Making his Showtime debut tonight , highly touted prospect Devin Haney 18-0-0 takes a step up against experienced Mason Menard - 32-2-0. Haney is only 19 and still has a lot to learn, but he has all the tools to become a proper World Champion in the not too distant future. Haney has fast hands, good timing, a great jab and power in both hands. He has been a pro since the age of 16 (Having to go to Mexico to start his career as he was too young to fight pro in the USA) and has sparred with some of the best at the weight including Porter, Davis and Stevenson. Acquitting himself very well against older and more experienced fighters. Menard is a tough but relatively limited opponent. He is very strong and has power with a respectable KO record, and he should be a great test for Haney. Menard has only been beaten once in the last 9 years or so, when he was knocked out by the powerful Raymundo Beltran. Haney is faster and more skillful than his opponent and should be ready to put on a show against Menard, and I think he will stop the shorter man after a decent battle for the vacant NABA Lightweight Title. An impressive win for Haney will put him in the reckoning for an eliminator for Robert Easter Jnr's IBF Tite. Should be well worth seeing this, if you can get a stream. Will Haney live up to the hype? I think he might.
A very slick performance from Haney working off his excellent jab and throwing some good right crosses and overhand rights. Won every round easily, keeping his outmatched opponent at arms length. Haney is still young and he could well outgrow the welterweight Division. In any case he is a serious talent and looks set to be a big star in the future.
* USBA Title, not naba as stated above.
