He may not have the 'sex appeal' of something trained by Mullins or Nicholls, but SUSSEX RANGER put up a very good performance today, giving weight and a sound beating to a couple of horses rated 90+ on the flat. The time of the race was decent and he looks to have a bit of scope for improvement too. The trainer seemed a bit conservative after the race, mentioning the Fred Winter as a likely target, but I suspect that once Phil Smith and the boys in Halifax have run their rule over today's run he might realise the horse is up to Triumph standard.

2pts win Sussex Ranger @ 33/1

I'm on We Have A Dream 20/1 win only for this, chucked £75 on before its race the other day
Report Mystic Wind December 23, 2017 5:44 PM GMT
It looks as though Sussex Ranger will be running in the Finale on the 27th - he's been installed as a short-priced fav in early books.

I believe Lydia Hislop reported that the trainer wasn't keen on Chepstow, on the basis that the horse needed a stiffer test/finish to be seen at his best.

Despite that, soft ground shouldn't be a concern so anything less than a very prominent showing (read 'win') will be disappointing.
Report Ibrahima Sonko December 23, 2017 9:06 PM GMT
Looks a shocking race at chester hopefully he wins easily.

The Henderson runner midweek looked good (style de garde) but it beat nowt.

Cromwell hoss wins the g2 at Leapardstown

Thought the 2nd making his debut showed a lot of promise

Could be ripples in the Triumph market later today - Sussex Ranger & We Have a Dream both running at 1.35...
Report unclepuncle January 6, 2018 2:07 PM GMT
Impressed by that - guess it's chance depends on whether they run Apples in the Mares novice race instead of the Triumph.
Report That is all January 6, 2018 6:20 PM GMT
Front 2 pulled well clear of the rest - agreed if turns up in the Triumph would have a decent chance from what’s on offer form wise so far!
Report Mystic Wind January 6, 2018 8:01 PM GMT
Obviously would have preferred a victory for SR today, but I think he lost little in defeat. He was pulling Jamie's arms out for the first mile, suggesting the pace wasn't strong enough. It therefore turned into a bit of a sprint and he got beaten by a horse with more natural speed. A bigger field, stronger pace and stiffer finish at Cheltenham would certainly suit him better and give him a chance of turning the tables on the winner.
Report Can't Catch Me January 7, 2018 12:51 PM GMT
I personally think NJH will he delighted as he knows Apples Shakira is in a different league to WHAD at home :)
Report ReaseHeath January 7, 2018 3:41 PM GMT
Is Apple's Shakira eligible for the Mare's Novice Hurdle? I can't see anything to suggest she would n't be but somebody else might know better.

Not saying it's likely but same CD as Triumph - although I'm assuming that any 4yo allowance would be more than offset by the fact that she's already won a Grade 2?
Report Can't Catch Me January 7, 2018 4:11 PM GMT
Yes she is RH and I definitely think it's an option for her.
Report shockster January 8, 2018 1:46 PM GMT
Apples Shakira is eligible for all the Novice races which makes her a dodgy proposition for betting especially when the owner has another good one in Espoir Dallen for the Triumph.  Would make sense for AS to run in the Mares and give JP 2 chances of winning?  Hendo also has We Have Dream so you can see why he'd go along with it also!!!!!

NRNB has to be the call.
Report Can't Catch Me January 8, 2018 1:51 PM GMT
This is exactly my worry. JP also has a few exciting juvenile recruits we havent seen yet like Demopolis.

And NJH also has Style de Garde who I thought looked potentially exciting first time up to go along with WHAD. He might think he has a great hand with these two and a penalty kick in the Mares Novice. When you add the fact Unibet are standout top price on AS for the Triumph, its certainly a worry.

I won't be having any more on her until NRNB.
Report Mystic Wind January 8, 2018 7:37 PM GMT
Personally, I think AS is over-rated and way too short and that WHAD ought to be favourite after Saturday's performance - although I also think SR has a realistic chance of turning it around at Cheltenham. I guess that's what this game is all about - opinions.

