10    R Johnson    C L Tizzard    7    7/2
Prominent, led 3rd, headed 7th, led 15th, not fluent 4 out, ridden and headed 2 out, stayed on under pressure flat but no impression on winner, went 2nd towards finish, lost 2nd post opened 9/2 touched 9/2
4th        ½    Djakadam (FR)    11-10    R Walsh    W P Mullins    8    3/1f

I also think Might Bite is there to be shot at in a fast run race over 3m2f - but i wouldn't lay Might Bite i would Sizing John and Native River .

I’m a fan of the horse Rozel and being a Northerner myself, would love to see him win.
My worry is that, although I’m sure Ellison is right and that he will go on good ground, I think heavy ground inconveniences other horses more. So they are notably better on decent ground, whereas this fella may not be.
I agree that he is overlooked and in an open year certainly has the class to be in the hunt for a place, along with probably half a dozen others. He will be in my forecast/tricast combination for sure.
Good luck with your bet

Sizing John has only run one bad race (Lexus) since up in trip; he won 3 Gold Cups, and is underrated, I believe. Might Bite could still be improving, and if running to his RSA form he'd have an excellent chance of beating the field, I think.

Definitely Red looked good in his last win, but the form still needs convincing. But the Lexus, I cannot give much credence to.

Despite being a massive Might Bite fan (to claify I mean in terms of this year's GC), I have to have a back up.

Decided upon Road to Respect, that despite not respecting his Lexus win at the time. He's been solid this year to be fair and has course form in the bag, which is always valuable.

Whether he'll stay the extra two I don't know and I'm not really that fussed as I'm sure Might Bite will have won by several furlongs (this is a joke) before it becomes an issue. However think he's one to have inside and has disappeared off the radar a bit. Happy with 10/1 NRNB.
Report buddeliea February 11, 2018 6:58 AM GMT
Native River has now proved his well being and is bang there in the Gold Cup picture.Has to have a fair chance and is a fair price at 13/2 imo.
I have a nice double on Buveur Dair and Might Bite from early season, and have tried to cover Might Bite with NR going in some multiples.
My fear for NR,and indeed a horse i have backed Definitly Red is that they like to lay up with the pace, and i have this feeling that off the pace is where to be in a race that has Might Bite in it.
Thats why i have backed Rocco, doing what he did last year could win him the race if MB dont stay, and others that have took MB on are paying the price.
I do think MB will stay well enough, especially after watching the RSA again,to me that day proves he does, plus winning the KG the way he did also proves to me he does. But until he actually does do it over the Gold Cup distance it remains an opinion.
Report buddeliea February 11, 2018 7:16 AM GMT
Edwulf another that could benefit from lying off the pace, available at 30 odd on here.
Think the horse is being somewhat ignored, but nowt wrong with that performance last time, and worth a few bob at that price imo.
Report wellchief February 11, 2018 9:43 AM GMT
Very impressed with Native River - he is probably my selection for this race now.

It could be argued that the winning distance was exaggerated by Cloudy Dream doesn't stay 3m properly, so every yard after about 2.5m he was treading water; but Native River's ability to set a relentless end to end gallop is a great sight.  Slightly softer ground than last year would make him the one to beat imo.

I get the record of beaten horses the next year etc, but I think his layoff will have done him good.  Where the likes of Sizing John has had numerous really hard races since last years Gold Cup, as has Minella Rocco; Native River might not have the battle scars that most horses have when they run in the Gold Cup the next year (eg 3 or 4 really tough G1 3m chases between Gold Cups).

Turning for home, if Native River and Might Bite were upsides, I'd personally prefer to be on Native River in a battle up the hill.
Report buddeliea February 11, 2018 10:08 AM GMT
Yeh,i would not be too concerned about NR being a beaten horse last year, same with Rocco, they are both still relatively young horses.
Its a very fascinating race, and be very interesting to see the tactics during the race.
Report HaylingBilly February 11, 2018 10:28 AM GMT
Get where you are coming from and agree about the layoff being super beneficial BUT that "beaten horses" is a tough stat to ignore isn't it. And for that reason I have gone for three - Might Bite, Sizing John and Bacchasson as my wild card.
Report wellchief February 11, 2018 10:44 AM GMT
Yeah it is a powerful stat Billy, but for me it's balancing that stat vs he is more than double the price he was last year and looked just as good yesterday.  He is Mr Consistent, so you know you'll get a really good run for your money.  I'm hoping he can run the stamina out of Might Bite, of who I still have my stamina doubts about.

I love Sizing John, but after his last run and the amount of tough racing he's had in a short space of time is a big worry for me.  Might Bite's King George did nothing for me personally, and the quirks he has would push me to the likes of Native River or Road to Respect.

I think we can safely say Blaklion will not be running in Gold Cup after today. Will need 2-3 weeks rest after that.

I would be very nervous about any of the horses that finished their race at Haydock yesterday getting over it this season! Brutal conditions. The same thing could explain why Bristol de Mai has been poor since he won there earlier in the year.