Jacob's post-race comments were interesting and alluded to the high regard they have for WHAD "we wanted to teach him something today, winning at the same time" - treating a Grade 1 as an educational race!
Report Can't Catch Me January 8, 2018 8:35 PM GMT
If WHAD really is top class, and I'm not saying he isn't, I think you'd have to be keeping a very close eye out for Sao who Jared Sullivan has sent to PN and Demopolis who JP has sent to Hobbs. Slight concern neither have been out yet, but both beat WHAD out of sight in France.
Report ReaseHeath January 8, 2018 8:41 PM GMT
A horse with Sussex Ranger's breeding should surely appreciate better ground than Saturday - I know it does n't always work like that but...
Report shockster January 8, 2018 8:45 PM GMT
Haha CCM, I was just going through WHAD form and was about to post the same. Unbelievable. Didn't realise Demopolis was with Hobbs though. That horse Good Happy looks useful for Soude/Munit also but still in France.
Report ReaseHeath January 8, 2018 8:58 PM GMT
I'd not be overly concerned about their absence CCM - Hobbs stable just emerging from a spell in the doldrums and Nicholls has form for introducing his best juvenile late in the day.
Report Can't Catch Me January 8, 2018 9:29 PM GMT
True enough RH.
Report Can't Catch Me January 8, 2018 9:29 PM GMT
Great minds shockster :)
Report Can't Catch Me January 8, 2018 9:37 PM GMT
On a line through Sao, I actually can't believe Style de Garde is such a big price myself. Got some 40/1 before his debut and I thought he was really impressive, but for some reason 33/1 is still widely available. He's out later this week so will hopefully shorten considerably.

But he looked like he was going to finish close enough to Sao when that one fell, when they both made their debut, then hosed up next time from a horse who had run very respectably first time up.

I'm on AS too, but StG is my biggest winner.
Report Mystic Wind January 9, 2018 6:56 AM GMT
I appreciate that WHAD's French form doesn't look as good as others now stabled more locally, but there is the distinct possibility that NJH has found considerable improvement. Anyway, money-where-my-mouth-is time, I've had a saver on WHAD.

2pts win Sussex Ranger @ 33/1
1pt win We Have A Dream @ 8/1
Report BigField January 10, 2018 3:07 PM GMT
Happy with that perofmrance from WHAD, will definitely be better on the Cheltenham ground (assuming it isn't a bog), feeling quietly confident, though will probably have some saver(s) like a Samcro/Apples Shakira double or something like that
Report Can't Catch Me January 11, 2018 10:40 PM GMT
Style de Garde odds on against Gumball tomorrow. Fingers crossed for a big performance.
Report Mystic Wind January 12, 2018 3:40 PM GMT
Funny old race at Huntingdon today. The winner has obviously come on since being thrashed by Sussex Ranger at Sandown. Did anyone catch what Gary Moore said about Sussex Ranger on Attheraces before the off? I got distracted and missed it!
Report Mystic Wind January 13, 2018 1:28 PM GMT
Redicean won easily again today, but once again it was a slow-run affair and his hurdling technique doesn't look that great to me. King has suggested he may run on Trials Day - where he's likely to meet Apple's Shakira, that should tell us a lot more about him.
Report BigField January 14, 2018 12:35 AM GMT
Yeah Redicean was very impressive today, still feel the only danger to WHAD is the fav

I'm hearing good reports also. I bet Farclas as I think it'll get alot closer to Espoir if not beat it nto.
Report ReaseHeath January 17, 2018 12:04 AM GMT
The horse Gary Moore was talking about must be Et Moi Alors now entered in the first at Ascot on Saturday. I think what he said was tongue in cheek and he was winding Nick Luck up a bit but he said Sussex Ranger was the best one he'd run so far and he only had one more left to run but could n't remember it's name because it was French!

The Ascot race is probably worth keeping an eye on - previous winners include Binocular, Zaynar, Grandouet, Balder Succes and Top Notch (although Henderson does n't have an entry this year).

Nayati is entered up for Alan King (Moore should have a line on that one through Kapdad) and Oistrakh Le Noir could be interesting for Ben Pauling, Munir and Souede.
Report DontBeSakhee January 20, 2018 12:59 PM GMT
I backed Et Moi today and for the Triumph. I can get my money back with B365. What's people's thought on that? Probably would've won had it stood up, but was that Triumph form?
Report Callisto-moon January 20, 2018 1:25 PM GMT
moores ones a superstar.
Report BigField January 20, 2018 2:06 PM GMT
Yeah most likely would have won, not sure it would have beaten much - though the ground was testing so could well improve for better ground and experience.
Report DontBeSakhee January 20, 2018 3:39 PM GMT
Had a few winners today which has covered my outlay including the bet on Et Moi so no need to cash it out. Will keep it in case, it'll have to run again if they are planning on going to the Supreme, so will know my fate then.
Report buddeliea January 21, 2018 7:49 AM GMT
Just had another look at Redicean's latest race at Kempton.
Not the most fluent jumping at a couple, but dont think that will stop him running a big race in the Triumph.
Taken 10 nrnb, think thats fair odds, maybe slightly generous?.
Report Quevega06 January 21, 2018 8:59 AM GMT
Yeah I think you are right budd, looked to have some engine. Apple's Shakara aside he's the best of the English.
Report Deptford January 21, 2018 9:45 AM GMT
Agree^ he really impressed me, took the 10/1 nrnb
Report ReaseHeath January 21, 2018 12:30 PM GMT
I thought the race was difficult to get a handle on given the conditions and the unusual conclusion but what I would say is that Et Moi Alors looked a very impressive beast physically - also got to bear in mind that was his racecourse debut, no flat runs or hurdling experience in France...
Report DontBeSakhee January 21, 2018 4:54 PM GMT
So Rease, assuming all is well after the fall, where next? The Adonis? Win  that and he's in the mix!
Report ReaseHeath January 22, 2018 7:29 PM GMT
Not sure DBS - noticed watching replay today that he was down quite a long time after the fall (possibly winded) - Adonis is 5 weeks away I think?

Maybe they'll try to find a softer looking race to give him anice experience in if all is well...
Report DontBeSakhee January 22, 2018 11:03 PM GMT
True. I only had a speculative bet on him, but was reasonably impressed, shame the way the race ended as it would have been nice to see whether he would have extended away or whether he's a bridle horse and would have ground it out.

The Moore's are usually not bothered about missing Cheltenham I think, so they could put him away for next year possibly.

Although, I would add that although the Adonis is usually a hot race, it's also often a small field so it may be difficult, but wouldn't have the hustle and bustle of a weaker race with more runners?

Who knows, we'll have to wait and see.

Espoir allen runs badly at Lepardstown

Report Giddy February 4, 2018 5:35 PM GMT
Alan King has a Highclere horse called Ballywood. Its won 2 out of 5 races in France. It will be out within the next 10 days and if all goes well, will go for The Triumph or The Fred Winter
He described it as a very exciting prospect
Report impossible123 February 4, 2018 10:24 PM GMT
Espoir D'Allen was too keen early on and did not show the form and beating he gave to Farclas (receiving 3lbs last time) but level weight today.
Report Quevega06 February 4, 2018 11:15 PM GMT
Espoir was really disappointing today. Once he was beat Barry went easy
Report buddeliea February 5, 2018 7:58 AM GMT
Put a line through ED imo, a juvenile horse cannot do that and then have enough at the end.
Report BigField February 5, 2018 4:39 PM GMT
We Have A Dream certainly still in with a shout for me - going to hedge my bet on him with a Apples Shakira/Samcro/Bouveur Deir treble but will wait til closer to the time as their odds won't change much before then
Report impossible123 February 5, 2018 5:43 PM GMT
Espoir D'Allen, in the same ownership as the fav Apples Shakira, has taken a walk in the market - participation in doubt?
Report BigField February 5, 2018 6:04 PM GMT
ability in doubt!
Report impossible123 February 5, 2018 6:18 PM GMT
Maybe not, he did beat the 2nd Farclas easily after settling early in the race unlike his latest run; 22 here is tempting but no insurance is a bit risky.
Report BigField February 5, 2018 6:30 PM GMT
fair enough, i'm afraid I can't help you with regards to his liklehood of running, I still can't see past the top 2 in the betting though.
Report impossible123 February 5, 2018 6:55 PM GMT
I think the price and position of Apples Shakira in the betting market are mainly Hendo induced and the 7lbs allowance she receives from the others; her form is not earth shattering but she's the highest rated with Espoir D'Allen next best. I think We Have A Dream has better credential but Hendo trained too.
Report BigField February 5, 2018 8:09 PM GMT
I remember a few years ago I backed Hargam when Peace and Co won (have only been watching racing 5 or so years) - that race just sticks in my mind and if memory serves me right Hendo was keener on Peace and Co than Hargam (and I think Peace and Co was stronger in the market than Hargam throughout the year too) - that's the only reason I'm worried by Apples Shakira!

Report impossible123 February 5, 2018 8:20 PM GMT
Oh yes, it was 2015. Hendo had the 2nd Top Notch as well; Peace And Co, Top Notch and Hargam, a full house - I was on the 2nd. I think the ground just before racing did not go for Hargam.
